This new Marvel Spidey can't even beat crap Spiderman 3 from a decade ago...? Are you kidding me? I thought people liked this one? It must suck in truth.

Crappy Part 3's often outgross superior entries in a series. X-Men 3 outgrossed DOFP and Logan. POTC: AWE over COTBP and Dead Men Tell No Tales, Spidey 3 over Homecoming, TDKR over BB, etc.

I enjoyed Homecoming in the theater but it's yet another 2017 film that I don't see myself owning at home.

With trilogies I get why people would wait to see the finale, thus it grosses more (like Jedi over Empire). But just a 3rd outing? Just a further adventure? And it beats a modern, all-Marvel, all-new and shiny version with iron Man wrapped up inside to boot? That's crazy.

Well most franchises suffer diminishing returns after the third one unless it's a Fast and Furious film. :)

I even predict that TLJ will be the last SW film to surpass a billion worldwide.

But we're talking about an all-new version of Marvel's SpiderMan unable to beat the 3rd adventure of old Spiderman. That's what's amazing to me.

But I will make note of your prediction. A failed third film/finale of a trilogy making less than the #2. That only happened to Matrix, didn't it?

BOTFA made less than AUJ and DOS.

I think that the return of Abrams minus Han AND Leia (and possibly Luke for all we know) coupled with RO and HS padding out the Disney entries will equate to $750-$850 million worldwide starting with HS. We'll see but I think that once people have gotten their "RO Vader" moment for old Luke many will be ready to move on from SW.

That's not surprising with the Hobbit. I forgot that one or I would have thrown it under the bus instead of Matrix.

It happened to Rambo III and BTTF 3 also.

Is that true? On their opening run? I thought Rambo did better. Again, forgot BBTF 3... but I remember the western theme didn't do it any favors. I also remember being curious if a franchise could sustain with only a year between releases.

Yeah, First Blood was a surprise hit and Stallone's first huge hit outside of Rocky, and then in 1985, Rambo II was a huge blockbuster, and the second most profitable film of 1985 behind BTTF.

Then, a few years later, both BTTF 3 and Rambo 3 made significantly less than the sequels.

I'm not a fan of either of those films. The western theme was weird, and Rambo in a desert felt out of place. I like his intro...that's it.

I didn't realize Rambo 3 was such a stinker. But I never understood that franchise's success beyond the first one. Rambo 2 was almost as silly as Commando. Macho glorification at its most infantile.

Mad Max and Indy are better at it for me.

Rambo III is probably the best looking film of the franchise, with the biggest action sequences, and Stallone at his absolute physical peak, but it was a rehash of Part II. It's not that bad, but I don't like it. It's interesting to watch it now....and to see Rambo helping Bin Laden :horror

Part II's success was an anomaly, because it was a B movie, like many of the Chuck Norris and Arnold films, but it made as much money as a blockbuster. To put it in perspective, Commando made $57 mill and Rambo: Part 2 made over $300 mill that same year. Maybe it was because of First Blood's quality, or Stallone's popularity, but it clicked with audiences around the world for some reason. I know it was one of my favorite films growing up, along with the toy line.

There was a wave of super-macho movies that came in ushered by Rambo 2. Top Gun, Arnold, Stallone, Segal, Van Damme, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard on and on... fed by high testosterone young males repeat viewings. Some were great (Die Hard), most were crap for young teens. It's that time that the word 'macho' really took on its negative association. But we didn't have too many SJWs so much in the 80's... thank god.

It was the heavy metal of the movie genre, then grunge killed it in the mid 90's :lol

I like that "macho action" is kind of making a comeback with movies like John Wick, Taken, and the Equalizer.

There's a lot of truth to that statement. :lol

I'm not sure it ever went away entirely. It's like a subgenre of action that is here to stay. It's been here longer than just Rambo obviously. Goes back to Dirty Harry... Steve McQueen... as far back as even Bogart. But it does ebb and flow with the times and oversaturation like everything else.

With the superhero exhaustion, I kind of think its going the other direction now. Like Stranger Things and It. I think the "everyman" is due for a comeback in some form.

Spiderman 3 had immense hype and was coming off the heels of 2. Even tho it was the worst of the series it was the most hyped movie of 2007 easily. This movie is like the third reboot I'm surprised it's come this far

It probably has something to due with it being the first Spider-Man movie in the MCU and, unlike the last reboot, watchable. :lol

But 2 was so bad. I just don't understand Spiderman I guess, or rather what Spiderman fans want. If Spiderman 2 is the best of what Spiderman can be, I just as soon never see another Spiderman movie. Ever.

I didn't think 2 was bad, but I still prefer the first one.

Spider-Man 2 has the advantage of not being another origin story, which is something I appreciated with Homecoming. You don't have to wait an hour to see Spider-Man in action, which is why I think a lot of people parade it as being the best.

Although it routinely gets panned, I still like the fight scenes in 3 a lot.
