One of the sweetest, yet saddest stories I seen.

^ Yeah...saddest thing ever put on television.

Seymour is a stray that becomes Fry's dog in the past..and then of course Fry gets frozen and Seymour waits at Panucci's Pizza for Fry to return for 12 years (I think) until he dies. Uhg, so depressing.

But it was beautiful. Loved the song that was played during that episode... it even won an Emmy or Writer's Guild Award.

Beautiful...really? A dog waiting outside for an owner that never shows up and it eventually dies there on the sidewalk? It was a sweet song...but rather depressing. I never saw the episode so I do not know what led to the dog being left alone...but I would have preferred that the owner came back.

Even the episode synopsis in wikipedia is a tear-jerker:

You miss the beauty behind it. :slap

It shows a dog's loyalty, despite the fact Fry believed he lived a rich life (which he did), he still did stuff from my understanding, but constantly went back to the same place waiting for his friend. It's beautiful because Futurama is an adult comedy cartoon that can from time to time deliver thoughtful and heart felt messages. The fact that we're discussing a story that has moved many people and the medium the story comes from is pretty remarkable, and reason why I am a proud supporter of the program.

Despite neglect, dogs are always loyal. My dog is so loyal to me. It was the music, the pacing, the time lapses from past to present day (Futurama 3003)... the way the story unfolded... the entire thing was beautiful in my eyes. Another amazing episode that gets you really thinking is Godfellas.

I get the sweetness of the love a dog has for it's owner...just don't see the beauty in a pet being left behind. :dunno

From the wiki page linked above:

A flashback then shows that in the years that passed after Fry left, Seymour had faithfully obeyed Fry's last command, which was to wait in front of Panucci's Pizza until he returned. Seymour stays there as the years pass and he, the pizzeria, and Mr. Panucci begin to show their age. In the final shot, Seymour lies down and closes his eyes.

Doesn't sound like he was doing much of anything...except waiting. Like I said, I never saw the episode and don't watch the show, so I do not know the circumstances why the dog was left...could have been something that was never intentional....but I still find it depressing! :lol

Watch the episode again. It's not like Fry left him. He got trapped in a chronic stasis machine... freezemagadget dealie-o... and wasn't revived until the year of 3,000. That, and it's a cartoon. But a damn thoughtful one at that!

I edited the aforementioned post. Godfellas is another great episode that gets one thinking.... some of the writing in this show is absolutely stunning. Yes, I can see the beauty behind Futurama's story telling.

And if that isn't good enough for you Jen, then in the words of the great Morbo, "I'LL DESTROY YOU!!!"

Kidding. :peace

I re-edited my post too. So you can read that - I never saw the episode and don't watch the show. I love my little dog so seeing stuff like that makes me sad. :( Even if it is a cartoon.

It was years since I saw it, so the fact that it left such an impact on me is testament to its powerful rendering of a poignant and sad narrative... but yeh, my recollection, or the impression I got, was that the dog just stayed there... in the one spot... waiting... until he died...*sniff.

The dog wasn't abused, so it's okay. Fry's dog Seymour was not harmed in the illustrating run of the episode, and in a later episode was found out to have lived an enriched life. So all is well in Futurama land.

You're making that last part up! I know it! :nono

But in a later episode, you will have been proven wrong. Watch the show in its entirety, rather then a small sampling here and there, and you will see the light.. until then.. *see Morbo quote*

Well I hope you are right. I thought maybe you were just making that up to make me feel better. :lol

I wonder if it was because a lot of people found it hella depressing.

I wonder why the writers came up with that one :lol

I still haven't watched the clip in your thread-starting post Eli. Think I'll do a search for that 'free hugs' vid instead. I'm just not cut out for dying dogs.

It was, which was them being spineless hypno-toads, feeling they had to apease the masses feelings. Jurassic Bark needed no explanation. If a cartoon effects you that much... *see Morbo quote* <---- That's becoming rather addicting. :lol
