I remain shocked this is not a major plank of the Republican platform.
What people fail to realize about alternative energies is that to ween ourselves from foreign oil and develop the new energy sources we would need would require the US to use our own oil. Democrats have consistantly stopped us from drilling new fields

Biden has a long-standing reputation (and decades of experience) as an attack dog. I imagine he'll eat Palin alive in a debate.

On the other hand he could just wind up looking like a bully.

Besides, you do realize that oil companies are already sitting 68 million acres of untapped oil/natural gas leases, yet they aren't using them to lower our precious fuel costs. Why, well why should they? They earn record profits each month - what possible incentive is there for them to lower fuel prices?

This is why talks of domestic drilling are so ludicrous. The oil companies have no reason whatsoever to change course. The option is make them (something McCain certainly won't do) or come up with a viable alternative energy option.

When politics are involved people are passionate about their beliefs. When your beliefs get knocked down by others comments it's hard to bite your tongue and keep it civil. For this reason I tend to avoid political discussion. But here I am discussing politics:lol Being a Republican living in a Blue state can be challenging at times. Whatever your beliefs are I respect them... I don't have to agree you nor you with me. But discussion is always interesting and entertaining to say the least. Again , I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DEBATES!!!!:D
Damn, you live in Ca. that has got to be tough.

No, it really doesn't. You're just assuming a concerted alternative energy effort would involve the government "telling its citizens how to build their homes or what to do with privately owned land." There's no reason to make that assumption.

:horror:lol
Hows that monument to naivety youre building coming long?

This isn't true at all. And if we have an exit strategy, what's the advantage of tapping our own reserves in the interim?

I actually don't hope to accomplish anything. But for the first time in my adult life, I dislike both candidates sufficiently that I don't see any point in giving any support to either.

What would casting a vote accomplish, if I don't believe that either candidate will come even close to representing my views and wishes in Washington?
Well if you live in a state that matters you may help defeat the candidate who would be harmful to this country.

You think alternative energy means the government barging into people's homes and property and you call me naive? Alternative energy will work when it's cheaper and cleaner than the alternative. People will ask for it. The government's role is most likely going to be funding, research and either subsidies or tax breaks for deployment - just like private solar today.

Hey pix, is some guy about to kiss Bea Authur in your avatar? :lol

You dont understand how government land leases work. Youre parroting the liberal environmentalists line on this topic.

Have you ever heard of the US/Mexican wall our Republican President is building? Do some research to find out whose land they're building on:naughty

I have, and while Im not a huge fan of Bush I believe the constitution has a clause that allows the government to claim private land for use in national defense.
The government must also give fair or market value financial compensation to the previous owners.

This isn't true at all. And if we have an exit strategy, what's the advantage of tapping our own reserves in the interim?

Please explain the timetable you perceive as achievable in implementing an alternative energy source (for vehicles) that makes it unnecessary to "tap our own reserves", and where we currently are on that timetable.

Bear in mind that you need to replace at least 50% of the vehicles on the road before you even begin to make a dent in our foreign oil dependence.

What is this exit strategy you are referring to.

I said if. We can't rely on foreign oil in perpetuity but if a real alternative appears on the horizon then why not drain their reserves instead of ours? I'm optimistic to believe this is something we can achieve if the political will is there. Kennedy got us to the moon in nine years. If we can replicate that sort of drive in alternative energy and credible evidence suggests a major switch is possible within (say) 15 years, why not allow foreign oil to power us in the interim? We'd still have our own reserves for other applications and in any event domestic drilling isn't an overnight process.

I admit that's a significant if. Let's see what happens in five years. There's never been a public call like this. We don't know what's possible.

You dont understand how government land leases work. Youre parroting the liberal environmentalists line on this topic.

Actually I haven't said a thing about government land leases nor liberal environmentalists. It is simply a fact that a national alternative energy shift does not automatically mean the government will be telling people how to build their homes or use their land. In fact as far as I can determine no current proposal would force anyone to do anything.

She used to be hot. Not bad now, though.

I wonder if there is a feature of the forum that will automatically preface each post in this thread with: "In my opinion..."
