Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I don't think you have anything to worry about with respect to the likeness. These chaps can sculpt. It is spot on, and I am damned fussy (as you can probably tell).

Interesting to hear that no one else has the grey face thing going on. I am now looking more closely at it, and there is even what appears to be a drip of grey wash going down the side of his face. It has now clouded over and I have no light, but I will take some macro picture as soon as I can so you can tell me if I am being overly picky (quite possibly) or whether the paintwork on mine looks different to yours. Certainly, the paintwork on Wookster's figure is just all over better, in terms of eveness of eyes etc. Anyway, you can decide when I have snapped some shots.

Go back a few pages and look at mine. The light made things a little blurry, but the tone is accurate.

Mine certainly doesn't have a grey face. I'm not gonna lie, it is not quite Hot Toys standard, but it is darned close and can stand alongside any high end collection very comfortably. Sadly my shutterbug skills leave a lot to be desired, but in hand, held alongside and compared to some of my favourites it still manages to look great and impress.

That is a great recommendation coming from you. Thanks alot.

OK. Here are some macro shots of the face. Of course, the grey doesn't show up as well in photos as in life, because we wouldn't want life to be too easy now, would we? But I hope you can see it around the chin and cheeks in the frontal shot and can see the "drips" down the cheeks in the two profile shots. The colours are pretty true, at least on my monitor, which is fairly well calibrated.

There is a drip going from the sideburn here. You can also see some of the wash along the line of the jaw.

The drips are down the cheek and jaw on this side.

So, what do you think? Do yours look like that and it is no biggy, or is that a dud?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I think I see what you mean. Sort of makes his face look a bit dirty. Not sure it would bug me ver much though.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Hmmm, kind of see what you mean. Mine does have a very light grayish wash to hint at a 3 0'clock shadow, but not quite as dark as that.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

See, I wondered if that was what is was supposed to be and that someone got a bit overexuberant with it and splashed it all over his face. But, seeing it in close up there, it looks as though at least some of it has dribbled from his hair and sideburns.

The reason why it bothers me is that I take photos of these figures and this stuff shows up more in close up photography than in life (although he does look grimey in life as well).

ETA: Here is a, perhaps unfair, comparison with the T-800 face, taken in the same lighting conditions. The T-800 has all sorts of colour washes on it, but they are in the right places. And the paintwork is such that I can take extreme close ups and he still looks realistic. Now, I am not implying that Big Chief should have reached this level of perfection at this early stage, but it is just to show that this is what I do with my figures, that it is not the crappy light having that effect and that this is why that dribbled wash bothers me. I'm sure I'll get over it.

Yikes, I would contact BCS about a replacement. Not even comparing it to the T-800, that doesn't look right.

Looks wrong. I agree contact big chief mate

Cheers on the opinions, guys. What I want to make sure of is that this isn't just the way they are. If it is, I just have to lump it. If others have been made without the grime, then I will contact them about a replacement. It has not ruined the thing for me. I know I commented on it in my first post having received mine, but it was only after looking at Wookster's photos that I thought this might not be right and that others don't have this issue. It is beginning to sound as though this might be the case.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Paint looks real flat... also the undertextured nature of the sculpt maybe making it even worse... looks too, how to put it, synthetic

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Mau, I totally agree that looks wrong. Having had a similar thing happen to me last year (a Reeve Superman that was practically mahogany in colour) I can also see how it could look worse in life than in a picture, but even so the picture gives enough of an indication. I would say contact BC and ask for a replacement.

That comparison with the HT Terminator, while somewhat unfair, is pretty instructive. BC ought to print it off and put it on their noticeboard - it shows how far they need to go in terms of texture, detail, and 'depth' of sculpt, not to mention the ability to choose an expression that is somehow both neutral and yet expresses emotion that is central to the character. This is in no way to denigrate what they've done - 11 is a great likeness, and phenomenal work for a first release from a new company, but there's always room to improve. Hope this is taken as constructive criticism, as I have a huge amount of goodwill for this company.

And to prove it, tonight at 6.10pm I put my money where my mouth was, took the proceeds from an unexpectedly high ebay sale, and ordered mine! YEAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! Pick me out a great paint job please, BC!

I wonder if they would be willing to send just a replacement head, since that seems to be the only issue.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Has the 11th Doctor start to ship to places like BBTS or AlterEgo yet?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

4th Doctor is looking good. I thought it would, but the head sculpt I'd looking fantastic.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Excellent choice of expression. That's always been my favorite of Tom's mugging expressions, with eyes bugged and the slight frown.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I think the window between launch and release of this figure will be much tighter than 11th. And with Amy still in work, we might even see this before Amy.
A year ago, the idea of 12" Doctor seemed very neat, then there was the companion, so we had a pair of figures, but now it's in our faces that we are getting a collection ... :yess:
