I'm sure they're still pretty happy, they'll inherit 2 Billion instead of 4 billion.

His kids shouldnt be mad at all, they are going to get billions regardless... I would be happy with just $100K... :)

Well, I was being facetious when I said they might be pissed. However, I will bet there's a tiny part of them that secretly curses him for giving part of "their" inheritance away. "3/4 of a billion each, Dad?? What the hell are we going to do with that??" ;)

Did you know that "facetious" is the only word in the English language that has all the vowels in it in order.

Half of all of OUR money we have ever spent on Star Wars has been given to charity...

Good point... turns out I'm one charitable mofo :lol

And cool of Lucas to do it, sure having 2Bil instead of 4 doesn't really make much of a difference, but that money will certainly help a lot of people.

I know with T. Boone Pickens (one of the others listed) a lot of the money he's donated has been to the University I work for and usually he sets them up as match money a donation of 100 million a few years ago was matched by private donations and the state and ended up being 300 million :google

well all of these billionaires said they will donate half there fortunes to charity. well they better watch how and were the money is being spent, because if they dont, the goverment is just going to piss away the money they donated.

If problems are solved by innovation, services, and infrastructure development, and if those things exist because of a monetary incentive or monetary payments, then money solves problems.

Businesses succeed because they pay their employees money. Hospitals are built because they are paid for with money. Class conflict goes out the window with more money to more people. Wars are less likely when people have money to buy the things they want, and are less likely to get frustrated or marginalized.

Things succeed because of good ideas and management, you can give someone all the money in the world, but if they don't know what to do with it then it doesn't help.

That's why the economy sucks, people keep thinking, take money from the rich people, but they don't realize the rich people are the ones who create jobs.

Unless you can give people a significant amount of money, then it's all a waste.

Without money, there is no incentive to produce good ideas or to manage. Or to run a big corporation. Saying that money is the basis of effective problem solving (which it is) is not the same as saying that tax money from the rich should be used to do certain things.

The fundamental problem is that people do things for money mostly out of narrow self-interest. That's good for some things, but not others (like eliminating poverty or providing malaria medication in Africa, or even in making sure that poor kids in the U.S. can go to school or get medical treatment when they are sick). In these cases, it takes government, or charity and philanthropy, to do good things. So I applaud Lucas, Bill Gates, and others who are giving a little something back to the world that made them what they are.

Excellent put Karamazov... If all the rich people on this world would give a little we would be able to help alot of poor kids in the U.S. Put lets face the trues, alot fo rich people are very selfish which it drive me nuts.. If I was a self made billionare, like Gates, Lucas, I would help out those who needed and take care of our elders, and poor kids at the children hospital..

Again, really how far can you go? Even with billions of dollars, you could give each person in need only a little bit of money, and it would be spent quickly and be forgotten.

There is always going to be someone out there, that will be unhappy with your contribution regarless. To me helping out others would give me self satisfaction even if I am making a small difference.

Have you ever been to the children hostipal? it is very heartbreaking to see a yound child in such horrible paint with a parent that can barely pay for the medical needs. If you help that child out I strongly think the kids parent will be very thankfull and will remember it for the rest of their life.. that right there is true satisfaction to me...
