Although funny you would categorize "real fans" as those that do follow EU. I admit to being an OT snob, I prefer them and feel that they represent what is best about SW. I'm okayish with the PT, but they sucked fairly hard and so when I think of SW I certainly put the OT as the benchmark.

While some EU stuff is cool; a lot of is hardly better than fanfiction and often times create characters intentionally to pander to fans. Darth Talon is prime example... "hmmm, Maul is a popular character, what if he had ********?" Just not something I have interest in.

However, as I said in my original post... I'm fine if Sideshow makes them as it does give me a break from buying figures. Although I also understand people want them to be made even if I think they're silly.

You're stopping at just how the character looks, without even giving the material she's from a chance.
lets take it from the top, shall we?

Maul is a Zabrak. His whole body is covered in red and black tattoos
Talon is a Twilek. Her skin is red, she has some black tats on her body.
Established canon is that twileks Wear very little. Take a look at both the PT, and the OT.

Yes, she's cheesecake in her design, but so is Leia's metal bikini.
If you'd pick up the material she's from and actually READ it, you might be surprised, and even enjoy it.

this is the OT elitists/not a true fan mentality I was referring too. You're completely dismissing the content out of hand, based soly on the appearance of one character.
IF you've read a few books of the legacy comics, and then decided you didn't like them, that's one thing.
Dismissing it out of hand without experiencing it is something else altogether.

Now, IF i'm mistaken, and you have given legacy a chance, and still didn't care for it, i'll gladly appologise.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, and i mean no disrespect by my post, It's just that on these boards, those of us who appreciate the EU tend to get a great deal of disrespect, so we tend to get a little defensive.

to anyone unfamiliar with the EU, my advice is this. download a few free chapters from the publishers websites, and see if you like the stories for yourself.
Get a SW comic on Free comic book day. you might be surprised with what you find.

Hwy, at-least you actually tried it :D

More than i can say for ALOt of people.

in all fairness, a great deal of the EARLy EU stuff was terrible.
Which is why so many people are reluctant to give the newer stuff a chance.

Really though, I don't have any interest in finding out why Darth Maul turned into a cyborg chicken guy, where "**** music" originates from, etc. But then, I try my best not to make condescending, judgmental comments about it, so. . .that's gotta count for something, right? Right?

Honestly, this is why I find talking/typing about SW less and less fun all the time. Its kind of going on the same shelf as Politics and Religion as far as I'm concerned. Really for me from the PT to the EU some of its cool but not great. Its hard to find a SW fan that can be accepting without be a snob and rude.

fair enough. though, what about the recreation of the jedi order post ROTJ?

Political infighting and intrigue done properly.

The Vong war is a little weird, but it gets pretty neet about 1/2 way through.

The Darth Caidus/ Jacen Solo Story arch.

PT era novels that make Anakin a likable character.

There is some REALLY good stuff out there

I prefer the audio-books personally. 5-14 hours long each, and It's a 30 min drive to work for me every day. makes the long drive bearable.

Never been into audio books. Thinking about getting The Silmarillion though as thats a pretty tough read.

I love audiobooks (the Harry Potter ones are the absolute best). Any SW ones you recommend?

So far, my favorite ones would be the Legacy of the Jedi series
Betrayal by Aaron Allston—May 30, 2006
Bloodlines by Karen Traviss—August 29, 2006
Tempest by Troy Denning—November 28, 2006
Exile by Aaron Allston—February 27, 2007
Sacrifice by Karen Traviss—May 29, 2007
Inferno by Troy Denning—August 28, 2007
Fury by Aaron Allston—November 27, 2007
Revelation by Karen Traviss—February 26, 2008
Invincible by Troy Denning—May 13, 2008

and then the Fate of the Jedi series
Outcast by Aaron Allston—March 24, 2009[3]
Omen by Christie Golden—June 23, 2009[3]
Abyss by Troy Denning—August 18, 2009[4]
Backlash by Aaron Allston—March 9, 2010[5]
Allies by Christie Golden—May 25, 2010[6]
Vortex by Troy Denning—November 30, 2010[7]
Conviction by Aaron Allston—May 24, 2011[8]
Ascension by Christie Golden—August 9, 2011[9]
Apocalypse by Troy Denning—April 3, 2012

before those two story arcs, the Dark nest Trilogy, and the Vong War take place.

The vong war first, the dark nest trilogy second. While not as good as Fate of the jedi, and Legacy, they help lay the groundwork for both series.

now, if you know NOTHING about any of the EU, I'd suggest starting with the PT era stuff, and just working through all of it. INCLUDING the novel versions of the films.

Things to avoid:
Most things by Kevin J Anderson, Especially the Jedi Academy Series. it's kinda-sorta ok, but the story from those books gets condensed down in I, Jedi, which is a much superior book .
and Generaly, Anderson's writing leaves a little to be desired.
Splinter of the minds Eye- Goofy Story, it was the original pitch for a sequel to ANH, as a made for TV movie, if ANH did not do too great at the box office.

:horror Whoah!

Thanks lerath! That is a lot to sort through! Any one audiobook in particular that is outstanding or just a good place to start?
