Very disappointed with Sideshow on this one. I mean, when you charge this much money for something that doesn't look as good or as accurate as a Hasbro item? That's pretty bad.

I'm hoping this will look better (more shiny) with a spotlight over it, and not sideshow's usual 'floodlit' photos.

There's still a lot wrong with it though... the angels on the top are too bulky, the wings almost aim up and not flat, they're too big, the shoulders are too round.... I could go on. basically.. they look too thick and not sleek enough.

Also the feet are way too chunky at the bottom, the pole is possibly (not sure on this one) too short... and the fabric (whilst a nice touch) is the wrong colour completely. It should be red as the main colour.

(I'm ignoring things like how many shapes go across the top of the lid (11 vs. 12.. or something similar)

The shape just doesnt look.... right.

And obviously the big one... it's not shiny enough. But like I said.. with a spotlight... maybe it will be better. (dammit wish I could decide whether to keep this or not lol)

Yeah, I'm really close to canceling this too.

It just seems like an obscene amount of money. I was really hoping the Ark would turn out great, so the whole purchase would seem worthwhile. But $170 for a so-so sculpt and a not-so-accurate Ark is a bit too rich for my blood.

I'm still happy with my Belloq. I never thought he was as bad as everyone thought he was. I think the pedestal was completely worth the money, and $140 for the Belloq Ex seems very fair.

And speaking of Belloq, both the regular and Ex are still around for sale, so maybe Toht will be around for a while. I may cancel him now and pick him up later when I have more funds in the bank!

I agree with you, except I did think the main color on the poles was more purple.

I'm hoping the paint will at least look as "shiny" as the idol that came with Indy.

Maybe I'm dumb and naive, but I just don't understand how there is a problem getting this sculpt dead on. The more I look, the less I like the fat angels, and the number of railings around the top is wrong. Why should I, an amateur with only the public resources of pictures on the internet and books, be able to criticize this at all? I can understand actors' likenesses being hard to do, but this is just so much more simple. Isn't there a team that looks at a sculpt, says this is good, fix this etc. before it ever gets approved to send to Lucasfilm? It seems ridiculous that just glancing at it I can see things wrong. Why can't the pros? They must know we prize accuracy to the film look. This keeps happening, I just don't get it!

Not what I was expecting in the level of detail and accuracy Sideshow can put into a poly piece. Along with the other issues mentioned, the lid just doesn't seem long enough. Glad I just stuck with the regular Toht. He came out fine at that price range and all I'm willing to spend at this point.

Yep! :lecture

I'm keeping mine, but the angels wings are too short and it is the matte paint that just absolutely destroys this piece.
It kills it - utterly.

Why can't they gold leaf plate it or gold chrome paint it?

Look at the matte idol and the gold idol from Gentle Giant. There is no question which looks better!

Is this the Vader helmet debate?:huh

...oh wait...they just balked on another product....sorry...as you were:rolleyes:

...you think we can get them to apologize for both mistakes at the same time at SDCC?

I guess it depends on the material and surface, usually to get good gold you spray gloss black, then a metallic chrome (or gold) paint... but if this surface is dull it might not work.

The big thing for me (unless it looks LOTS better in person) is that I'd end up resculpting all 4 feet... and the angels.. and the wings

and that just seems like such a hassle to have to do on an expensive polystone piece.

Here's the Alclad page that shows how their product uses that process:

BTW, I've spent the last half hour in the forum trying to find an image of the prototype ark on which someone diagrammed in red the wrong number of rail points, the incorrect feet, etc. This would be a great way to see how much or how little the production version has improved. Does anyone know which post I'm talking about?
