How is it BP pulled it off but TLJ did not? In perception I'm talking.

That's the key. Online discussion/opinion of TLJ was very negative so despite the fact that it performed appropriately and to great success, it was compared to the unexpectedly high BO of TFA as a means to an end. And like most online trench warfare tactics, its advocates have to ignore the simple facts to #GoTeam.
