This, plus a very well planned move. Revealing this at Famcon and then listing his auction to make it look like MAYBE the people involved at Famcon are to blame. :lecture

That also proves that Q, though not an active member of the forum, is still lurking around in here, and in my thread.

Here's my 2 cents on this thread topic.

This is not about licensing rights to intellectual properties such as movies of TV. It's about art. Even the tops at Sideshow recognized this forum for its celebration of the art of custom figures and customizing existing figures, even their own. They are fully aware of the customs section and that many of their own outside vender artists such as myself and Trevor participate(d) in it. They appreciated it along with us.

If it were a question of legal rights to likenesses, we wouldn't be having this conversation cause there would be no customs section in the ART FORUMS of the board. What's at stake is that the artists who share their art are being ripped off. Gruff hit the nail on the head when he used the word counterfeit. That's the crux of this thread.

We're all celebrating art here in the customs section. Some sculpt, some paint, some tailor, some render in 3D, etc. Recasting a sculptor's art would be like somehow reprinting my paint job on a head. I would lose out on the income from my work while somebody like Q makes a quick buck off my hard work. That's what he's doing to Trevor, Rainman, and others when he sells recast heads. He's making money off of their art. That's wrong.

Now, is it wrong to make art of a licensed property? No. Is it wrong to make copies of that art for sale? An honest answer has to be -- most likely, yes, but it is up to the license holder to decide whether or not they want to act upon it. And some do. Some don't. The Breaking Bad producers embraced it with both arms.

Is it wrong to want a piece of such fine art? No. But pay the artist first. That's the purpose of this thread. And this forum, really.

Amen :clap:lecture:exactly:

This mystery is pretty much solved, I think. Trev knows everything. He'll need some time to decide how to handle it. I do believe our reveal at FAMcon forced an error by Q and his accomplice.
When/if this is determined, please share this information. Dave does not look kindly on people engaging in this kind of behavior.

If it's who we think it is (regarding the Burton sculpt at least), the recaster is not an active member of the forum, but a painter on the industry side that is also good friends with Q.

I would be curious who this painter is. You can PM me if you don't want to make it public yet. Would like to make sure not to use them.

Ive dealt with Q before ordering some boxed figs online. I met him when helping Betto trying to find some material in the LA garment district and guy was cool with me, no attitude hes shown some of the board members. I finally went into his shop and saw the head display and finally realized who Q was. Some crazy stuff!!!!

Thanks for letting us know! I guess I have nothing to worry about because I send my sculpts to known painters on the forum.

So I'm gathering from earlier posts that :
It's not ok to recast, but if you REALLY neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to have Indiana Jones with a smirk its ok to shrink another artists based (and licensed) 1/4 scale sculpt down to a 1/6 scale sculpt
?
or if you REALLY neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed a Trevor Grove Bladerunner sculpt its ok to recast alter the haircut and recast a SST Trevor Indy sculpt since Trev never did a Decker even though a number of other artists offer original Decker sculpts
?

or is it that each of us can make the rules as they suit us ?

That's a shame.

I remember a bunch of drama surrounding Q and a painter of a Predator statue. Same guy??

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever asked Q to stop or confronted him about it? How has he reacted?

I think there are so many potential exceptions and gray areas that this is really the case. I personally don't think shrinking down a 1/4 scale sculpt is any different than "counterfeiting" a 1/6 scale head, unless you also own the original. Same with the modified 1/6 scale heads like the 15% issue previously discussed. But reasonable people can disagree. From the perspective of the board, Dave's opinion (informed in part by the discussion here) lays out the rules that will affect what will be allowed, however. So everyone can believe whatever they choose, but they won't be allowed to violate those criteria here.

As I said earlier in the thread... this is forgery or as some have stated counterfeiting. If it walks like a duck..... well lets call it what it is....saw the Kurt Russel HS on ebay item 230991571309 I reported it as I felt it was the right thing to do.. it even had the painters pics...

I don't think he takes commissions on this board. He's pretty steady with multiple industry producers.

That's a shame.

Maybe. Which Predator statue?

this Q guy recasts items and has been selling for a while. I don't think reporting things to ebay will help unfortunately. I think most of us on the board agree that recasting is wrong and should not be done. However, the outside world, ie ebay, law enforcement etc, couldn't care less. It's the nature of the beast. We as forum members who disagree with recasting can talk all we want to about it on this forum but no one outside of this forum cares. That's why Q will keep on recasting and making money off of an artists hard work. The only ones that know or even care are this wonderful community of customizers, collectors, and artists on the forum. We can only talk among ourselves and help to keep it regulated on the forum. Example, I love Doctor Who. A couple of years ago I bought seasons 1-5 on dvd on Ebay. Then when all the seasons were on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, I went to sell the dvd's to Amazon for a gift card. That sent them back saying they're counterfeit. I contacted ebay and ebay said sorry, buyer beware. Look on ebay now at just Doctor Who season 1-5/6 and see how many are listed. I guarantee 90% are counterfeit. They let it roll and make their money off of seller fees.

I believe it was the Classic Predator statue, just going by the names of the folks involved I just remember Q came into your thread talking smack saying you were talking smack about the painter of one of SS's Preds. Seemed obvious he had his little clique of folks in the hobby/industry.

That would be the suspect.

Same thing happened to me trying to buy the complete Star Trek Next Gen for my wife. We got the money back though.
