Pippin

2. Frodo's jacket (dyed light dark blue-green)

Frodo's jacket is very long, works great for Merry, but not for Pippin who has a shorter jacket. Did you list it under Pippin with the intent of a cut-and-sew job? I will certainly require that to be accurate.

Pippin's jacket is the one item, along with the scarf, that I think you will need to find elsewhere. Perhaps a Barbie type jacket dyed the proper color as hers are generally on the small side shoulder-wise.

Oh yeah. There will need to be some alterations to Frodo's jacket, no doubt about that.

You definitely should list that in your breakdown like you do the necessity for dying. Some people might not want to get into tailoring. :)

So does your list require that we buy a 2x Frodos and a Sam to complete Merry and Pippin?

Gotta get them extra Hobbit bodies from somewhere.

You only need to buy one Frodo and one Sam and an extra Frodo jacket. The mixing and matching is contained in only those two figures (except for the extra Frodo jacket).

THE RECIPE

Merry

1. Sam's white shirt
2. Frodo's Vest (dyed yellow)
3. Frodo's jacket (dyed forest green)
4. Sam's Pants (dyed dark brown)
5. Frodo's weathertop sword and scabbard
6. Frodo's cloak (dyed grey)
7. Frodo's elven cloak.

Pippin

1. Frodo's shirt (sam's is prolly closer to accuracy but with the scarf it shouldn't matter)
2. Frodo's jacket (dyed light dark blue-green and altered to be shorter)
3. Frodo's pants (dyed dark green)
4. Sam's sword and scabbard from weather top.
5. Sam's cloak (dyed charcoal)
6. Sam's elven cloak.

Really it all comes down to the scarf. How to do it is the hardest part (seriously) about this whole custom job.

So fly to SSC.com now and buy them up!

He he... read up a few posts. We have decided (with entropy's help) that its not a sweater but an embroidered shirt. Way les trouble than a 1:6 sweater would have been. I should have changed that bit I wrote to just the scarf. :lol

Sorry for the confusion. My bad.

Something to think about - I was looking at the ToyBiz Bilbo that I have and he as a green jacket that might be right for Pippin.

I have that figure but from what I can remember, the material is super-thick and I'm not sure how it will look. Will definitely take another look at it tonight.

Pix, thanks for the parts breakdown. Truly appreciated. I started doing the same a while back but got sidetracked with other custom projects.

Something to remember......you can dye something light a darker color, but you can't dye something dark, lighter. And dying colored cloth is tricky. For example, if you try and dye something that is yellow, blue, you might end up with green.

Good points, and yes you definitely have to consider the base color when dying to a new color. Seems like 'coloring' 101 really.

Bleach works to lighten colors, but rarely will give you a plain white base. Many Dragon type army green tunics will bleach into an odd orange color.

Also -- IMPORTANT -- make note of the thread used for the stitching on any clothing you dye or bleach. More often than not, the thread will NOT BLEACH. Thus, if you take a dark blue coat, bleach it lighter then dye it red, you'll be stuck with dark blue threading.

This is important when dying Frodo's vest to a lighter yellow color. The dark mustard threads will remain mustard even if the vest bleach-dyes to a lighter yellow.

well i'm not very confindent about my dyeing ability but for the hobbits i'm willing to try.

even if i don't end up with the scarf good headsculpts and clothes somewhat close to the film will at least complete the fellowship.

even my wife can't believe they didn't finish the set and that we have only one side character mixed in there.

does anybody think sideshow might eventually just sell the hobbit size bodies at some point?

Hi, just joined up here!

I voted for Merry since there was a passable solution for Pippin I was considering trying out first.

Incidentally, Merry was one of the first custom figures I attempted to do back in 2002 with the Toybiz 12" line. Unfortunately, I could never find a head I thought was close enough to match, so it may have ended up being my first aborted custom too. I got all the way through making the major clothing pieces too, though the jacket was never a correct fit. I'll try to dig them out this weekend and take pictures to see what you guys think. The material, at least, which I still have, is a good enough match for me and took quite a bit of searching to find. I will have to completely redo them for the Sideshow bodies though (much different proportions than Toybiz). Besides, with that being 6 years ago, I'm sure I can do better this time around.
