I'm thinking that video is a bit disingenuous. My guess is that's a launch U versus an April updated U. I highly doubt that's a March updated U versus an April U. I know mine doesn't take that long to get out of a game anymore.

It seems to vary for me between slow as hell and really really really slow. I'm looking forward to this April update...

From Joystiq:

The Wii U system update due next month is being touted as a large one by Nintendo, and here's one of the reasons why. As previously indicated, the update increases the speed of returning from a game to the Wii U menu, but this video shows just how significant that speed boost is.

Going by this video, it'll take almost two thirds less time - from around 23 seconds to just 9 - to exit out of a game and return to the Wii U menu following the update.

While we can't test the update for ourselves just yet, we can and did verify the 'before' video's accuracy with our own side-by-side comparison; our Wii U took the exact same time to exit out of New Super Mario Bros. U. So no, no one sneakily pressed any pause buttons.

Well I'll be damned. Guess I wasn't the only one suspecting.

Did everyone see that ZombiU got updated? Anyone notice any glaring fixes?

I desire Nintendo's signature titles like Zelda and the update to Mario U where we get to play with the green overall plumber finally. Sadly in my opinion Nintendo's current lineup is a flop, and day after day it seems like another Gamecube with many titles being robbed from the Australian market like Walking Dead.

In addition to this the update for me is nothing to get excited about. Nintendo should have released its update to address the systems performances a few weeks after the Wii's launch, whilst the longstanding issues may have deterred people from buying the console, besides the bad marketing and lack of games.

Nevertheless the Playstation 4 launch which I'am eager in seeing being a long time playstation fan, also lacks signature racing titles like Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo even Grand Theft Auto V should have been on the PS4 launch lineup. Even more Microsoft fans seem to be getting shafted with an rumoured always online connection and the rumour of Microsoft opting out playing second hand games.

In summary what i am trying to say here is that in launch history its never been this bad, especially for Nintendo, and this is all but an indication that console gaming environment is changing thanks to the Ios platform and the concept of cloud gaming.

The only thing that's changed from then until now is that we have more tech bloggers today who are eager to write gloom and doom stories for the easy hits to their web sites. Remember, these are the same geniuses who have been saying "Apple is DOOMED!!!!!" for a decade now. How's that working out?

Thing that hurts is lack of big name system selling third party support though.

No Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, etc.

Considering the sales since December, Nintendo has plenty to worry about. And looking at the rest of the year it doesn't seem like it will be getting much better, unless something amazing happens at E3

Well, I believe history is repeating itself within Nintendo...I guess I was wondering if all the Nintendo fans here agreed or not?

I don't see the Wii U taking off the way the Wii did, few consoles ever do, but I do think it's still too early to call it a failure. If it gained as much traction as the Gamecube, that could probably be called a success for Nintendo and Nintendo fans alike.

Third party support on Nintendo consoles has always been weak, but it's a mystery to me as to why that is. Looking at the Gamecube, it had fantastic third party games like Resident Evil 4 (this was a GC exclusive at first), Viewtiful Joe, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, SSX3, Crystal Chronicals. But for some reason, none of these ever sold systems.

The Wii sold like gangbusters and everybody though Nintendo was back as the top dog in gaming, but again, third party software didn't sell.

Something the Wii U has going for it that Nintendo has never seen before is buzz from indie developers. Nintendo has made it incredibly easy to develop for the Wii U, and there is a ton of indie buzz for the Wii U. Personally, I don't think indies will see enough sales on the Wii U to keep the buzz going, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

The only conclusion I can come up with when looking at Nintendo post-SNES is that Nintendo games sell Nintendo systems. Period, the end.

Sorry for taking the long road to get to your answer, but I think these points are kind of important. Is history repeating itself? Yes, definitely. Does this equate to a failure for Nintendo? Probably not. They don't have to be the top selling console to turn a profit, and I think they have enough talented (even legendary) developers at their disposal to make for a good showing on the Wii U.

On a slightly related topic, there is a fantastic article about Nintendo's relationship with EA over the years that was recently written: https://www.notenoughshaders.com/2013/03/25/the-sexual-history-between-nintendo-and-electronic-arts/ The author promises to deliver several more articles detailing the history of Nintendo's third party support. Really interesting stuff, I highly recommend that any fan of the video game industry past or present give it a read.

tl;dr: Yes, history is repeating itself. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Who knows? Who cares? We should be playing video games, not armchair video game industry exec.

Thanks for the thoughts, Kabukiman; while I know I come off as a hater, its really not the case. If I had kids, I know i'd be all over Nintendo...

Only thing to save em for me: Eternal Darkness 2....that's the one game I thought was awesome back in the day

Are you saying there aren't enough games? Yes I'am. This is because i find myself not pocketing my money on the lacklustre Wii U lineup. in fact being new to Nintendo i only have one Wii u title New Super Mario Bros U.

Even more in the last month i got many classic Wii titles like: Donkey country returns, Rayman Origins, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Sonic Colours, and am still craving for more like: Super Paper Mario, and the Zelda series Twilight princess etc . Since I own a PS3 and soon to be PS4, titles like Need for Speed U, Assassin's Creed are not my cup of tea.

My taste buds crave for signature and exclusive titles on the Wii U. I'am in the market for fun games like Rayman Legends, Zelda Wind Waker, the New Mega Man and hopefully in the near future the new Zelda, Mario Kart, Warioware titles etc, you know the games that make Nintendo shine.

I don't own a Wii-U, but I have some questions for you guys with Wii-U's who came from the original Wii console:

- Is the Wii-U eShop the same as the Wii Shop Channel (from the original Wii)? Or is it something different entirely?

- Can you make an online account through Nintendo, such that all of your Wii Shop Channel downloads (like NES games, etc) can be re-downloaded onto the new Wii-U? Something similar to a 'cloud' set-up. Or do you simply transfer the games from the Wii onto an SD card and install them on the Wii-U?

Again, pardon the ignorance. But I know there's plenty of you here that know their stuff. :rock

^ The Wii U eShop is entirely separate from the Wii Shop Channel with completely different offerings. One big difference is that it uses money instead of points.

You can transfer your Wii purchases to the Wii U to play int "Wii Mode" via a data transfer utility. Starting up Wii Mode reboots the Wii U and when it starts up again, it's essentially a Wii, the gamepad cannot be used at all. When you transfer your saves and purchases to the Wii U, they will be removed from your Wii.

When the Wii U Virtual Console fully launches (sometime this spring), you will be able to transfer your Virtual Console purchases from Wii Mode to native Wii U play with Miiverse and gamepad support for $1.00-$1.50 per title. Nintendo says this fee is to cover the cost associated with adding gamepad play. If you don't want to pay that fee, you can still access all your purchases in Wii Mode.

Sega has just confirmed to Kotaku that Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer coming out on Wii U.

We first heard a few months ago that the Wii U version of the disastrous shooter had been "indefinitely postponed," but Sega denied that. Since then, the publisher has refused to comment on this version of Aliens: Colonial Marines. Now it's official.

"We are constantly looking at all areas of our business and in this case have made the decision to not continue development of the Wii U version," a Sega rep told Kotaku. "Rest assured that we have some fantastic developments for Wii U in the pipeline which we will announce at a later date."
