I just hope POTC 4 loses Jack's buffoonish antics in the sequels. The character was quirky but intelligent in the first film, the clever manipulator playing the fool, but in the sequels he was the fool attempting to play the clever manipulator and that didn't work.

I have to agree. In the first film he was much like the Shakespearan Puck, a trickster using people cleverly to get his way, with a sly smile and a goofyness that always seems to slip away quickly when the camera panned to him. In the sequels especially AWE it was too much Jack Sparrow, he became an exaggeration of himself which is why Teague came off as so much more serious but if you look at the Jack Sparrow in CotBP and Teague in AWE, they are similar IMHO. What I meant on top of it of a straightlaced disappointment was a Non-Pirate, non-whimical straightman for Jack to play off of.

That is freaking awesome. I've always thought it would be cool if celebrities did that at SDCC for whatever movie they are there for. Can you imagine how cool it would have been for Iron Man or the Dark Knight?

Well....RDJ looks just like Tony Stark at SDCCs, he comes in suits with the glasses and the whole ordeal and not in comfort or casual clothing so you could say he does that....I wouldn't expect Iron Man suits or Batsuits on the actors so their other sides are just as good but this has that Depp flair.

It would have been cool to see Heath Ledger show up at a con dressed as the Joker though, even intro him by playing that crazy laugh like when he walks into the mob meeting and have him walk onto the stage all done up, would have been classic. :monkey2

I guess I'm an anomaly, I see Jack as the same guy from Curse through World's End, I don't see any change from Curse to Chest other than showing more of his wacky side for laughs, but I don't perceive it as changing him and showing something that wasn't even there to be shown about him in Curse.

I agree. I think some of what made Jack seem more foolish is because everyone was manipulating and double crossing everyone. Usually he's the one doing all that so he had to keep scrambling to keep up with the ever shifting alliances.

I'm watching the POTC trilogy right now...
though COTBP is very straight forward and a perfect fun flick,
I think it gets too complex for the average movie-goer in DMC and AWE,
BUT amazing IMO, and I just see Sparrow being Sparrow throughout the 3 movies...
I love them!! And I'm really happy they are making a 4th one...
I just hope it goes back to a simpler plot and lots of fun! :rock!

I definitely think the character was changed - they just did what I was afraid they would do, and no longer walk that fine line between quirky/off beat and silly/slapstick.

The entire locker sequence in AWE was so silly and awful. That was not the character I met in Curse. Those sequences would never have been in a movie like Curse of the Black Pearl. The little shoulder Jacks were straight out of a cartoon. The cannibal island sequence and him falling down the steps in DMC... I just cringed so much in the sequels because of what all those scenes did to that character. This unique, quirky character that had so much going on beneath the surface even with all of his little tricks and manipulation and posturing, and they wasted all of that potential with sequels by turning him into the comedic fool.

The little Jacks were out of a cartoon, but I don't see how that changed Jack's character any. That was just a familiar way to show the audience Jack's inner dialogue about what to do.

I took the Davey Jones Locker sequence as just showing how Jack was going mad. :huh

They could have done that in so many different ways without showing Jack eyeing a goat lke he wants to make out with it and Jack laying an egg like a chicken. That was painfully pure slapstick, WTF? garbage, for me.

The only quick sequence of any worth in the locker room scene is when Jack stabs the "weaker" version of himself. There's a moment when something was actually going on with the character, instead of just stupidity.

I'm watch AWE right now and I gotta say Jack did a pretty good job maneuvering the other pirate captains to do what he wanted.

I can't imagine them moving forward with Pirates 4 without Depp, he's either in or it's over. Disney's got to be smart enough to know Jack's the core of what made POTC work. If he's not back, I suggest they wait about 5-10 years before doing another POTC if they want to so that people have time to dissociate Jack and POTC and can accept whatever new characters are thrown at them.

I think this is just mostly speculation. If the script is good, he'll do it. I doubt he will otherwise.

I think him showing up at that Disney convetion dressed up as Jack Sparrow pretty much confirms he will be back. I'm not worried... yet.

Except he was introduced by the guy that just got canned and who played a large part in us getting the Jack we got, and Depp himself is quoted in the article as saying he's not to enthusiastic about it at the moment so something is going to have to go down to fluff Depp up about it.

I can't blame him, Keira and Orlando won't be back, no one but Depp was close to confirmed, (and i could swear long ago it was said he signed a deal for this, guess that report was wrong), Gore's not directing, it almost sounds like this guy at Disney was the last piece from the previous Pirates movies, and apparently who he worked with may have been a factor in his fun and it sounds like all over he'll be working with a new group of folks on POTC 4.

I think Disney will do all they can to get Depp back. Which could be a good thing. Instead of the studios wanting certain things from Jack Sparrow's performance, Depp can do his own thing. More like Pirates 1 I think. I think Disney is smart enough to let Depp do his own thing with Sparrow by now and if that is what it takes to get him back, I'm sure he'll get it. Plus him threatening to leave the project just increased is salary for the role. I'd still really be surprised if Stranger Tides doesn't happen.

My only fear is if they can't get Rush back. I would be perfectly happy with Rush and Depp and an entire new cast. The more from the original (minus Will and Elizabeth) would be fine by me though. Gibbs, Pintel, Regetti, etc would be nice to have back, but not musts. Rush is almost a must.

I don't think anyone will ever dissociate Jack Sparrow from POTC.

Rush I care about, Gibbs would be great, though Jack sailing off alone leaving him at Tortuga leaves open to write the character out of the story, but I thought he was a nice counterpart for Jack. Pintel and Regetti seem like if Barbossa's there they need to be, but it wouldn't be the end if they didn't return.

hmm, strange as I remember the same. Wasn't that supposed to be the biggest contract ever ? In the zillions of dollars range ? :monkey5

Yes, there was definitely an announcement about a deal, and all the armchair politicians around here were declaring that that money should be used to bail out the economy. :lol

I think it turned out to be exaggerated BS but I'm not sure. Whatever they offer him he deserves it, IMO. He can guarantee the asses get into the seats.

This is a non-story until the dust settles. As of now he is obligated pending the finished script. And if he still isn't happy - Disney bought Robin Williams a Picasso to get him back...I'm sure they'll work sometihing out.
