Who are the Deep Ones, or do I not want to know?

I was just geeking out a bit with an H. P. Lovecraft reference. The Deep Ones are an ancient race of humanoid beings who live in the ocean, and who "mate" with humans in order to propagate their race. Creepy beasties for sure. Their initial appearance, which is also probably the best story in which they appear, is "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."
