Re: The Man of Steel

just got out of an early screening of this movie. Overall, the CGI effects were great. Story was aweful. Lois Lane was a weak character. Too "Sci-fi" for me. Character development sux. I didn't feel connected with the characters. 3/5 for me.

Superman? A Science Fiction movie? BLASPHEMY! Superman doesn't come from space! How could the filmakers be so stupid to include such a terribly inaccurate, and important part of the mythos!

Well there's sci-fi then there's SCI-FI, this falls into the latter. Which some people won't like. Personally, I think it gave the movie an originality, forget all the hyperbole about MOS steel's emotional and social reinvention, the real element that sets this apart from any previous movies is it's embrace of it's sci-fi elements. If you like the second half of The Avengers, but done to a much more sophisticated level, then you will like this. I did.

But it is fun, beautifully made pulp. That's good enough for me!

Sounds good. The sci-fi side of Supes has long been neglected, well apart from the comics of course.

Re: The Man of Steel

Superman is an Alien. So. I don't see that as a problem...at all.

There isn't a problem IMO. But I think a large part of the movie going audience doesn't associate Superman with pure sci-fi. Supes has cinematically always been very human/earthy. He has for the most part been the only fantastical element in a scene, which makes him more extraordinary in a way. This movie is part alien invasion movie...with a Superhero in it. Thats a big jump in genre and tone for the average viewer. I have no issues with it at all, except I thought there was a little too much CG. It's wonderful CG for the most part, but after the WOW factor has worn off. It does lack some depth and heart.

It's a great fantasy movie. The strengths far out way any issues I could have with it. I was surprised to see so many influences in tone and even dialogue references from the Donner movies. But it's visual presentation is a different beast entirely. It cost a lot to make, but you can see that on screen, unlike Superman Returns, which had the heart, but the FX were awful on for the most part. This is kinetic, colorful and fun (but in a deadly serious dry way!). Like a ride at a theme park.
Will we be talking about it in 30 years time like Donner's movie? no, we won't. It's not classic in any way. But who cares, it's awesome entertainment, and the score is an incredible achievement considering what came before it.

Despite what IrishJedi said last week, I actually think this could and should pick up some Oscars. But technical ones. Certainly the FX, the sound editing and hopefully the score. Those elements really are outstanding.

LOL @ complaints about science fiction in a SCIENCE FICTION story setting. Not being mean when I say that, but seriously: lol. Its like going to icanhaz.cheezburger.com and going "Too many cats for me!"

Rory: But a large part of the movie going audience doesn't associate Superman with pure sci-fi.

They will get used to the idea fast, I think.

Re: The Man of Steel

So the soundtrack has a few interesting little things to it. First....the trailer music.

Trailer 3

Trailer 4.

Love this song.

And then there's this....there's no way this was an accident. Read the song names in order. And you will see.

:lol

Snyder/Zimmer...you sneaky bastards.

Re: The Man of Steel

I knew it wouldn't get perfect scores.
And no better than stuff like RISES, or AVENGERS really.
So maybe the super nerds will stop thinking this is the movie that deserves 10 Oscar nods and a best picture win LOL

Even IGN pointed out it's flaws, which surprised me.
And I too, was worried about the "too serious" aspect and turns out it does try to be too serious. No balance of action and humor.

The CGI being a bit too much and noticeable from jumping to CGI to real actor concerns me too.

I'll enjoy it for what it is, because I do like super hero movies, action , cgi and I do like Zack. I'm just glad I didn't have this movie built up and my expectations through the roof. I kept it low key and considered this just one more good movie on my summer movie list to watch.

Re: The Man of Steel

Pretty accurate review IMO. I agreed with almost everything he said.
Pity the guy is so bloody annoying! :lol

I agree with Jahns too.
He is annoying, but he knows his stuff. He's a gamer and movie geek like the rest of us.
I'm sure he was super pumped for this movie, but then the issues and irks take it down a notch.

It sounds like he really wanted to say Avengers is still the better comic super hero movie. :rotfl

Right now it sounds like Star Trek still might be the best movie of the summer so far.

I'll find out on Friday when I see it. But the consensus so far, seems accurate.

After IM3, I am ready for a sit-down serious film; if I want to see humor in a superhero movie, I can find that all over the place.

EDIT: trailer 4 music, epic.

Re: The Man of Steel

So, it's actually playing in IMAX as well as IMAX 3D. What is the 3D like? I'm really pushing towards just IMAX for this one.

I read some of this. https://www.unomaha.edu/jrf/superman.htm

If anyone is interested in the amount of religious/Jesus references in Superman this is a good read. Even I didn't see that many and I'm a Christian. Not trying to bully offend or push my views on anyone here but I just thought it was interesting and wanted to share.
