Wonder if the 3D is even worth it, Stranger Tides didn't feel very 3D.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Well I would think the more epic looking scope would help, OST used too many close shots to get the most out of 3D.

Review: Loved it!

It has issues, but it also has the best bit ever in a Pirates movie. You'll know it when you see it.

Maulfan: You'll love it. Lots at sea. Its a big, vast Pirates movies.

Jack looks a bit portly at first, but you get used to him. I was right about the extra belt -- literally holds him in.

Two weird questions but OK. No, Depp's just kind of bloated. And yes.

Thanks.

I was asking because in all the trailers and promo shots he's wearing the coat, which he usually doesn't in previous films. He always gets rid of the coat and hat. He must look very heavy without the coat hiding his figure :lol

Well, I think you're right, because he isn't out of the coat for very long, and the one scene I remember where he isn't wearing the coat is mostly medium and tight shots. Depp's bloated, even over-dressed it shows... and its a bit distracting at first but I got used to it.

Is Davy jones in it?

That alone speaks volumes enough for me. We've had many Pirates conversations and knowing your general outlook on the films after Curse, for you to be able to say this about 5 means I'll probably feel it might be my most favorite yet, since I love them all.

Thank you for a succinct review, tho figured I'd love it bein' a POTC fan. Read a few of the RT reviews *shrug* haven't seen POTC 5 yet but already feels like there's the critics who appreciate the good fun, and the other group who seem to be looking for reasons to be negative.

But overall even the worst of them don't seem to be sayin' it sucks, unlike, you know, Baywatch. Tho for me doesn't matter think I'll pick out my POTC theater today and see if there's a day-early showing.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Yes, please keep in mind it has its faults as I mentioned -- but I don't want to ruin the movie by breaking down the good and the bad. It has both.

But I will say its much better than 4... much more what a Pirates movie is. It has lots of pirate things, lots of laughs, lots of unexplained supernatural stuff (which I know many DON'T like) and lots of silly things. But its got something for everyone and it moves really fast for the most part.

Oh, and everyone should stay for the post-credit bit.

That would be a huge spoiler. I'll say this: it references every previous pirate movie in one way or the other.

Now this concerns me -- I feared expressing my joy for this because I thought I might built expectations too high. Please keep a level head on this one. Don't expect 1 or 2... but be pleased to know it better than 3 or 4. I'd say it sits right in the middle. It's very familiar but refreshed. Really can't expect more for a 5th installment. That's important to keep in mind. Few franchises have gotten this far.

So here's the best example I can use without ruining anything: the first set-piece with Sparrow is big and ridiculous; but the second set-piece is brilliant with the best gag ever!

The movie kind of rocks back and forth like this throughout; a creaky old boat yet still very sea-worthy.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Makes sense. I would agree that Pirates 1 and 2 were on 1 level, 3 and 4 very similar, with 4 ranking slightly lower for having more an adventure story feel than a pirate story, and 3 could easily have been on the level of 1 and 2 if it were simplified, so putting 4 somewhere in between is good to hear, it could easily have continued a downward spiral from 4. Sounds like they found a good directing team, I just think the director for 4 was a wrong choice.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

I feel like the only one who enjoyed At World's End. :lol

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

I enjoyed At World's End (mainly due to the presence of Davy Jones) - but not as much as 1, 2, and 4. IMHO, part of what made the first film great is that all of the plot was personal between the characters (I.E., Jack and Barbossa). 3 is your typical "the whole world's in danger and it's up to us to save the day" cliche. The plot was definitely personal between Jack, Jones, Will, Beckett, etc., but I didn't care for the whole "all of piracy is in danger" subplot.

I like it overall, but the overly complicated plot and how some of the supernatural elements were handle just makes it not live up to Curse or Dead Man's Chest which seemed simpler overall.

The maelstrom fight sequence is one of my most favorite in the whole franchise.
