Two swings and miss for Sideshow on the ark.
Hasbro trumps SS, never thought Id write that.
No excuses.

I've spent the last half hour in the forum trying to find an image of the prototype ark on which someone diagrammed in red the wrong number of rail points, the incorrect feet, etc. This would be a great way to see how much or how little the production version has improved. Does anyone know which post I'm talking about?

I don't know where it is, but I know the one you mean. I checked though... it's exactly the same apart from the pole wrappings (although even they're not that different)

The feet are the same, and the rail loops are still 11 vs. 12 ( I think those are the numbers)

I love the fact that this is going to be heavy... but considering the price I really wanted this to be right. Or at least not *obviously* visibly wrong :(

Here is what the original pole wrap looks like for anyone who wants to compare it to SS. Looks to me as though they've failed to even match the colors correctly. I know so scaled down the design would be tough to completely replicate but there is no reason the color should be off when there is so much reference out there.

They could have nailed the wrappings exactly and it still would matter little to me, because the Ark itself is so inaccurate.

Seriously though, it's just the ark - it's a background pice. This isn't a major character or anything. I mean, Hasbro or SS, both have good points and bad.

Hasbro: overall has the correct shape (although if you really look the angels are incorrect too) but the poles suck, the coloring on the pole wraps is wrong and it's plastic. The "gold plating" is only on the box, not the angels.

SS: angels are too big thus having stubby wings, the box itself seems a bit squat. But the poles are removable and the wrap is more accurate and real material, and the 'artwork' on the sides of the box look better to me, more realistic.

For a prop piece to go with the 1/6th characters -- which are more important to me -- the SS piece OR the Hasbro works fine.

Of course, there's only one way to really tell: have both in hand.

I know what you mean. The ark is ultimately just a prop. But it's the most important prop for a Raiders collection, since it's the movie's macguffin. Unfortunately, those who missed out on the Hasbro ark, which seems to be the superior one, only have the Sideshow one as an option. $70 bucks just doesn't seem worth it for either of them, though! Maybe slightly more worth it for Sideshow's since it's polystone.

The Gentle Giant business card holder ark and Diamond Select ark bank are longshots that they'll be any good at all, or that they'd be in the proper 1/6 scale.

well, I thought long and hard about this, and then cancelled it. A real shame because I was really looking forward to it, but I just can't justify exchange plus international shipping for a figure I'm not 100% happy with. By the time they ship this to Canada I add at least 50% to the figure cost and I'd rather keep my AH comiqettes at less. She hulk just looks better : )

hey there is a big difference here. hasbro put a good ark out. with ^^^^ty action figures there 12 inch were not bad but not good either . come on folks. when you give half of the3 3/4 figures cross eyes or extra eyelids or eyes on the cheeks. there going ot have to take make a piece that you mail away for and out do the other stuff.
i liked the line of indiana jones toys..but it was only getting better as the line was moving on. then cancelled because stores were stuck with pieces they could not get rid of ..
sideshow makes good pieces. i do like both arks.maybe you can fill the sideshow ark with sand and not have it leak..
so the sideshow ark is not perfect. but it looks like it has that feel of old.

LMAO! In a couple of years this thing will probably be the most sought after of the Sideshow Indy collectibles. Those that canceled will be regretting it later when it's selling for 2-3 times as much.

To each their own. I would dump She-Hulk in an instant to keep ANYTHING Indy.

What other sideshow 1:6 is selling for 2-3 times as much? Luke Jedi is the only one I can think of.

Nazi Kroenen too... which is a bit like Toht in his affiliation. :)

Not sure how Toht will sell in the future. Seems like the whole Indy thing is really a generational thing. Only time will tell.

But like Belloq says: bury this in the sand for a thousand years and it becomes priceless. Like the ark. Men will kill for it. Men like you, and me.

Yes, PZ doesn't really count as he was only 300, but there were 1K Nazi Kroenens same as the Ark. But all the cancellations make me think he'll be fairly easy to pick up later for cost.

He was limited to 500. But yeah that's another rare & $$$ one.

D'Hoffryn was 750 and is also more than retail.

But since there was also a regular version of Toht, and a Hasbro Ark, I doubt this one will reach expensive secondary market status.

Pfft! If you collect for value, maybe. Personally, I just collect stuff that I like. And I like stuff that looks good and accurate, so this won't qualify no matter what it's "worth".

Some of the POTA stuff is doing well aftermarket, especially the stuff from the tail end of the line b/c it was limited to like 500 pcs. The Forbidden Zone Taylor usually goes for a good chunk of change. But that was before SSC went "mainstream."
