I’ll play Devil’s advocate. Keep in mind that I have lived in the DC area for going on 40 years (damn, I hate reminding myself I’m getting old), and have never been a Washington fan (in fact, a Dallas fan). Nor am I a Kaepernick fan. I’m ambivalent about him, I don’t care one way or the other. And I’m not going to comment about the political ramifications of bringing in/signing Kaepernick (though YES, the public relations aspect/optics of the situation would be huge, as well as a distraction).
When Alex Smith went down, these are the QBs that Washington brought in for a workout to possibly sign to back up Colt McCoy: EJ Manuel, Kellen Clemens, Mark Sanchez, TJ Yates, and Josh Johnson.
That ^ says it all. Now, I know good backup QBs aren’t sitting at home mid season and available...but don’t you think if that group of QBs were brought in for a look, it wouldn’t have hurt to see Kaepernick as well? But of course, Washington didn’t want to deal with the PR...but claimed Reuben Foster off the waiver wire.
It’s true Kaepernick hasnt played in two/three seasons and no one knows what shape he’s in...or IF he’d even agree to meet/workout with Washington based on his own political views. But he led San Francisco to a Super Bowl and back to the NFC Championship game the following season. Granted, Sanchez led the Jets deep in the playoffs a few times, but Kaepernick has done more than anyone on that list above. Is he miles better than the QBs that we’re brought in? Debatable. But is he worse? Well, probably PR wise...
Again, I have no dog in this fight. Just showing the other side.
Like mfoga said, Washington should just throw in the towel and tank for a better pick. They’re done this season. They’re 5-23 on MNF since 1998. I can see Dan Snyder posing patience and getting rid of Jay Gruden so he can bring in a “Super Bowl winning coach” in anime McCarthy, LOL.
EDIT: Posting on a phone sucks. That last line should have read “I can see Dan Snyder losing patience”...”Super Bowl winning coach in Mike McCarthy”.
