Re: The Man of Steel

currious to see what Nolan does with it. Worried we're getting a "grimdark and gritty" superman. I'm ok with a "grimdark" world, but superman himself needs to reamin a shining beacon in the darkness..

Yea I'm also curious to see what Nolan does with a Superman movie someday if he ever makes one which he hasn't.

Re: The Man of Steel

What was he called in his first run of Comics then?

Superman.

His origin has been updated and re-tweaked slightly throughout the history of the comics. The modern interpretation set out in John Byrne's 1986 limited series "Man of Steel" and Mark Waid's 2003 series "Superman: Birthright", is that the S-shield is actually a crest worn by many Kryptonians.

When Jor-El puts Kal-El in a ship to be sent to Earth, he clothes him in robes and blankets bearing the Kryptonian S-shield. In adulthood, Kal-El/Clark decides to base his costume on the garments he was sent to Earth in, and includes the S-shield on his chest.

It is the Daily Planet that names him "Superman" in their report of his first appearance, because of how much his shield looks like an "S".

They have touched on it in the trailer;

Lois: "What's the 'S' stand for?"
Superman: "It's not an 'S', on my world it means 'hope'..."
Lois: "Well, here, it's an 'S'. How about... 'Superman'?"

IT's my understanding he helped pen the script with David Goyer? Goyer being the same person whom helped pen the Nolanverse Batman Trilogy?

Yes, i know Zach Snyder is the director.
Yes, i know a Director has a great deal of control of a project.

But If you think this thing is not going to have Nolan and Goyer's fingerprints on it, you're quite mistaken.

But beyond that, Snyder did suckerpunch, 300, and watchmen. Very good films in their own right, however, these three movies are the epitome of "grim and gritty"

REgardless, I'm interested to see the final result.

You're understanding is incorrect, perhaps Carl will enlighten you and heal your Nolan afflictions.

It's Zack's movie. No doubt about that at all.

If there's a Nolan who deserves more than the usual Producer's credit, it's actually his brother: Jonathan. He helped save the mess of a script (by David Goyer) with Zack and his team at literally the 11th hour. Unfortunately, those guys won't get their due on script credit thanks to the WGA.

But I'll tell ya, when I read Goyer's script just before production I was pretty damn concerned. :lol And that was the draft Chris Nolan blessed and had story input on. Thankfully, his brother and others knew it could be vastly improved... and WB backed them. But Goyer will get the credit, which is a sham... but that's how the system works.

I've been involved with the production since 2 weeks before shooting began. Trust me, Christopher Nolan's input and influence since that time has been quite minimal. And I'll reiterate: the draft of the Goyer script he signed off on was pretty damn lame. Design choices and all tech decisions were all Zack and his team, as was the much doctored shooting script (with Jonathan ghost-writing a lot of it).

You'll never hear anyone at WB or elsewhere say that officially of course. And, for obvious reasons: they're using Chris Nolan's name to help sell people on the flick. And that makes perfect sense. Plus, him signing on as Producer is what got it greenlit in the first place. No one can deny that.

He's neither George Lucas on the INDY films (who shepherded the stories and was always on set) or Burton with the 3rd and 4th Batman films (who did absolutely nothing). Rather somewhere in between. He was barely on the set, if at all.

Re: The Man of Steel

Ok, that's some information I was missing. And that's fairly positive. More than Fairly TBQH.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Nolan's batman, even if I've got a few issues with it... but I'd think he'd be the wrong person to do superman, hence my hesatation regarding his involvement. just a genre mismatch imo.... Like George Romaro trying to do charlie and the chocolate factory.

but from what you're telling me there, that's beside the point. Interesting.

Also, had no idea Irish worked in Cinema.

well, with any luck, this will work to kick-start the "just-us" leage, and we can get some more interesting villians ( sorry, regardless of the take, Zod's been done to death for me) later on down the line.

Braniac anyone?
OR Darksied?
Hank Henshaw?

Braniac needs to be saved for man of steel sequels. Maybe they can use him like Loki and he can first be the main villain for man of steel 2 then come back as a threat in the Justice league movie as a minion of darkseid along with granny and the furies. Braniac is one of the better villains in supermans rogue gallery. If you don't have him in a sequel for man of steel who would they use?? Mongol or lex again?? We know Lex will be in this in some capacity I just don't want him to be the main villain. I would prefer if he was aiding the main villain but I don't want to see him as the main threat since he doesn't pose any physical threat to supes. He can be the mastermind, like Talia but not the enforcer or physical threat like bane (no power suit lex)

Re: The Man of Steel

Thing is Lex probably can't carry a Superman movie anymore, he couldn't in Returns even with the amazing Spacey performance, and now in Zack Snyder's Superman we're gonna need someone that can put up a serious fight. You can't go from Zod wiping out 10 square city blocks to Luthor wants to steal your land.

He will have to be relegated to helping someone like Brainiac get to earth without realising the consequences.

Re: The Man of Steel

But you CAN have Lex selling anti-superman weapons to the army....
and to gangs.

you can have lex doing a GREAT DEAL behind the scenes.
I'm even ok with going with Metallo... and having metallo lead into an eventual super-suit lex as the END of a Lex arc.

Spacy was an Amazing, if poorly written Lex.

But Best Lex is best.

Well written, Well acted. Properly portrayed as "the man behind the curtain", and He even moonlights as the flash.
Give me THAT sort of Lex, and I will be very very happy.

This would actually be a great "overall" story for MoS 2 imo. I would love to see Brainiac on screen and regardless of how often we've seen him, most movie goers are going to expect to see Luthor in some aspect in the series.

I agree that there is hope for Lex as a villain. Byrne reinvented Lex as a business mogul. It made Lex one of the most powerful men in the world in terms of money, influence, and profile VS the most powerful man physically. I think Lex eventually became president as well in the comics. Their struggle can also become a battle of wits and even psychological warfare. Lex has always known Supe's biggest weakness (as he sees it) is his compassion.

And I also felt the Smallville Lex was fantastic, at least in the beginning.

Re: The Man of Steel

I wonder if Cavill will succeed at making folks think about him first when Superman is brought up, or will it always be CR.

Not an easy thing to accomplish.

Especially since CR played Clark just as good as he did Superman.

New Superman looks great. But.... I think CR will always be the ultimate one, its like he was born just to play that role. Absolutely the best casting I have ever seen. Not to mention, truth.... Reeves was one of the most beautiful male humans to ever walk the planet. That guy was drop-dead gorgeous.

I am willing to give New Supes a chance though. He also looks good; he's just not the incarnation of the god Apollo like Reeves was.

I just want to see epic Supes/Zod throwdowns; I'm pretty easy to please.

We BETTER hear "kneel before Zod" in this film, though. It better happen. Not hearing that would be like Schwarzeneggar Terminator showing up in a Terminator film and NOT saying "I'll be back." It should be a contractual requirement.

Re: The Man of Steel

Exactly, and Nolan(chris) deserves no credit for this movie the way I see it.

But you can already tell if it's a success all the TDKR fanboys will flood in here to credit him.
