It's more the inherent sociological norms pressed by 1950-1980's judeo-christian value systems that make it feel odd.

We've been raised in a society that teaches
" Boys like guns, comics, cars, and related"
" Girls like dolls, cooking, domestics, and related"
So parents fall into the trap of caitering to this with thier children, becuase they've been "trained to think" ( or brainwashed, if you prefer) that not adhering to this promotes homosexuality, and/or other deviancy.

When I opened my mind to the idea that as an adult, I can still enjoy the things I enjoyed as a child, that "being a grownup" is an imaginary concept, All sorts of possabilites opened themselves up. I was raised in a family that DID adhere to that belief system, BUT at the same time, my Father, Mother, AND grandmother worked in education, and trianed me to think for myself, find my own answers, and reject what society considers normal, JUST becuase people say so.

Think for yourself, and don't apply the Sociological concept of " normal" to it, becuase much like Airport Security, it's an imagined thing.

TL;DR It's weird to you, becuase you've been raised to think its weird. You've become trapped by that way of thinking becuase of peer pressure.

If you enjoy something, and your enjoyment dosn't Hurt another living thing then enjoy it, and share it with others, if possible.

if it DOES cause harm to others, seek psychological help.

I don't think it's as cut and dry as that. I mean, Regular Show and Adventure Time are incredibly popular television shows that adults DO in fact watch. They get top billing on The AV Club every week. That's a show technically for kids. You don't see Johnny Test or My Little Pony on that site. And that tells you something.

I honestly don't get this show. I don't want to judge, but I just don't see why it has a large adult male fan base. I mean....I have an idea thanks to these videos I've presented, and information i've obtained thanks to certain websites, but I'd rather not insult you all today, because that would be down right nasty, instead of being not serious/douchy.

I look at something like My Little Pony, and I see it for what it is, a kinda smarter, flash animated, fun cartoon for little girls, that'll teach them the meaning of friendship and all that crap. And that's cool. I already know the power of friendship ponies. I'm good with your teachings. :lol

Are those for kids? There is some rather crude humor in both of them. According to Netflix, they're rated TV-PG. Therefore, they're not kids shows. They're not as offensive and stupid as Family Guy, but I don't think the creators are making them with kids in mind. Would I be upset if my students were at home watching that with their parents? Not really. Would I be concerned if they were at home watching it by themselves? Definitely. The protagonists are lazy, irresponsible, and awful role models. That's not true of MLP. Of course like in all sitcoms, the characters do bad things but they learn a lesson from it. The shows you keep bringing up as "kids shows" rarely have consequences for the characters' actions. They're not in the same category as MLP. The shows you love are targeted at adults. MLP wasn't targeted at adults.

All of that said, I am not bashing those two particular shows. I watch them on Netflix. I have a Mordachi and Rigby t-shirt. I don't own (nor will I own) an MLP shirt. But you can't say your cartoons are superior "kids shows." You can just say you prefer adult cartoons to children's cartoons. And I'm sure there are actual children's cartoons you'd like better but you should name drop those, not the few that you have been.

Also, I only found out about this show through SSF. I read this thread laughing hysterically at the responses from people. I was curious to see what the hubbub was and decided to watch it. I ended up liking it.

LOL...they are for kids. They're totally for kids, man. But they are made for BOYS. Boys are slackers. We love to slack off and play video games. The show shows the consequences for doing that.

And WTF, TV-PG doesn't mean not for kids...where did you get that? TV-PG is the new TV-Y7. Which was at least most of the kids shows back in the early 90's. Ren and Stimply, Rocko's Modern Life, Are you Afraid of the Dark, ect....ect...

Maybe you should watch Gravity Falls, and come back to me. That's the show made for everyone that has good, realistic morals, and consequences. Not to mention good stories.

I watched Invader Zim as a kid. I liked that show because it had NO role models. I hated that crap as a kid. I think it's weak. It's a show for entertainment. You want to sneak some morels and that **** in there, fine. But don't shove it down my face. Which is why Captain Planet is terrible, and is the worst show.

But aside from that, that's fine, the show does offer good morals, and all that crap that is good in a little girls show. I just don't understand why you guys like it so much. What am I not seeing? I didn't see anything that appealed to me as an adult.

Just one thing.

link for reference: https://www.tvguidelines.org/

TV-PG is NOT the new TV Y7.

TV-PG is TV PG. it's been there since the rating system started in 1997.

it goes
TV-Y
TV-Y7
TV-Y7 FV ( Fantasy Violence)
TV-G
TV-PG
TV-14
TV-MA

Star Trek of any flavor has always carried a TV-PG rating, as long as the rating system has existed. I wouldnt call that "children targetted".

I'd say that The shows you mentioned are likely for Mid-to-late teens, whereas MLP, for example is target to preteen to early teen, and younger.

As to Why we like it, I'll give you a list of reasons.
It's some of the best writing in a cartoon show in a LOOONG time. there iss ALOT of CRAP out there.
It dosn't pander to gender sterotypes.

It's just a fun show

Not trying to ratonalize anything. Don't need to. It's a show. I like it. you don't? That's fine. :D

Celtic was asking WHY I liked it, so i''m attempting to answer his question.

Rationalizeation implies it's wrong. Which is silly.

While I agree with this, I do think I have less people raising an eyebrow at my Star Wars/Batman figures than the Build-A-Bear Pinkie Pie I received as a birthday gift. That said, I don't plan on stashing either in a closet when I have company.

That's the attitude! No matter what anyone tells you, sex is over-rated.

soo.. wait... i'm a little lost here.

Are you saying that cons like SDCC and joecon, and 1/6thstravaganza, and the action figure show don't exist?

or are you saying that the Sex toy industry conventions, and adult film indusrty conventions, and Real doll conventions don't exist?

Becuase either way, i assure you, you're wrong.

My original point was this.

ALL FANDOM'S HAVE CREEPY DEVIANTS, and those creepy deviants do not represent the whole of the fandom.

Attributing the item in his link to Everyone who likes MLP that isn't a 10 year old girl, is the same as atributing my analogy to EVERYONE on this forum.

Get it through your head - IT'S CREEPY TO COLLECT PONIES AND GO TO CONVENTIONS FOR A SHOW MADE FOR 5 YEAR OLD GIRLS.

You may not like it and think it's unfair but that's the reality.

this conversation reminds me of that silly video someone posted a while back

[ame]https://youtu.be/t6023crXgIQ[/ame]

now while this is a comedy video. There is something really bizarre about two girls playing with brony figures.
Also, that video pretty much gets on every cliche that bronies get.
Like the cargo pants joke or the joke about being in love with one of the ponies.

but then you get videos like this

It's a pony sex toy. Seriously, I'm not making a joke here, just tell your daughter to stay away from the internet when it comes to these things. Also, don't wear pony shirts in public. They will come to her and discuss their love for the show with her...

and then those cliches they were making fun in the first video become real, which gets really weird. Is the guy joking? is it another comedy video? who knows.

I had no interest in My Little Pony, nor did I want to...then I heard about these Bronies....yikes That's my knowledge of the show.

I had no interest in homosexual clowns, nor did I want to...then I heard about John Wayne Gacy...yikes. That's my knowledge of homosexual clowns.

:dunno

Grown men trying to rationalize watching this ---> :rotfl

Where's your Twilight signature, bub?

Wow. You're so snarky and hip.

While conflating a genuine appreciation for a cartoon with rabid fanaticism is the epitome of dim, there's something extra stupid going on with anyone who sits through all these posts and still can't let go of their ********* presumptions. There's oblivious, and there's neurotically compelled to be thick as a brick. So which is it? Dumb, or clinging to a played out joke as a way to define your own fragile sense masculinity? I understand that years of being used as a racist knuckle-dragger's surrogate ***** can do that to a person, so don't feel that I'm judging you or anything. I can be fair. But, if you're going to try and be the barrel delivering reality through other people's heads, you should be prepared to have that gun held to your own.

You should check out Gravity Falls, Regular Show, and Adventure Time. They are all very well written, and they include more references to far more adult/obscure things then that.

The attraction to MLP is well beyond its potential adult themes. That's pretty much incidental. The real value is in the lack of malevolence in the art's universe. Rather, the anti-malevolence. Evil is an unnatural thing in Ponyville. When it rears its head, it is summarily decapitated, and then invited for cupcakes.

Perhaps you haven't had enough of the world's cynicism yet to be sick of it.

I got over the Twilight thing after the first book and movie. Only then did I realize I was stepping into teen girl land. I have since corrected my ways. :lecture:yess:

Oh man, Merle thought his C game was enough to cut it in the Pony thread :lol

Like I said, I don't think anything negative about anyone who watches the show. If you find some happiness in watching it, good for you.

But don't be so naive to believe there's not something inherently creepy in taking the next step toward collecting ponies, displaying them on your wall and going to conventions dressed as a pony.
