Yeah I think that'd be a good idea. In isolation the circle base might have been fine but now that you've turned it into more of a diorama the circle base looks odd, unless you were to recess it into the floor.

Well I'll probably get the warrior up there too. So a flat base will do all around better.

Starting to darken him up. This digital camera punches up the color like crazy. He isn't this yellow in real life. I darkened the lips and rear of the dome. Starting to look like the shoddily airbrushed suit that Bolaji wore.

Just noticed the metal looking thing that looks like it is hanging from the cheek tube is really neodymium magnets stuck to the top of my spray booth. Lol!

Truly looks great. Could you share how you removed the dome?

...great work, the painting is really complementing that amazing sculpt and the lips don't look so dumb now

It gave you a sense of how big the Alien was in that scene. Lambert had nowhere to run!!

That image freaked me out. I hope we get an alien film one day that captures the clostrophobia and dirt of ALIEN. I think what made it so great was how logical the whole thing was. It all made perfect sense , with people that were normal average folk. I really hope Ridley doesn't take out all the mystery with the next one.

Lamberts death was the scariest part of the movie I think. Frozen in her place and the shrieking off camera.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. To summarize what I've done so far:

I don't know if all domes are like this, but mine had more of an overhang on the left side. I was able to get my thumbnail underneath and gently lift it. I also popped more loose by squeezing the dome between my thumb and forefinger. Once I worked it loose to the back, I had to use an exacto knife to cut along the seam that runs in the back and carefully peel it off.

For the body, I did not prime it. This may bite me later if the paint wants to lift, but it's a toy so I don't mind too much. I drybrushed Delta Ceramcoat Maple Sugar Tan all over hitting the raised areas. Especially the ribs and ribbing.

I then misted the entire figure with Tamiya smoke. To darken further, I mixed up a concoction of Ceramcoat Black and India Ink. This was airbrushed all over in a tight, irregular pattern to get a mottled effect on the skin. I would then mist areas or concentrate on the recesses to give them depth.

If I ever went overboard, I would just drybrush the tan again. I was really careful around the lips because I still wanted them to be translucent. I also painted the thin ridge on both lips black. Really makes them pop.

Next, I'm gonna seal the whole thing with Testors Dull Coat, work on the dome a bit, and then gloss him up. I don't want to go overboard on the gloss because that has a tendency to kill any shading you may have done. The ribbing and veining on the dome is really heavy so I just plan on toning that down.

Bit confused - are there actually two different versions of the 1/4 scale Neca Alien up for sale - an open mouth and a closed mouth version ?

Yup, Neca put out a close lipped version and a snarling lipped version where you can see the teeth.

If ordering online you won't be able to choose versions, unless you go thru Ebay where the seller will specifically describe which version they're selling.
