Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Very eager to hear other's reviews of this. Hoping I wasn't bloated with too much rum when I saw this and that affected my judgment. :D

Pirates 3 was a big disappoint for me. I loved the climax, but the rest of the movie felt stretched out and boring -- and literally "indulgently weird" at times. There was a lot of traveling but very little 'adventure and sword-play' during that travelling. And the Pirates Council went on for what felt like forever.

And Davy Jones became a wimp to Beckett in his opening scene... which I hated.

I liked Chinese fireworks, I like the music travelling in the cold, I liked flipping the boat, I liked Jack escaping Beckett's ship, I liked the sandbar showdown, I liked the maelstrom -- that's about it.

:lol

He's bloated, you'll see. But so is Will Turner a bit. I guess 14 years is a long time.

I took a picture at their Pirates standee and I looked a little bloated myself. I think they did that on purpose.

Orlando Bloom looked pretty old at the premier.

I was watching footage of Depp at D23 in 2015 and he looked pretty thick. Think to remember is even if Depp looks slim right now, they've been shooting this movie since 2015, so it might have been a period of weight gain for him, he looks better now in the premier photos and on talk shows.

I don't care if he weighs 300lbs, as long as he keeps playing Jack the same, that's all I need.

Unless the guy is totally full of crap, there's a detailed description of the post credit scene on YouTube.

Will Turner is freed from captaining the Flying Dutchmen and the scene is he and Elizabeth in bed with glimpses of what looks like Davy Jones haunting over them, alluding to perhaps him coming back.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Haven't ruined on yet, and actually that's the only spoiler I know, information has been scarce for this movie compared to others I have or am following.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Wor, do I dare read Maulfans spoiler or will it ruin the thing I want the most from this film?

Is answering this question going to be a spoiler :lol

Ok. One wink for yess. Two winks for no :lol

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

If what you want most is confirmation do we or don't we see Davy Jones in this film, then read it.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Review: Loved it!

It has issues, but it also has the best bit ever in a Pirates movie. You'll know it when you see it.

Maulfan: You'll love it. Lots at sea. Its a big, vast Pirates movies.

Jack looks a bit portly at first, but you get used to him. I was right about the extra belt -- literally holds him in.

ooooooohhhh Wor's got me cite! :yess:

only thing I wanna know is if there's a classic ship v ship battle like COTBP? One of the best action scenes put on screen IMO.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

I'm curious if the score sounds sufficiently like a Pirates movie score, I don't think Hans Zimmer was involved in any capacity so I'm curious if it stays consistent with what he built.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Man! MF and Wor. You have me so excited to see this now :lol. My expectations are out of whack now though. I aint gonna read that spoiler!

Alright. Must keep expectations in check. Phew.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

I think it looks good- reviews mixed as usual. Don't care~!

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Yes, please keep expectations low!!!!

This is the 5th installment for Christ's sake. :lol

Yes. You must decide if its COTBP worthy though.

Maulfan: I didn't notice any deviation in the music. The directors were masterful at capturing Gore's style... and adding to it quite frankly. As proved by the 4th, directors add so much (or not) to these movies. They are a director's film.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Honestly loved it. Don't understand the hate AT ALL. It's more in line with the first three films... and connects to them!

I liked On Stranger Tides... personally thought it got better with repeat viewings... but I can see why many didn't like it.
DMTNT is a return to form. I'd either rate it #2 or #3 in the series.

And funny as heck... lost count of how many times I laughed.

:lol awesome! :rock

i'm so stoked for this, though between work and moving I don't know if I can see it this weekend.

Just got back, here's my two cents (without giving away any big spoilers):

Plot - It works and it's most certainly entertaining, though I found a lot of it vague and not used to its full potential (I.E., what exactly is the magic in the Devil's Triangle that curses those who enter? How and why is Jack's compass connected to the curse of the Devil's Triangle?). I felt like the beginning of the film was mostly a successful homage to the first film, with the end leaning more towards the elements of AWE (I.E., the final battle was similar to the Maelstrom sequence).

Characters - Javier Bardem was great in the part as Salazar and he had plenty of screen time, although I was surprised by how little his character effected the franchise as a whole. Also, the third trailer pretty much gave away all of his backstory and we only learn about one or two new things about him in the film. I was worried that the whole love story of Carina and Henry would just be a carbon copy of what we had already seen with Will and Elizabeth in the first three films, but really it wasn't. Barbossa has enough screen time as well, although I felt like what they did do with him (which wasn't until about midway through the film) just came out of the blue. As for Jack Sparrow, all I'll say is this: he was a bit more "Jack Sparrow" in this film than he was in OST, and I liked his backstory with Salazar.

At the end of the day, the film is entertaining and I feel that it will ultimately be satisfying for the fans of the franchise such as myself. I'm honestly not sure where I'd rank this on my list of favorite to least favorite POTC films - I'll have to see this again and re-watch all of the others in the series. 7.5/10.
