Re: 2013 NHL Season
Posted this on hockeysfuture forums and thought you guys may like to see who I have as my potential Calder Candidates for 2013/14. Mostly sleeper picks...
I think saying guys like your MacKinnons, Drouins, Jones, and Barkovs are too easy.
I am not saying these guys will make the cut, some of these may not make the NHL this Fall, but don't be surprised if they do and excel...
Daniel Catenacci - Great two-way forward. High on the offence. Plays much bigger than his size (plays with a chip on his shoulder), and has speed that is Michael Grabner game-breaking speed. Potential steal of the 2011 Draft. It's between him and John Gaudreau. Only time will tell.
Brian Dumoulin - Solid big bodied two-way defenseman with underrated offensive upside. Was a good scoring dman on a weak offensive WBS team. Has had a break-out playoffs with 8 points in his first 12 post season games. Hasn't slowed down despite being used to a shortened College schedule.
Torey Krug - Arguably the Bruins top offensive defenseman since being called up. PP Specialist at the very least. Hasn't shown any signs of slowing down either.
Alex Chiasson - 6 goals in his first 7 NHL games. Only 2 in 7 post season games with Texas, so he could be an Eric Wellwood. Continue to flourish as a full-time NHLer next year or struggle to produce in the A.
Matt Fraser - Best wrist shot (most accurate in any case) for any forward not in the NHL. Has decent wheels. Best goal scorer in the A during his last two seasons.
Ryan Strome - Does he make the leap and supplant Frans Nielsen as the 2C option in Brooklyn or does he need a full season of AHL conditioning/development?
Jacob Trouba - Dominate in every facet of the game. Once considered a reach in the 2012 Draft, may now be looked as the steal of the Draft in the 1st round. I think he could be a game changer, and what the Jets need on the back end. Looked great as a NCAA Freshman. Not surprised he's done.
Jon Merrill - Despite injuries and a suspension has earned the trust of (now ex-coach) Red Berenson again, and looked good despite missing nearly a full NCAA campaign in his last 2 years of College. Was one of the better Baby Devils in Albany's stretch run. Could be fast-tracked to an NHL gig with a big camp.
Xavier Ouellet - I know some may question this pick, but this kid is very mature and owns a great overall skillset/game. How does the captain respond with adversity (the Matteau son and father situation), he responds with a hat trick helping lead his team to victory. That he and looked good in the WJC. Detroit is known for holding back their prospects, but he's my big sleeper pick.
Vincent Trochek - Great skillset and dominated in the OHL. Florida needs scoring and this kid can and will produce. Looked pretty sharp for Team USA. I could see him making some noise.. if he can make it out of camp.
Eddie Lack - If one of Roberto Luongo or Cory Schneider gets traded it gives opportunity for the Stork to show what he has. What he has is a great frame that fills the net (with equipment on (he's quite lean (I love brackets (can't you tell?)))), and possesses a great east-to-west coast game. He is very fast and agile on his feet. Seldom does he get beaten down low. Good focus and confident game. Can come off cocky. Doesn't get rattled by bad goals or bad games. Always comes back strong. Will challenge a shooter by coming out and great at retreating back with little-to-no risk of getting burned. Plays the puck well. Good team player. Looked off and out of sorts this past season in Chicago. Seemed to struggle for whatever reason. The bigger concern now is how he comes back from his hip injury. If he shows up as the 10/11 Eddie Lack, then you have an NHL top 10-15 calibre starter. If he comes back broken, he may never be more than a third string NHL goalie who sees plenty of minor league/Europe duty.
