I didn't get to watch any football yesterday, except for the first half of the Atlanta / Dallas game. Dallas looked good that first half, until they gave up that field goal right before the half. Left the house to run errands with some concern…and of course, my concern was warranted.
Looking at the final score as well as the fact that the Cowboys gave up 25 straight points (field goal before the half, three touchdowns in the second half), it’s easy to pin that on the defense. But it’s not that simple. I still think the Dallas defense will be a pleasant surprise this year; maybe not a top ten defense, but not the defensive sieve some expect them to be. After all, they’re still missing their two best pass rushers (Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory), and their starting middle linebacker (Rolando McClain)…not to mention their best cover corner / slot corner Orlando Scandrick is out for the year.
What’s more concerning is the offense. Joseph Randle had 92 yards in the first half. He finished the game with 87 yards. The offensive line is the strength of this team, but other teams will load the box against Dallas. Weeden only completed passes to one wide receiver, slot receiver Cole Beaseley. Garrett and Scott Linehan need to call some downfield passes to at least attempt to keep opposing defenses honest. Atlanta was able to come back because Dallas couldn’t sustain any offense and keep their defense off the field.
Though Atlanta’s 3-0, and maybe the best NFC East team with their 3-0 record against the NFC East (and for those with their sarcasm meter off, I’m being facetious, as I know Atlanta’s in the NFC South), I’m not completely sold on them yet. They withstood a Philadelphia rally and were able to hold on, came back against an Giants team that made multiple mistakes in their first two games, and beat a wounded Cowboys team.
Having said all that, week 2 is in the books, and it’s far too early to make any real judgments. Last season, the sky was falling for the Packers, and after the Chiefs scored 41 points on the Patriots. Those teams turned out pretty well.
EDIT: Just read that the Cowboys only rushed the ball FIVE times in the second half? WTF?
