Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

As far as I'm concerned they can make 20 POTC flicks if they return to the quality of COTBP or even DMC. Another AWE and the franchise will live permanently in Davey Jones locker.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I can't imagine Depp or Verbinski being involved unless they could do things as they saw fit, and I would hope Disney is smart enough to realize the success of the POTC series is because the guys behind it know what they're doing and are best left to do things as they see fit for the storytelling.

I'm not sure if it can be said or not that most of Johnny's films are successful to a fair degree or more so, but there are a number that worked out real well for him. He seems particular about what he does get involved with and if he's game for more POTC, then I'm sure the story will go in a direction he supports or he wouldn't be part of the project. I'm sure some of his choices now are a bit ego too though, what's to stop Disney from having a Jack Sparrow adventure without Depp as Sparrow, it'd be dumb but nothing says they wouldn't, so he may step up too just to protect the character's portrayal and maintain as what he's worked so hard to mold it into, which is nice. It always impressed me that Thomas Jane took a stance on how Frank Castle should be portrayed in Punisher films and opted to not be involved if he couldn't make the character as he saw fit, it's nice to see these guys care about the characters and not just the paychecks.

Depp obviously cares deeply for the role listing it as his favorite along with Edward Scissorshand. I just hope he isn't too close to the character and his vision to step back and see what may be best for the film and franchise. I respect what he has accomplished with Jack greatly.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

We probably should by wary of the credit we give to Depp and Verbinski as well. I mean, who knows what their tastes are in regards to pirates. They were both content with AWE, weren't they? Sometimes the creators can disappoint just as much as studios (PT, Matrix, etc).

True enough. However, A) there is some pressure to say that no matter what, it's not too often you hear negative words from creators about their piece until sometime after it comes out, and B) they might say otherwise now that time has passed and they have a different mindset. If you slave over something for an extended period, you're not going to want to see flaw in it because your subconscious is trying to protect you and leave you feeling that sense of accomplishment and success. Now that such time has passed, they may look back and feel there were things to be better and that could be a spark for part 4, to redeem things. Stallone thought he was doing right with Rocky 3-5 and Rambo 2-3, but then he took a break for 20 years, came back and said no, I made the wrong choices, I'm going to revisit these stories and do them right and it really paid off.

I guess that was my point. "Quality" is tough to surmise on paper sometimes, especially with a been-there-done-that concept. I'm sure everyone (Depp, Verbinski, even Disney) wants and hopes to make a great film....it's just not always that easy (obviously) especially for sequels. You try to remain familiar yet be different....it's a tricky mix. Sometimes the familiar feels repetative, and sometimes trying new things backfires.

I've never seen a 4th in the series amount to much, but I have as high hopes as the rest of you.

I pray this and Terminator 4 prove that a 4th sequel can work.

Not a fan of Live Free or Die Harder or RAMBO? I thought both were successful at taking the origins and spinning a new twist on them.

I liked Rambo but didn't care for DH4 too much. But bringing back something from the 80's is a little different than a follow-up sequel only a few years apart.

True, I think it'll be for the best. I think they saw how well the mutli-film shooting paid of for LOTR, but I think Jackson's crew had their ^^^^ together more, plus they set out to do 3, not do 1, succeed, decide to make it a trio and make 2 on the fly. If they think this out and give it time and not rush, I think we'll get another Curse.

Whatever they do, I hope they put Sparrow's darker edge back; he was much more of a scheming trickster in COTBP than he was in the sequels.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

If it is a story about Barbossa and Jack chasing the fountain of Youth, I could see it going that route, but I have a hunch that Jack, as he's defined accross all 3 films, is what Gore and Johnny want him to be. I personally don't see that much a difference, maybe it's my crazy love for the character but to me Jack's Jack no matter the film.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Jack definitely softened throughout the saga but I thought the map swap at the end was a great wink to the audience that the trickster Jack was still in there.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I would think special effects work would make a summer 2009 release too rushed, 2010 or fall/winter 2009 seems more suitable for time to do a good job.

I hope for a summer 2010 release. POTC movies is summer movies. They don't really fit in during the holiday season.

Agreed %100! I want to see clever Jack in the next film, and less buffoon Jack. No falling down steps or other cartoon antics, please.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I'd also like to see Keith Richard as his father again. Maybe more of a part this time.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I dont give Disney any credit on this one :p I watch it totally forgetting it's something from their franchise.

Does anyone know if the cat tail on the left came with Cannibal Jack or the first Jack?
