I guess I'm in the minority in thinking homecoming was a bit of a turd, ranking 'up' there with the Garfield disasters for a few reasons.
Spiderman was always my favourite hero he always had a air of realism and the source material was fantastic making spiderman who he is.
Things like Flash Thompson, the school jock/ bully who physically bullied peter as well as verbally this instilled a deep seated dislike of bullies and one reason why he will always stand up for the little guy, Flash as a fat little kid whos on the school quiz team, just doesn't work.
Then there's the whole aunt may/uncle Ben story arc, that's what drives him he could have saved Ben had he acted but he didn't thus not only causing his death but also depriving his aunt of her life long partner, the guilt of that, the remorse give him purpose.
In homecoming aunt may come across more as a 'oh well lets not cry over spilt milk: internet dating, singles bar good time girl' while Spiderman is just an Avengers wannabe.
Then theres the fat kid sidekick who he didn't see in that tiny room, the stupid 'super suit' that just seems to negate the whole point of spiderman, the super smart science parker who takes apart a alien gizmo with a hammer! Please, I realise Marvel were going for a reboot but did they really have to change quite so much?
I think they strayed way to far from what makes Spiderman, Spiderman and on the whole I found it most disappointing and personally even the Thor trailers are better than Homecoming.
Read similar comments on other boards but - that's the thing - it's folks who REALLY know the comics who seem to be the most upset. 'Coz the source material really means something. But that's the thing - speakin' as a non Spidey fan (who feels OK about the character, just not a fav) it gets too much. E.g. ordinary folks like me were already Spidey-saturated, srsly. Because those movies would come out and like Batman and SW every store has its Spidey bed sheets and mugs and cereal and whatever in your face, on top of the movie ads.
From a movie-watcher perspective - Spidey gets bullied? Don't care, he was sort of a geek in those other Spidey movies, and anyway I already bled for poor Cap getting picked on in the First Avenger (Cap's got that covered, re not liking bullies for a good reason). Uncle Ben? Oh no, not again, didn't we just do this and in Batman too? Spidey's a brilliant teenager? Whoops, caught that in Iron Man.
E.g., re the films if you are NOT a big Spidey fan and the source material doesn't have personal meaning I was 1)PO'd they were even doing a solo Spidey movie when IMO Black Widow/WS/Hawkeye etc. whoever deserve it more and IMO would be a lot more interesting; and 2) Kind of dreaded watching it - which I was gonna 'coz it's the MCU - but I couldn't get all those other Spideys out of my head and I REALLY didn't want to sit through "this stuff" again. Not a shrieking, complaining, Mary Jane (who seems more like a pain in the *ss to me in the Tobey movies) and the crying and I dunno - can't even remember the other Spidey films.
Can understand why folks who really know and love the source material would be unhappy (tho I'm OK with the changes to Cap's arc, depending) but IMO Feige & co. had to do SOMETHING to make this work, or it would be an *unacceptable* MCU bomb. For me, I was surprised at how "fresh" Homecoming felt. IMO surprising depth and the relationship with Mae and Tony Stark nicely handled. Honestly I also felt RELIEVED. And Tom Holland was IMO really good.
So hope if nothing else even if comic Spidey fans aren't happy at least an IMO risky move on Marvel's part paid off. It leaves the door open for more Spidey vs. thinking of the character as box office poison.
