Re: 2013 NHL Season
If the Pittsburgh Penguins want to win at least one game this series against the Boston Bruins, they need to do exactly what I said from day 1... play disciplined hockey. As an aforementioned poster explained, play with structure. Focus on shutting down their top guys like they have with ours. Make certain guys like Krejci and Horton are covered. Eliminate their scoring chances by cutting down on their scoring and passing lanes. If they can frustrate our top guys, we can frustrate theirs. Also Crosby has to play like the best player in the world. Not be careless... For a guy with so much drive and will to win, he played very carelessly out there. That give-away pass that converted into a Marchand goal was not Sidney-isque at all. I have never seen him play with so much ignorance ... your team usually follows by its leader and best player. When 87 is in the lineup it seems as though the team lives and dies by what he does. Notice when he's not in the games, how the team dynamic changes?
It seems as though the team is watching for what Crosby says or does and goes with the idea he has the answer. I have seen this team play so well without him. Elevate their games to substitute not having the best hockey player in the world in their lineup. I suppose one would get the impression that I am selling him as a bad captain, but playing the way he has in these playoffs is poor captain behaviour. I get that you can't always win, and even the greats of yesteryear, Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr were effected by early playoff exits, but when your team is this close, and has so much depth and is strong in almost every facet of the game, you should not get rattled the way he has, take stupid penalties (here's looking at you Malkin), or make careless plays that change the dynamic of a game. You're not a rookie anymore.
