Does Dave ever say anything bad (i.e. truthful) about Sideshow figures?

Actually I have seen him post dissatisfaction with material or sculptwork from time to time. But obviously he posts very little 'judgment' about figures in general, mostly just factual info.

He did get excited about having HT Han and Chewbacca though.

It's that material that's putting me off getting them.

makes you wonder where the hell these price jumps are justified to the buyer. when a company cant source out the correct material that a $15 hasbro managed to do. they cant get the better bodies they desperatley need, and they cant upgrade the paint or even the sculpts sometimes . for shame father, for shame

Oh, and not to sound like a Sideshow hater (which I'm not).... but please please please let it be HT that makes the Snowspeeder Luke.

This is my feeling. Problem: SSC just made this pilot, so not sure if HT will shy away from making one, albeit a different one. And since SSC has most of the components for one between their Hoth offerings and this disappointment...I worry.

My god. I think we can understand now why Sideshow wanted to use the separate eye system, because these have to be some of the worst-painted eyes I've ever seen on a 1/6 figure. I mean you can find knockoff and recast heads on ebay with more realistic eyes than that. :slap

SS did it on purpose, just so they could say, "We told you we couldn't paint eyes." :lol

To be fair we don't know the facts of this figure yet. With Sideshow it's often a case of biting the bullet because they look better in hand.

I couldn't tell the facts of HT Obi-Wan either from photos. It was only holding the figure and looking at it from different angles that Alec finally appeared!

No doubt this looks like Luke in ANH pilot gear. No doubt its better than previous SS figures.

But its the margin of difference that's the problem (especially given the promise of the proto from nearly 2 years ago), and then the even larger margin still between this figure and HT figures -- made worse by the fact that this figure costs the same (theoretically more because its so light on extras). As many have said, if this figure was $189-$199 I think there would be much less complaining.

Complaining in this case, for those who don't understand it, is the expression of dissatisfaction with what was promised or expected versus what is ultimately the reality.

It is funny how in a Hot Toys thread, lots of people will be like "this always happens, first pics are always unflattering! I'm sure it's not that bad, wait for more in hand pics!!" whereas Sideshow, all it takes is one person's photos and it's an instant **** fest.

Difference is, Hot Toys has proved themselves more times and now they offer figures with more stuff, for less. Sideshow is just adding insult to injury with a higher price tag, no extras and a final product that is a far cry from what the brilliance they showed initially. If this was just a little less than $200, it wouldn't be so jarring. Other than the eyes, this looks to be about a 2010, 2011 Hot Toys figure.

SS definitely should be more honest with their prototypes. This one was expensive even if it matched the proto.

As davejames wrote:

And better overall painting, too.

Maybe it's that old chestnut about non-Chinese companies getting the rough end of the pineapple from Chinese factories. :lol

As pointed out below, I'm sure a master futzer could make this figure fit in with the below....

Not a little too short for a stormtrooper... he just grew a bit in three years.

Yeah I was trying not to go there, but clearly it would be pretty easy for Sideshow to just make the Snowspeeder Luke themselves. All they'd really need is a different jacket, and the gloves and gun belt from their Hoth Luke.

Sigh.

All the best knock-off stuff on eBay is made at the same factories by the same workers that make the commercial sculpts for a lot of companies. That's not speculation BTW,

The photos aren't the best but I think enough can be seen in these to know it's not going to look a lot better.

I'm not speculating whether you or anyone else will like it, nor even if I'm going to like it, but it's definitely going to look better in hand and in many future photos. These photos are garbage.

I just realized that the eye shape seems to be modelled from this shot, rather than the more characteristic wide-eyed Hamill that comes to mind. But they still look too narrow, which is massively ironic for SS.

When I saw this photo taken at the Magic of Myth exhibition I thought SS had even got the belt colour wrong:

But it does match this one:

One more from the Magic of Myth:

Dude you can't use pics of Guyliner Luke from the Holiday Special as an accurate source of reference. The people involved in that hideous TV production were just borrowing props from LFL and for the most part just throwing things together without being particularly movie accurate.

The short of the matter is this: sideshow charges more than hot toys for a less than hot toys quality product. Until they can prove that they can deliver a quality product worth what they are charging consistently, I am out. This is why am not buying the Temple of doom Indiana Jones.

Point being that the grey belt seems to be the accurate one, whereas the one used in that exhibition costume looks wrong.

Hence, one less thing that SS got wrong!

I wouldn't say they're garbage. You can clearly see the figure in focus and its lit decently. It's not like they're taken at some weird angle out of focus and shrouded in shadows. It can probably be made to look better with some trick photography but I think the sculpt is at best subpar, definitely not worth the $240 Sideshow is asking for it.

Every photo is out of focus - at least if you look at the full size versions on FB. Shot through glass, flat lighting. I wouldn't post them if I'd shot them.

EDIT: Ok, there are one or two photos that aren't in perfect focus, but are good enough that I won't say they're as OOF as the others.

Again, not saying this figure is a home run by any stretch, but that the photos make it look worse than it is, possibly much worse. I also don't find $240 for a figure in a suit a good value, but that's not relevant and Sideshow is free to ask whatever they want for their products just like consumers decide whether they want to buy.
