As part of my collection reboot i am buying a new curio to display them. Took me a very long time to finally find a classy piece that has enough depth and unobstructed view. Macy said the factory had to custom make this and wont be ready until dec so all my stuff are boxed up rigth now :(.

Anyway i am a bit concerned if this thing can handle the weight, i plan to eventually put 3x lotr riders + gollum pf + sauron vs soliders + snow troll + wetanz rivendell all on ONE level.

Is the glass strong enough to handle them? if you zoom in on the curio you can see the holes that hold the glasses are stainless steel so that should be no problem, the main question is will the glass be strong enough to hold all of this?

Noone at macy seem to know, they dont have the max weight spec for the glasses.

Re: curio/glass weight question

That curio is really spacious, good score. Most glass has a breaking weight limit and should be specified by the maker/dealer. Can't wait to see your LOTR cabinet when you get it & fill it up.

Re: curio/glass weight question

I have one very similar to this and the weight limit is 25 lbs. per shelf, if that helps.

Re: curio/glass weight question

25 lb? that's barely enough weight for 1 statue :/

how many do you keep per shelf?

Re: curio/glass weight question

My 3 curios each have 3/8" glass shelves and hold quite a bit of weight. However, for the really heavy pieces (like the steed & riders), I put them on the bottom (wooden base) to ensure I don't stress the glass as well as to ensure the curio doesn't become top-heavy. I've also got 2 other curios that I replaced the 1/8" glass (standard for many curios BTW) with 3/8" glass.

Re: curio/glass weight question

i might have to get a custom made acrylic shelving for peace of mind. Can you imagine if the glass broke and everything on the top shelves come crashing down to the lower shelves :/

correct me if wrong think acrylic is much stronger.

Re: curio/glass weight question

I thought so too so I invested in 3/8" acrylic shelves. Strong...right? Yes, but I found out that no matter the thickness, acrylic is, after all, plastic. And they bend and sag - even in a temperature-controlled environment - when weight is put on them. That's when I decided to replace with the thicker glass.

I actually just keep smaller pieces in my curio for the reason of weight.

It is currently home to some mini-busts, 12-inch figs, etc.
