No, what doesn't work is this insinuation that your particular tastes in the matter of the Aliens franchise constitute some sort of binding and canonical vision. There is no "idea" where the franchise is concerned, because the franchise itself is nothing but the output of an ever-changing group of artists, writers, directors, often with vastly different interpretations of their own.

Dont make me laugh. The Marines have been criminally under-utilised in the franchise as a whole (generally, it seems, in favour of either Ripley or some transparent Ripley ripoff), and it wasn't Cameron who made Ripley the centre of the universe, it was Fincher.
..."don't make me laugh" have you ever seen any behind the scenes about Aliens? Soldiers were the producers idea and the studio didn't want Ripley because they didn't wanted to pay Sigourney what she deserved. It was Cameron who wanted to make a story about Ripley and wrote the script for her. I guess facts don't matter to most Aliens fans huh?

When did Alien became about Aliens vs Marines? From toys to comics and videogames we've been bombarded by that, just because it's more toyetic and commercial. The movies were never about that. Remember that first movie? No soldiers! *gasp* Marines played a part in only one of them

Yeah personally I've grown tired of the Ripley story. I think a far more interesting story was where they went with the Alien Isolation game. Just start over with Amanda Ripley and have her obsession with finding her mother lead her into contact with the Xenomorph world. Just I hope they don't just copy parts of the Ellen Ripley story.

Your description reminded me of some cool concept art of weaponized Xenos I found while looking for other Alien related images. I don't know what or where this is from but I love the idea:

I like this idea more than the stupid looking Xeno armor and weapon concepts that were produced in the Insight Editions Weyland-Yutani Report book.

That is a pretty cool pic. You know, despite what Resurrection is to a lot of fans, one of the big ideas that was hinted at I think but never fully explored is that in a way Ripley 8 IS what WY were after in the beginning in a messed up way - a controllable weaponised Alien soldier. Think about it. Once they work out how to speed up and perfect the cloning of a a alien / human hybrid that is more human than alien BUT still has the super strength, speed and agility - they are on the path for a unique army.

Could you guys imagine where the franchise would be now if we never got Aliens and just skipped to Alien 3... I guess at least we would of never got Alien Resurrection.

Aliens is probably the biggest reason why this franchise is still alive and it was exactly what the franchise needed and has given it that staying power. Aliens blended exactly what Alien was into a bigger albeit more action style movie. But in terms of continuity it worked perfectly and no-one can fault that, if you have good ideas for a sequel but it's a different sort of movie then fine but make sure it's a bloody good movie that the fans can enjoy!

If you want to make the same movie again but refine it and make it into something even better then you still need good ideas and believe it or not it's still got to be a bloody good movie! yes looking at you A3, it tried to be like the first movie but failed quite poorly. It's not because people just wanted more marines, it's because 85% of planet earth's inhabitants knows a good movie from a bad one. That's not to say you can't like it 3 & 4, just that well... count yourself lucky that you're in the small percentage that has got more Alien movies to enjoy.

We got Alien Isolation recently and that proved that the franchise can go back to it's original roots. But the point is it was good and a lot more than 20% of the fans that played it could enjoy it.

Really we only got 2 movies: Alien & Aliens and if you was to ask fans which one they prefer or is more recognisable / memorable than I think it's probably Aliens? which is why we have seen more extended universe stuff etc. from that film instead of Alien.

let's put it this way - If Aliens was an ok - bad movie with the same plot with the Marines etc. do we still think it would of got the same press, coverage, toys, video games etc. ? No! Alien would've still been in the spotlight. But if this happened I think that probably would of been the end of the series.

Believe it or not by having Aliens the way it is today, Alien is able to still get attention because the franchise is still alive.

oh yeah. i thought Dead Space was scary, but now i think it was nice and cozy.
i'm in the lair now, if all before it was much better than A1 itself, now it's the best lair from A2 i met.
and it was so wonderful to walk on LV426 again (despite stupid procrapius blue lights system), so yes, it's a great great gift to A1 to make it alive again.

Can we make a thread in the movies section for film talk? I come here for figure news and keep seeing essays on the franchise.

That would be cool!

Anyway, back to some figure news, Neca announcement(s) should be up soon. What do you guys think it will be? I'm guessing Terminator and something Turtles related?

...yes! let's talk toys because the other one it's a discussion with no ending xD

Yup, that's my guess too. I was hoping for 7" movie TMNT figures, but Randy just said they have no current plans for that. I'm having trouble remembering "impossible" stuff that hasn't been confirmed as a big "nope" recently

I believe it was last week when Randy was asked again about a Weller Robocop and he said no likeness rights. That is the one that stands out in my mind.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here but it would be awesome if we found out they were able to get Al Matthews likeness rights and Apone would get made. I know I'm being greedy because of my love for the Aliens line so please forgive me if I stir up the hornets nest.

I'd buy a BD Robo with Weller likeness although I wouldn't be massively excited about it since Robocop is a character who I feel really needs high-end production for him to be done justice....and that has already happened and I have one.

I'm hoping it's T2 John Connor, I think a lot of signs point to that....

I'd definitely be happy with either of those but if it's John I sure hope Neca has a plan other than just as exclusive to get this out to us.

It'd probably follow an identical pattern to Newt. An exclusive with accessories and a wider distribution 2 pack with no accessories.

It's been talked about that the SDCC possibly cracked down on the exclusives this year and that was the reason why Newt with the accessories couldn't be sold outside of the Con, maybe John will be a NYCC exclusive without the limitations? It would be nice to get him with the whatever accessories he would come with as opposed to a stripped down version with a previously released figure. I'll get one regardless!
