I like that scene too. I wish the original opening that was filmed (but effects never completed) would turn up eventually - where the three witness the Earth explode.

Are those the same chairs that they used for the TV series astronaut ship? They look very different from Taylor's seats on his spaceship.

You make good, logical points. I hadn't even thought about Taylor suddenly having dog tags again. It can be hard to reconcile many things. I do think Roddy McDowall summed it up best, though, by saying that you have to forget the inconsistencies and watch each film as it's own entity in the series and decide if it's a good film on its own. I love "Escape" even though there is no way that Cornelius, Zira, and Milo could somehow drag Taylor's spaceship out of the ocean, repair it, and learn to fly. However, it's still my favorite sequel. And using Roddy's advice it works.

I totally agree with you. Each film has it's own strengths. I just get my feathers ruffled a bit when people try and re-write or re-evaluate the facts of the first film to construct a cohesive narrative from all five films... let alone adding the TV show. :horror

It can't be done.

But each film can be enjoyed for it own sake.

Yeah, Roddy was one wise ape. He shoud have been an orangutan. :D

He was too thin. He didn't have the right body mass. :D

I was never a real fan of ESCAPE because of this ship repair thing but I do love the visual of the three on the beach in the astrosuits.

Of all of the pills that Paul Dehn (screenwriter) asked us to swallow, that was by far the hardest.

And yeah even though it doesn't make a lick of sense, the image of the three apes taking off the helmets had a huge impact on me when I was 8 in a darkened movie theater.... and it is something that has always stayed with me. The scene is perfectly punched up by Jerry Goldsmith, who wrote the film score of the first film.

Speaking of Escape, it is funny that the film asserts that it's Taylor's ship that the chimps used to travel... however it's way too small to be Taylor's ship and the whole hatch opening (the hatch that was blown in the first film for the astronauts to escape) and sensor pole are missing from the spaceship altogether.

Oooops! :horror:horror:horror

I kid... Roddy was the quintessential chimp. Nuff said.

And for me growing up, Roddy was the central reason I enjoyed these films. And like you Jess, there are those times that I simply need to hear Roddy's voice again... because it taps into something really base in me that is comforting.:D

Yeah, I think the beginning of ESCAPE is by far the best part. Doesn't someone have that original ship (from the first movie) displayed in their backyard? I seem to remember reading about it awhile back. I would love to see Sideshow produce a scale model of that; maybe a diorama with it sinking into Lake Powell!

And speaking of Lake Powell, does anyone know where the opening scenes were specifically filmed? I was down there a couple years back and asked the Museum guide if she knew and she gave me general directions but it's a vast area and it looks like they filmed in a lot of areas. They used to display the big, fake, falling rock in the museum but she told me it was in storage at the time I was down there. One of these days I hope to see it and then tour the canyons and do a "then and now" comparison as I did when I went to Amity Island (Martha's Vineyard) a decade ago.

You guys have probably seen this photo before, but it's the front view of the three of the ape-o-nauts.

Hello BB, I think there was a huge shing ding there last year or the year before. They were giving tours to celebrate the upcoming anniversary I think. PZ would know more on this though, he's our city's scribe. :)

Regarding those pictures, I wonder if they would have helped Snickertown while he was working on his new Icarus Spacecraft. I wonder how that came out. I would love to see some pics or that beauty. His Apes were very cool looking with the rooted hair. I wonder what he thinks of the new HT apes, and if he's even seen them. Where did he go? Hmmm, hopefully he got his computer fixed and still lurks about like our friend JJ Jungle Jom.

Damn, I wasn't aware of any celebration. I would have like to have gone to that! :banghead

Am I the only one here who loves the hell out of CONQUEST? Particularly the uncut version.

I really like the uncut version. It's much more bleak as that chapter should be. I also like that the other apes still could not speak yet. Adding Lisa's "nnn noooo" rather jumped the gun. I suppose for the family audience, though, a happier ending was needed. I did like how in Conquest everything ties back to Cornelius and Zira - in a way they created the Planet of the Apes. Didn't Armando actually mouth the name Milo in the beginning, but it was dubbed "Ceaser" so as not to confuse the audience?

I've not seen that photo before. Great find! I have been looking for my childhood copy of the Escape novelization to see if they opened it with the chimps in space as well.

being an apes fan and a stickler for consistencies is comparable to Dr. Zaius being the Minister of Science and Chief Defender of the Faith...
I drive my wife nuts with the inconsistencies of almost every show/film we watch that has them. Somehow though, the apes films escape that scrutiny. I just love to watch them.

With todays technology we might one day see it. Look how they've redone the Trek tv series effects.

Conquest was never my fave of t5he series, though I must admit to likingthe uncut version much more than the originally released version.

Fow Movie Channel played it throughout the Thanksgiving weekend. Best weekend ever!!

That was one great apefest, wasn't it? My husband was turning the tv channels around one night and accidentally found Planet of the Apes replaying on the Fox Movie Channel. He said he was shocked that they actually have it on. I asked him why he didn't tell me it was on...I would have liked to have watched it. Can you believe that?

One thing that's always bugged me about Conquest was it was supposed to be the future...yet they are still using kerosene. For what? Two gallons of kerosene? Why?????? I've never bought any kerosene. Do people really buy that stuff?

I love Caesar's rage at the end when he wants to pummel the guy but he ends up saying, "Take him"

They are the exact same chairs used in the TV series. The control panel behind the seats and the ones on the side of the ship are used in the TV series also. The TV series must have used the set they built for Escape and never used in the final cut of the film.

I still use it in the small kerosene heaters I use to heat up my garage.:wacky
