Just got back and my two cents:

Full disclosure I've always loved all the POTCs...

B+/A-
Not perfect but snark critics IMO who can't appreciate the WORK than went into this wouldn't be invited to any party of mine.
Way better than #4 IMO; not as "tight" or good as #1 but REAL GOOD even great in some parts.

Some parts IMO could have used better lines, maybe a bit more build-up or time lavished on them. A few bits that felt rushed and I was disappointed there:gah:. But overall, for me:

1) No hint IMO of the budget skimping that when on in #4 - if you like details and sets and imagination and WATER it's here.
2) Love JD as Sparrow. Just when I think he's acting the fool too much this *badassery* leaks out...
3) Younger cast appealing. Barden awesome as is Rush.
4) Fresh action w. lots of twists and turns LOL but no bafflement about what's going on.
5) Real nice nods IMO to other POTC films that work well 'coz they flow along and not forced, tying story lines together, but nothing shoehorned in (well, there was one thing I thought was shoehorned in just because but whatever, it didn't suck). Poignant here and there without getting bogged down.
6) Genuinely funny parts LOL Depp can be priceless. There's nothing like Sparrow and watching the film realized how happy I was to see this character again (and some others):love
7) I wanna go see it again, IMO definitely worth 3D and big hi-res screen. IMO kudos to the directors for a lively fun POTC!!!

If this is the last POTC ever made - I'd say it was pretty SATISFYING all around:clap and can't wait to own the BR!!!!

Did it play out that this is the end of the franchise

I'm glad this is getting mostly good feedback here. I think it deserves it.

Be nice if this ended up being the surprise hit of the summer (meaning #1). I think Guardians likely has that locked up for this year.

I'm good with sayin' for me it's probably one of the top 5 summer films. IMO not an easy thing what this film pulls off e.g a kind of easy flow with old and new.

Saw this in Imax tonight. I had a free voucher that was supposed to be used for a ticket to see Suicide Squad last year. But upon closer loook I saw that it could. E redeemed for any imax film and expired at the end of July :lol thanks Suicide Squad! :lol

Anyway. ****in loved it. Definitely better than the last one but doesn't beat out my personal affinity to the Davy Jones centric films. Jack was really bumbling in this one but I think it fits him more as he ages. I'm not tired of Jack Sparrow yet. Johnny Depp still has the charisma and comedic timing to deliver this character. I hope we get at least one more out of him. Bardem was great. A scene stealer for sure...just wish he had more scenes. I felt like he never got a true chance to shine and be bad. The obligatory young lovers of this film were a lot better than the last films obligatory young lovers 100%. I actually enjoyed their screen time.

This film felt lile the true continutation of where At Worlds End left off. Stranger tides felt more like a sidequest.

Final thought will be in spoilers

i can't believe that end credit scene. I never say this...but it blew my mind. I hoped and hoped but never thought they'd bring Davy back. This can't be the last film. They need another film with Davy as the villain again. God damn that Davy Jones Musical cue had me shaking with chills. That scene was my Rogue One Vader scene :lol

All in all a good film. And a good addition to the franchise.

I'm a happy man.

Cool about the IMAX pass. Just IMO a real good film - yeah, well, I like ST, and IMO Depp did his best, but don't think it was the right director and I think there was a shakeup at Disney going on etc.

Still, ST had those mermaids:love:cool: and IMO Rush and Depp together is priceless.

Just because they said it was an end doesn't mean they won't be making a spin off film her and there and if the end credit scene played with the return of Davy Jones , well obviously they have something planned

Oh don't get me wrong. There's definitely things I liked about it. Ian Mcshane was awesome if not similarly underused liked Javier Bardem. But beyond Mcshane and Depp and Rush, the supporting cast was severely lacking.

Absolutely. It's all dependent on Box office at this point. If it flops, it's the "last one" if it does well, there will be another. Please be another

As a big POTC fan, this is currently my #1 film for the whole year and will probably stay that way. :)

*Sourly* IMO if it does poorly it'll be thanks to those critics (which I hope folks ignore) complaining, for instance, that Jack shouldn't be Jack or something like that. I mean, from my POV, Jack is supposed to be this timeless trickster character. He's not supposed to have some uber-serious meltdown or whatever. Jack is Jack. And the audience I saw it with sure seemed to be having a good time, including the completely filled back row.

All I know is, I want to go see it again.:love

Granted this is reading way too much into things, but, I do feel that this movie especially requires accounting for the life of Jack.

When we meet Jack in Curse, he's down on his luck, but I'd say we see him at his best, sharpest, most relaxed, able to really tap into his mind and resources more so.

Within say a year, we find him in Dead Man's chest basically using the Pearl, and perhaps that's why he wanted it back so bad in Curese, to hunt down the tools he needs to survive his bargain with Davy Jones, now more desperate and with a clock ticking against him and relying more on his wit than his cunning.

While they went a little too far with it, At World's End finds him having faced death, surviving it, still trying to avoid it from a seemingly inescapable enemy, and finding his place in the world, that's enough to drive anyone crazy.

On Stranger Tides probably takes place within only a few years or At World's End, and you see him start to be more of a Curse / DMC type Jack, but once he's enslaved under Blackbeard, you get more of the silly, desperate side of Jack because he's not really in control of things.

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, we're seeing Jack somewhere around like 17 years after the events of At World's End, that's a lot of time and countless events to have an impact on him. To expect writers or Depp to play Sparrow like Curse, the version so many hold on a pedistal, doesn't make sense, he's getting older, he's bound to evolve into somewhat more of a goof with old age, think how many old men you may know who start to lose their filters when they speak and aren't as sharp as their youth. Curse Jack is like a 30 year old Sparrow with Dead Men Tell No Tales being like a 50 year old Jack.

It's amazing how Depp is still interested and invested in playing this character. For an actor, usually there becomes a saturation point when they feel that a character can travel so far into a franchise that it becomes a burden in their career.

But maybe he is like Jackman with Wolverine, he loves the role and is fascinated with the development in each future film

But who are we kidding, this is Depp, maybe it's just the inflated paycheck he gets for starring in each of these films :lol

Or maybe it's a character he feels that he can have complete control over

when are you seeing this, Sean?

Despite the positive reviews, I hope you are still keeping that expectation level in check.

Tomorrow, not sure if matinee or at night, going to a concert tonight.

I don't really have expectations, I'm glad the buzz is good, but I even enjoy Stranger Tides so really, as long as this is at least up to that level, I'm good. Downloaded the soundtrack last night and listened on my way in this morning. It's not 100% Hans Zimmer's style, but it's close enough to still feel like a Pirates score and uses Zimmer's themes well. If anything, I have been nervous about that aspect of it, the trailers can give you a sense of the visuals, but rarely use music from the movie itself and I wouldn't want a score to be radically new and take me out of feeling like I'm watching a movie in a series.

You're definitely on point and this movie will add to what you're saying. He's definitely down on his luck in this film. He's basically a drunk (more so than usual) so it even makes sense that he's a little more bloated in this :lol

The soundtrack is good. They use a lot of previously established themes in this. A lot of callbacks to the At Worlds End score as well. Ample use of the pirates theme, but not overdone. In fact I found myself smiling and tapping my foot when it pops up in this film. It's used very well and at the most appropriate times.
