prepare to be disappointed! Horrible controls, dull gameplay and overly-campy
I gave up after the first boss with ice powers.

I've seen you post this before. Of course the controls and the gameplay aren't going to be as good as MGS 4's and anything that came after. It's a 2006 game, back when the series was just transitioning to a 3D camera with Subsistence.

The storyline isn't the best in the series, but compared to PW and MGS V? It's pretty freakin' brilliant in that regard.

On another note, before Peace Walker, and before "V", Portable Ops was the "Missing Link Before the Rise of Outer Heaven!" :lol.

If Konami still has a gaming department, I hope they reboot the series and retcon the post MGS 4 games entirely out of the timeline.

In that case, I'm pretty sure you'll like it (as far as MGS storylines go). It still feels in line with the rest of the series and doesn't try to ineffectively break the mold by putting you in an alternate-universe that practically retcons every game in the series. If this was the last Big Boss game that discussed his rise to power, that would've been good enough.

It's connection to Snake Eater was very real and natural. The music was very similar too. It's canon, and better than anything that came after in the story department.

I suppose, but even then the game didn't have the MetalGear polish - at all. And just not fun for me. PW is the exact opposite, i felt the easier development allowed for experiment design wise.
The story in PO was not bad though, bar GreyFox and BigBoss apparent unoriginality

There's only one game set after MGS4 and its not cannon. Of you mean just released after MgS4 that's not happening, unless they just reboot the while thing, which I'm game for.
Personally I'd line if they'd keep MGS1 exactly the same and then change it from there after.

Or delete the whole franchise in an epic 'fu' to Kojima and the fanbase. Or better yet, as a form of Konami cutting off all ties from gaming.

Well, the only sequel bait in there that I can recall was the Ocelot/Solidus phone conversation. It's a pretty standalone entry.
Yeah that one, I don't hate any game in the franchise but it always bothered me that that call kinda prevents me from seeing MGS1 as completely stand alone.

I supposed it's ok for you guys since MGS2 is your favorite :lol

I need to replay it soon to see if I give it a pass and consider MGS1&2 as a single experience.

Well it's not my definitive favorite, but it's having an even battle for the favorite with MGS1. They both have very strong merits but they're completely different. I love MGS1 for the setting, characters, heavy narrative and plot. I love MGS2 for the plot and upping the ante, the Hollywood level directing, breaking of the fourth wall (which to me is an aspect that was never topped to this day) and what it did for Snake's character.

MGS is clearly the best in the series. But MGS2 is certainly a worthy successor. Plus it's pretty much the only game in the series that the story was the only complaint. The game design, levels, boss fights, pacing, AI and just about every technical aspect of that game was beloved for its time. It's truly a technical masterpiece.

Is the story the complaint, or was it just Raiden? Rehashing MGS1 I think was a mistake, but it didn't make it "bad" in my eyes... at least now. I was pretty hateful to the game, only for Raiden back then. I can tolerate him now, knowing what he becomes and knowing his purpose in it.

I think the slim also uses a regular memory card too right? I just need that OLED screen

Nope, it both uses a proprietary memory card which is crap but the slim model has an internal 1GB memory.

Wait, I thought you already had a Vita.

I guess now that Kojima's gone, Konami is finally giving PO some much needed respect. I didn't like everything about the storyline, but I thought it was more relevant to overall canon compared to the PW.

Ryan got rid of his a few years back, not sure why

That's still nice though, that PO is getting a digital re-release. I need to track it down....

I gave it to my cousin, who was recuperating from a motorcycle accident. Seemed like the right thing to do.

No, it's the only Solid title I have yet to play.

Well, it feels like the last traditional Metal Gear game. What I initially love about the series is that they always have a journey and a buildup, a sense of adventure in which is missing from subsequent MGS games like MGS4, PW and V.

Compare MGS4 where it feels like you're there just to tie things up as opposed to say, Uncharted 4 where while sill being Drake's last adventure, you still feel like you're in for a journey.

The MGS1 rehash is actually part of the mindf- to subconsciously evoke you of the good times of playing MGS1. Here's an excellent analysis on the parallels to MGS1:

Well that and a lot of the flip flopping it does with the "twists". Even I grit my teeth at some of those when I replay it. Plus there are strange insights like Otacons step mom molestation or Vamp and the Commandant of the Marine Corps love affair. Don't get me started on Rose either.

BTW has it ever been said or implied who Sunnys father is?

Oh I know, and I've read that. It's just didn't connect with people, at least not right away. After so many years, I have a vast appreciation for it after understanding it's context.

The Otacon thing... is just the worst and easily the worst section of MGS2. Personally, I hated Emma and their relationship. It didn't hurt the game for me, but still.

No idea on who the father was, I guess it's not really important. Probably someone in Sergei's unit.
