Perhaps you never looked at average scores of games in the 1960's and 70's? Often scores were 124 to 122. And even higher in the ABA - and that is alternative old school.
By old school I mean lots of pick and rolls, setting screens, moving without the ball, and hitting the open man. Thats pretty much the opposite of the "clear eveybody out of the way and see if I can dunk on this chump so the rubes get off their fat ***** and cheer" sort of basketball which has been around for the last fifteen years.
