And another thing: Can I still get a student discount on a laptop even if I purchase at a retailer?

i vote Mac but i also want to throw in Linux. :D yes, it's a bit of a learning curve but i will honestly say that learning the UNIX operating system has been the single best investment i've ever made while in college. it opened up an avenue of possibilities that have brought me to where i am today. it's widely used in a lot of sectors. business, education, military, entertainment, etc.

OSX is UNIX so no Linux is necessary (but you can run most flavors on your mac as well as OSX, if you choose). =) I was a huge Linux nerd and crapped all over everything that is mac back in the day. When OSX came out, everything changed. Jus so I'm not confusing anybody here, OSX is UNIX, but you don't need to "know" UNIX to use a mac. All the nerdy stuff is so far under the hood you'll never know unless you look. But if you *are* a nerdy type, all those great UNIX tools are there!

What is the difference between a Macbook and a Macbook Pro (in layman's terms)?

Comparing 13" to 13"? Not much, except:

- an SD slot (those camera card things, but they can be used for other things)

- Metal enclosure (really great)

- Keyboard that automatically lights up in the dark

- 4 GB of RAM

- Firewire 800 (this is the dealbreaker for me because I cannot live without Target Disk Mode: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 )

More questions: Is 4GB of memory plenty fast???

On a Mac? Yes.

I don't think so.

I just got a new Toshiba Satellite with the harman/kardon speakers. 4GB Ram 500GB Hard Drive, Core i7 processor....it runs like a dream. :joy

Why can't this thread die. Damn you Chap. 4gb of Ram is plenty on a windows machine too. :D

:exactly::exactly::exactly:

Core i7 is a beast, I believe that's what Tyler and myself run.

UNIX is free, that's the big diff with Mac. :rotfl

FREE > $3000.00

and I'm out.......... no more :pigfly:

Ski, I'm going out to weigh my options right now! :lecture

I will report back. I will expect the might Ski to guide the way. :rock

BUMP!

I almost started a new thread, but didn't feel it was necessary with this thread being fairly new.

I'm getting a new laptop this weekend. I've always been an HP fan, but I'm enticed by the Mac "crowd," excluding the one known as "Eli26."

Money is not my main concern. I don't mind shelling out the extra cash for a reliable product. I've read all of the posts, but I'm still torn. (Ski, please don't kill me for saying that. :lol)

I'd like to see more opinions weigh in with this debate. Is Windows 7 really that big of an improvement over Windows Vista, in terms of security and user-friendly-ness?

I will be making a longer post on the subject in a couple weeks hopefully, but based on recent experiences: Buy a Mac. :lecture

You are the original creator of this beautiful thread. :hi5: :clap

I was going to start one last night, and had the sense to look and saw this magnificent creation.

Can you give us an update on what you got or how you feel at this point? (I saw the "buy a Mac" part, but can you give more details?)

Thanks! :rock

Thanks, Viper. I read earlier you're a PC guy. Any brands that you'd recommend? I really like HP, but I've heard good things about Toshiba as well. What's your feelings on those two?

As far as laptops go, I think Toshiba is a pretty good brand, Dell isn't too bad either. Avoid Alienware like the plague. HP is pretty good though.

Ahhhh! So you wised up huh? Good for you! :rock:clap:yess:

Well the issue is on hold at the moment. My wife does not share my feelings, so I am trying to tactfully urge her in the "right" direction.

I'll give you the update, when all is said and done...

PCs are frustrating where as the Macs user interface and the way it doesn't give you problems is something I adore about them.

Up to you.... yeah Macs are more expensive, but my time and a stressless time on a computer = more than money.
