I have thought, going back to the "historic" Patriots run, that the real insult would be to stop playing at the end of the game. To me, that's the sign of disrespect. It's essentially taking pity on their opponents instead of challenging them until the end. Do guys like Brooking really want to be treated as sorry little kids who the "big bad" winners have to show pity?

Look, in little league, high school, even college I'm against running up the score. I saw the high school basketball team trying to score 200 against some much crappier team a few weeks ago, and thought the coach should have been fired outright. Because these are kids and they should be playing for the joy of the game and not trying to humiliate their opponents.

The NFL is professional football. Grown men being paid ridiculous sums of money to win games. Not to be good "sports," not to please people (except in winning), just to win. In that context, the whining about running up the score is just silly in my opinion. Hell, it's happened to the Saints on many occasions over the years, but I was just mad at the Saints when it did happen.

Excessive celebration and acting like a jerk is one thing. Teams that keep playing even though they're ahead? Nothing wrong with it.

Oh man. Our Saints of the past were usually victims. Mostly to teams like the San Francisco 49ers. During the heyday of Montana and Rice, they would pick us apart, and blow it out! More than once.

I agree with you about these being professional athletes being paid money most of us will never see in our lifetimes. I've seen more of the "let's just kneel the ball" than "let's score one more time" attitude. But the other attitude of scoring until the final whistle is still there too.

C'mon if the Cowboys were leading and could have scored one more time, they would have. Just to rub it in on the Vikings. I see nothing wrong with scoring at every opportunity. It's not "over until it's over", "until the fat lady sings", and all that right?

I also agree with you karamazov about not running up the score in little league. That's just outright wrong. Children play the games for the thrill and fun of playing. They should be able to hold on to that innocence as long as they can. My daughter's girl's basketball team got blown out by at least 15 or more points almost every game of this season. It was embarassing for her, but we kept reinforcing with her that it's not about winning. It's about learning the game, and having a good time. Too bad that things change as kids get older. Especially in sports.

Honestly, I don't think little kids should keep score until they are 10 years old or so. But Little League coaches are often just dumb former jocks whose kids are on the team as the pitchers or QBs, and they act way too serious about that stuff. Parents sometimes act the same.

<!-- template inline -->MINNEAPOLIS -- Tempers flared Sunday at the Metrodome after Minnesota’s final touchdown of a 34-3 playoff victory over Dallas. Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking sprinted toward the Vikings’ sideline, taunting coach Brad Childress and later calling the late score “classless.”

Vikings nose tackle Pat Williams, meanwhile, said Brooking was lucky to escape the Minnesota sideline in one piece.

What did you think of the Vikings' late touchdown Sunday against the Cowboys? Vote

“We don’t care what Keith Brooking says,” Williams said. “He was about to get his ass whupped on our sideline over there. It don’t matter. Nobody said anything when they blew out the Eagles [the past two weeks]. It’s the playoffs. It ain’t no regular-season game. If you lose, you go home. We take no pity on them. Do they expect us to? I don’t care about no Brooking. He can say whatever he wants to say.”

To recap: Ahead 27-3 late in the fourth quarter, Childress left his starters in the game. The Cowboys gave up the ball on downs at their 37-yard line with 5:26 remaining, and the Vikings threw three passes on their ensuing six-play drive. The final one was an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on fourth-and-3 with 1:55 remaining.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said the Vikings ran up the score. Said Brooking: “I thought it was classless. I thought it was B.S. Granted, we get paid to stop them, but we had zero timeouts left. I didn’t think there was any call for that.”

Told of Brooking’s comments, Shiancoe laughed and said: “OK, we apologize. I’m sorry. Better?”

The Vikings certainly didn’t need that score to win the game, and I stand by what I wrote after the game. But do the Cowboys have a right to be upset? Did they run it up the past two weeks on Philadelphia? Don’t forget that Childress and Eagles coach Andy Reid remain close friends.

I've seen the ugly side of little league this year. At least as far as girl's basketball goes. We got a coach for the second time that hadn't learned anything new about the game in the last three years. The coaches volunteer to coach, but you would think that they'd at least learn the basics of the game! This was after coaching my daughter in her first year in the league three years ago. That year they went undefeated. They won every game except the final, "championship" game with some great players. This year they lost every game. A parent overreacted and yelled at the coach after one game. What a mess.

Some parents just overreact. My wife and I try to keep our emotions in check. It's hard. But we do okay with it. We hope our daughter can play under a different coach next year. I think she will since her coach this year got basically removed from the league "for life" due to that argument with a parent.

Okay the more I think about it. The more the conspiracy theory builds. Lets examine.

That's it. The NFL fixed that game to set this up.

Hey Darth Snoopy, how are you handling the Chargers loss? Hopefully better than mfoga. That dude sounds bitter. As happy as I am right now about my Vikings, I'm stunned about the Chargers loss. :monkey4

Hey Bro! :wave

Am I sad that the Chargers lost? Sure. I was hoping for a win yesterday.

Am I bitter? Nope. It's only a game and my Chargers will be back. :D

I do find it funny that all the bandwagon jet fans are now coming out of the woodwork! :lol :lol :lol

Even though I do like Drew Brees...

I'll be rooting for Favre & the Vikings to go all the way! :rock :rock :rock

its all the Chargers bandwagon fans jumping on the Jets wagon.

and ever since my Broncos took a nosedive in the last weeks of the season i thought the Saints and Colts were going to the SB. now im thinking the Jets have a good chance of upsetting the Colts

Y'know, there have been a couple of really peculiar moments in the past where I have wondered if the NFL was trying to fix the Superbowl ("tuck rule," Palomalu's INT against the Colts that wasn't), but think about what you are saying. The Jets? Which sponsor in their right mind wants to see that boring bunch move on? Chargers/Colts had the potential to score 40+ points each. Now, we can probably expect a 17-3 game of some kind. :sleep

Also, is the AFC title game going on Fox? Fox has had the NFC license all year, including the playoffs, so that would seem strange to me.

Are those the same fans that jumped from the Patriots to the Steelers and then Broncos (when they were hot @ 6-0)? :lol :lol :lol

All that jumping must get tiring!

I don't think the jets can beat the Colts but you never know.

Just imagine how hard it was to jump on the various NFC bandwagons. Over the course of the season people went from the Saints to the Vikings (for awhile, everyone said the Vikes were for real and the Saints were not as good as their record) to the Eagles to the Cowboys, and now back to Saints/Vikes :lol

I'm just joking around about it. I was talking about fixing the games to get this AFC championship between the two teams that started this all for a ratings boost before the superbowl which I think is on CBS this year. I was just taking a dig at Fox because it's known for trashy programing and reality tv.

As a Patriot fan I just can't figure who to root for in the AFC title game. There is no lesser of two evils.

I guess though I'd rather deal with insufferable Jets "fans" for the two weeks leading to the Super Bowl and get a good laugh after the Saints or Vikings throttle them.:lol

I heard the Cowboys lost yesterday.

:)

/still savoring.
