Do we really need a Whedonville?

This is the first time I've stepped foot in this section, but just because it doesnt interest me doesn't mean it doesn't have value for those who do frequent this section. What a boring forum this would be if we closed down sections that weren't Marvel, SW, or DC. Variety is the spice of life as they say.

Well said. :D

Isn't Buffy horror, and Firefly aliens and robots? Seems like there are other categories that can handle this. Otherwise, let's have a Stan Lee forum. Perhaps a James Cameron one.

I don't know. Maybe Firefly could go in a Sci Fi forum that covers licenses outside of Star Wars? But, then you're closing one forum to open another.

There's no aliens or robots in Firefly. And Buffy isn't really horror, but if we'd have to define it, yeah, it's horror. But then maybe we could have a sci fi section, devided into tv shows and movies, and same with horror.

That's the challenge of organizing. Too vague versus too specific. Finding the balance.

Now I hope you all don't take this the wrong way, but I am honestly curious what connection a fan feels exists between Buffy and Firefly that would require both be under one category. Look at it from the opposite view. Putting Buffy in a category like Horror, or maybe better, Supernature, means you would see Cabin In The Woods alongside Buffy, alongside Supernatural, etc. Likewise, you'd go to a Sci-Fi forum for Firefly, Dr Who, Farscape, Bladerunner.

When a franchise becomes too big for a category that it overtakes it (Star Wars, for the example with the most staying power), it should have its own forum. Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones were once upon a time that big but now they aren't. When that becomes the case, tidying up may very well require they go back from whence they came.

It really seems a lot of the yes votes to keep Buffy come from a sentimental place, one which I feel, too. But rationally, it is currently a small, small franchise.

Still, I didn't vote, because I haven't made my mind up. It's nice to be able to go to one place where there aren't trollish posts in every thread and the members seem to genuinely want to help each other and have intelligent discussions. But shouldn't that be the case of all forums? If not, there are more serious problems going on that probably should be looked at first.

Darklord Dave, maybe if you started a new poll, with a solution, for example in which each section each Whedon show/movie should go if this board closes(maybe new sub-sections), you'd get more people warmed up to the idea of closing the board down.

I was completely against it at first, but read lots of good suggestions on how to organize the board.

Weren't you the one that just advocated closing the entire board just because you don't like the direction it has gone in?

I know that Protozaius was being sarcastic. He's my son and a bigger Whedon fan you'll never find. We've had discussions about the proposed shutting down of Whedonville and are both opposed to it.

The connection lies in the uniqueness of Joss Whedon's work and its ability to excite special interest and loyalty from fans. For example, does any forum here attract a larger number of the female collectors?

And consider the longevity of our interest. When people love Joss Whedon's oeuvre, it is not like the people who tell you how 'kick ass' Avatar or the Transformers films were, when a year later you could not pay them to watch it again.

Why shouldn't people's feelings count unless this forum is causing actual problems? Has even a single person articulated a compelling reason to close this forum?

If we were the Library of Congress, I would take the remarks about consistent categorisation seriously. This is just a not-for-profit hobby forum and some quirks actual add to its value.

My Whedonville peeps get me. :exactly: :exactly: :exactly:

Why would I of all people ask for the locking of "that stupid Planet of the Apes mega-thread"? Does anyone see my avatar and signature?

And I am a big fan of Joss... however, not that big of a fan that I would venture to the troll-ridden Marvel section to hear any of their reactions to the Avengers film. I like it here just fine.

so looking at the votes, in the course of a week over 160 separate people have ventured into this thread. I would have to say thats a decent amount of traffic.

92 of them saying get rid of it

92 of them are saying we don't need it, there is a difference there. And surely those 92 people didn't simply come in here solely to be spiteful and vote to get rid of this particular section of the forums, which means they must visit it from time to time showing that it does get used and see traffic even if it doesn't get a ton of posts.

Whedonville is a pretty different place compared to the rest of the board. Outside of the star wars custom section you don't see the kind of cooperation and camaraderie that you do here. It would be a shame if SSF lost that.

Boy, I wish there was some way to extract all of the troll votes. :gah: :gah: :gah:

Of course the wording of the poll is a bit misleading as well. Some might cast a "no" vote thinking that they are voting not to get rid of it.

I know I did. :slap :slap :slap

Yeah, they pretty much did. None of them are regulars around here.

I love Whedonville, there's a great group of people in there and we're constantly posting, I don't see a reason to get rid of it.

There's not a lot of posters in the Disneyana forum, should we get rid of that board too?

If you're gonna close this one, Dave, then you might as well close Indy and Diseny too.

You can just start a new forum and call it "Properties people think are wildly popular but aren't"

I have been a member on these boards for 4 years and have visited a great number of different sections on here, but Whedonville is where I have met the nicest people by far. If it wasn't for this section I would never have even known about the possibilities of making custom Firefly figures. I have been graciously helped by many many people in this section, from Old Grandpa, Trevolver, Anzik, and Star Puffs just to name a few. It would be a shame to break up this section. Too many great people here. So, I'm not going to just vote with my heart on this, but also with my wallet. I try to use Affiliate links to order when I see them. If Whedonville is closed, I will have fewer reasons to visit Freaks, thus fewer reasons to buy through here as well. Keep this section open!!!!!!!!
