Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I've been debating whether or not to unload Jack and Davey. I like both figures, but the s scale between the two is annoying and no Barbossa (at least not in the foreseeable future) is a real bummer.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Damn, lost the link, but
THERE IS A 4TH PIRATES MOVIE COMING :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Depp is already onboard, they are expecting the regulars on (so hopefully a barbossa figure will be coming :p) and also, they hinted that because Will and Elizabeth's story was wrapped up, we may not be seeing them (which is a good thing imo, they've had their run, and i want more jack, continuing on with that story would get tiresome imho) but yeah, its for a 2009/10 release i think it was
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Fountain of Youth is the tentative title

I love the fact that they are making another but I felt that the third closed it all of nicely.
Hope there not gonna milk this franchise for cash.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

If he only just signed, then I doubt they're gonna make a Summer 2009 release. If they do, then it's gonna be rushed, and feel like it. Unless of course the have a script, and it's good, and that's why Depp signed back on. But I doubt that; Depp probably has script approval, etc, and it will take a while to lock the script and get everyone else onboard. Plus there's a good chance we'll have an actors strike for a bit which would hold things up.

This sounds like Summer 2010 more likely.

I'm a little concerned about that too, but maybe it will be the beginning of a new trilogy. I mean, Will Turner's story is done, so at best he's a cameo "rescue" or something. Keira has time to play, but without a romantic angle, she's kind of useless. They would need a new, open romance entanglement for Sparrow or for Sparrow to complicate.

I would think a romance for Sparrow would be good because it would force him to make a choice in life at long last. If he was in love, he couldn't be chasing the horizon anymore. It would force him into dramatic decisions. Plus it's a great character for an actress -- a female to challenge Sparrow. Especially if that female is the daughter of someone who Sparrow has a troubled past with; like the daughter of Blackbeard or something.

I would think special effects work would make a summer 2009 release too rushed, 2010 or fall/winter 2009 seems more suitable for time to do a good job.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Depp said he loved the character and would do anything that included Captain Jack so a script may not even be drafted yet, probably a general outline. Verbinski said he'd only return if they really had a story to tell so something serious is brewing. I wouldn't expect this film until 2010 in all reality but I wouldn't be surprised if we got multiples shot at the same time as they did with DMC/AWE.

Nothing wrong with that at all, IF and only IF they have the script finished before they start production on any of them. That's where the issues came in the series, the fact that they were finishing it as they went. They should plan a few, iron it all out on paper then go to production.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

They have to be smarter with the promotion of the whole thing, you knew Jack lived after DMC, you knew Barbossa was in AWE because of all of the press they had Rush do, none of the cliffhangers where in fact cliffhangers.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I'm not sure that Disney may feel that 'Pirates' could support another trilogy. They may script an overall story that could be another two-three films, but I would think they'd shoot one (the 4th) first and see how it does before committing to more.

A lot of things are gonna change by 2010. Particularly the mood of the country.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Pirates is one of the best selling licenses that Disney currently owns being rivaled by only Hannah Montana and High School Musical. With Miley showing signs she is ready to depart and the High School Musical cast all saying that the film is the end for them, Disney will gladly sign on for as many Pirate films as Verbinski and Depp will give them. Hell, they are already looking to replace the HSM cast with a new "Freshman" group that will be able to take audiences through another set of High School sing-a-longs.

Good points. I certainly hope at least that the writers plan for multiple films, but if their stories are meant to intertwine, A) all the connections are ironed out up front, and B) each story is done such that it can exist by itself or as part of a whole so if they only greenlight 1 and the story was meant to be 3, it doesn't suck cuz you never get the rest of it.

That doesn't mean the audience will come. Nor does it mean the film will be good. There's plenty of examples of franchises that were killed by the rush to cash in.

And Disney, like everyone else, has a track record of rushing to cash in until the thing is dead.

One can only hope that Depp and Verbinski will hold off until it's right. But lots of things look good on paper that don't work so well on-screen.

I agree. Disney has always been smart enough to know when to pull the plug and not overexpose. Otherwise you'd see a Bug's Life2, Monster's Inc.2, Toy Story3, etc. Milking POTC into a mediocrity isn't in their best interest. Do one more if they must, and then move on.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Of course not, but my point is the same as you just posted. Disney will push for as many films as they can get out of this franchise, they are still making animated straight to DVD sequels practically undoing what was done in the film itself just to cash in. This will be no different. What I'm hoping for is that Verbinski/Depp will stay true to the character and the ideas but before Pirates 4 was announced the next move rumored where animated sequels.

Bug's Life and Monsters Inc were not proven money makers for Disney/Pixar. What you will see in the next 5 years is Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and there are rumors that they are trying to find a vehicle to capture the Nemo audience again. Disney is smart company but they squeeze every last dime out of a property they can. Look at Aladdin and the Little Mermaid, both moneymaking franchises that were nearly destroyed by the continous going to the well, they are starting to latch onto their older classics as well starting with Cinderella. Don't give Disney too much credit.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Don't give Disney too much credit.

We probably should by wary of the credit we give to Depp and Verbinski as well. I mean, who knows what their tastes are in regards to pirates. They were both content with AWE, weren't they? Sometimes the creators can disappoint just as much as studios (PT, Matrix, etc).

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I can't imagine Depp or Verbinski being involved unless they could do things as they saw fit, and I would hope Disney is smart enough to realize the success of the POTC series is because the guys behind it know what they're doing and are best left to do things as they see fit for the storytelling.

I'm not sure if it can be said or not that most of Johnny's films are successful to a fair degree or more so, but there are a number that worked out real well for him. He seems particular about what he does get involved with and if he's game for more POTC, then I'm sure the story will go in a direction he supports or he wouldn't be part of the project. I'm sure some of his choices now are a bit ego too though, what's to stop Disney from having a Jack Sparrow adventure without Depp as Sparrow, it'd be dumb but nothing says they wouldn't, so he may step up too just to protect the character's portrayal and maintain as what he's worked so hard to mold it into, which is nice. It always impressed me that Thomas Jane took a stance on how Frank Castle should be portrayed in Punisher films and opted to not be involved if he couldn't make the character as he saw fit, it's nice to see these guys care about the characters and not just the paychecks.
