They should have just had the beams or whatever go out and not have the mass relays get destroyed--there's really no reason why they would anyways, it serves no purpose.
Well, it was viscerally pretty interesting, and it was stunning and had an impact. Even my 9 year old's jaw hit the floor when he saw that. I think that's what they were going for.

It did serve a purpose. By overloading and completely destroying the mass relay network, it is made clear that inhabitants of the galaxy are now cut-off from long-distance inter-galactic travel. If the relays were still intact after overloading, it could be inferred that the element zero drive core in each could possibly be repaired, since organics have learned to harness eezo for other purposes. Having the relays explode into smithereens suggests the idea of repair improbable, or perhaps even impossible.
Thematically, the end of mass relay travel also means the end of the Reaper cycle. The Reapers had created the mass relays to guide the evolution of organic life. They were symbolic of Reaper control. Instead of organics creating and adapting to technological advancements themselves, they were jumped forward immenssely by using technology that had existed before them. It is reinforced on more than one occassion in ME3 that activation of the Crucible could have some ramifications. Using technology that they didn't understand once again will ensure them a future, but one that is threatened by struggle and compromise.
Well, that's how Bioware would like us to see it. It all collapses once you observe the mass relay destruction against the rest of the ending(s).
Also, the way they actually handled the mass relay kaput sequences was incredibly vague. Bioware, if in the one time that you show us that blowing up a mass relay blowing up (in The Arrival) causes specific ramifications, you better understand that that is how we'll interpret any future events that looks ostensibly similar.

Well they keep on saying that destroying the relay's doesn't mean that intergalactic travel is cutoff--so that can't be the reason. They probably did it because they thought it was cool and didn't think about whether it was necessary or what it meant. As others have said, it makes it hard to believe that something like that wouldn't destroy the system the relay is in, and it even says so in past information we've gotten about the relays

Well, they aren't completely cut off from inter-galactic travel, but it would take a hell of a lot longer. Decades, even centuries between clusters. Furthermore, FTL travel without the relays would take considerable amounts of fuel and resources.
The post-credit scene at the end of the game takes place about 10,000 years after the ME series, and one of the characters expresses the desire to return to the stars and to visit other star systems, suggesting that the descendents of the organics in the ME series have not fully recovered from the mass relay destruction.
I agree with you that they probably didn't put much thought into the fate of the mass relays. The whole ending is lazy and rushed. The announcement of The Extended Cut is pretty much Bioware admitting it.

Anyone else kind of frustrated the new MP characters have to be unlocked? I'm not sure if they're gold/silver unlocks or what. I keep hoping for something good, and it seems all I get is another upgrade for the Hornet.
The post credits scene kind of makes it sound almost like they don't even have space travel, that part is probably the worst of the ending.

Are the new characters even available yet? I've heard only the maps are available to download right now and that there will be special Resurgence packs available to purchase in the multiplayer store to unlock the characters, weapons, etc. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the whole thing though so who knows. I'm going to save my in-game credits and not purchase any spectre packs until I know for sure what is going on.

Well, apparently some of the new unlocks can be obtained through spectre packs but a lot of people have bought multiple packs and gotten nothing new yet. There are still supposed to be resurgence packs available to purchase at some point but who knows when.
I thought you could only unlock the other classes by buying the equipment packs?

I got the striker rifle that way, but so far that is the only new item.
From reading on their forums it sounds like you need to download the DLC then restart your xbox. Once back in the game the Spectre Packs should mention that they now include the DLC upgrades. When you see that message feel free to purchase away.

The Premium Spectre Packs seem to be back in the store after their brief absence, but I don't see any note there about DLC inclusion. If they will have their own packs later, I'd rather wait to buy those, but the whole thing seems like it's going to frustrate a lot of people.
Did any of you guys get prompted for the Patch 2 update? It says it was supposed to be ready April 10th and that we should've been prompted automatically for the update but I haven't been yet. Anyone know if this has been delayed? the maint hing Iwas concerned about that it was supposed to fix was importing your ME2 shepard successfully but I still can't import his face
