Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

And it's because of studios not believing in the vision of the director that so many movies are ____.

I really don't know what your trying to argue here.
You can't have one without the other.
No financial backing=no movie
No director=no movie

They both need each other.
Studios seem to forget that it's the movies that theytook a chance on are successful and memorable. Does it always pan out no. But the studio recover they always do. And a bad movie does nothing for a director except tarnish their reputation.
If these tight arsed studios don't want to go with a directors vision then don't hire a director get the marketing department to make the movie because their the one that apparently know what's good and what's not

Studio
Producer

Director

Actor

Screenwriters

Grip guy

Fan.

That is how it works. :rotfl

Studios have all the say.

Do you know what independent movies are!?

Those are movies that ARE NOT financed by big, major studios in Hollywood. Those are movies that give writers/directors 100% control. Mel Gibson payed $45 million out of his own pocket to make "The Passion of the Christ". It happens all the time.

I really don't know what your trying to argue here.

If directors want 100% control/say regarding a film then they should go indy and either pay out of their own pocket to make their films or find backers not related to major Hollywood studios.

But as long as directors are willingly taking studio money and aren't taking any risks financially they should STFU.

Pretty simple and straight forward.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Sort of...they are at risk. If the film is a total failure, they can potentially become blacklisted....I think.

I heard this happened before. Lemme look er up.

Your independent film argument is a good point but irrelevant in this situation because even if Ridley wanted to do an independent alien film he couldn't because fox owns the property rights.

No fox no alien films

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Duh. No one can do an Independent film based off copyrighted characters....that's called, a FAN FILM. :lol

Personally I'm happy with a PG-13 rating. I don't watch R rated movies. So I've been quite tired of seeing a bunch of interesting and potentially cool movies receiving an R rating. Plus, I see problems with people subjecting themselves to so much gore, violence, nudity, and profanity.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

I'm fine with waiting for Ridley's eventual director's cut on bluray. I rarely go out to the movies anymore because it's become such a hassle and I hate the crowds.

The problem of bad movies stems from the people who are in charge that have no business being in the movie business. It seems like MOST of those people in charge don't know anything about what makes a movie great, or even have much knowledge about cinema history. All they know is how to run a business, which is valid, sure.

You guys should watch a movie called "The TV Set" starring David Duchovny and written and directed by Jake Kasdan. It's about a TV show writer trying to get a new TV show off the ground and how the studio interferes at every turn. It is brilliant. Sigourney Weaver is fantastic in this as well.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

So were they just saying it wasn't an Alien film to hide the connection/surprise?

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Awesome. Cannot wait for this and The Thing.

It was always like that.

Mostly because this franchise is deader then Amy Winehouse. So to pass it off as something else, and slowly ease into what it actually is, would be a lot more accepting to the general public.

But it's also going to be an original tale set in the Alien universe with some overlapping characters. (Space Jockies)
