My wife bought me a blu-ray player for Christmas knowing that the Planet of the Apes blu-ray's contained some extra footage. Funny thing is... I had recorded the uncut version of CONQUEST on DVD during the Thanksgiving POTA weekend. Now, I don't want to shell out the extra $$$ for the POTA Blu-rays.

Maybe you can split it with Dave Ballard. He's interested only in the book, not the Blu-Ray, as the ones for the US won't play on his system.

Are you serious? I thought that the Blu-Ray was supposed to have the uncut Conquest, or extended version. Not that I have a Blu-Ray player, mind you...but SOMEDAY, perhaps.

I was told it wasn't, but I may have been misinformed. This might be worth a Netflix rental to find out for sure.

What the hell happened to continuity!
10 years after Beneath, wasn't the planet dead at the end of Beneath? Zaius was at ground zero and he's fine, but they did stick to continuity having Cornelius and Zira gone as in the Escape movie. And the first thing I see is a chimp kid playing with a dog, wtf, weren't Dogs and Cats supposed to be extinct in Conquest long before this series takes place? Also why the hell are all the humans able to speak all of a sudden and able to assemble complex clothing with dyes and so well groomed? And there's not a single female Orangutan or Gorilla to be seen, and just two female chimps shown, where the hell are all the female Apes?

The TV series was a piece of sh^^t. I'm glad Sideshow skipped it, and I hope Hot Toys does it too.

That is my opinion. I know there has been alot of discussion about this in the POTA Yahoo group in the past, but I think that Zira and Cornelius arrival changed the future. Hince that is why Aldo isn't the first Ape to say "No" and Caesar is the one that kicks butt! instead.

Another good point... I believe Zira and Cornelius made an impact. They changed lanes. The car in lane "a" crashed while the car in lane "b" moved on! [aka: the butterfly effect]

Speaking of Aldo, have you guys ever read the book of Conquest of the POTA?

In the book, at the time when Caesar yells “Lousy human bastards!” Aldo is the one being beat upon at the foot of the stairs by the police. (Not some unknown chimp as seen in the movie.)

Aldo goes "bananas" swinging the huge chain and inflicting injury on his human captors before they can take him down!

But the switch is a mistake in my opinion.

In the first film, according to the cave scene at the end of the film, apes arose from an alternative evolutionary path... spanning centuries after the destruction of the Earth by man. Cornelius describes an era of caveman like-carnivorous gorillas. Humans that grow from this evolutionary path stay beasts... both primal and mute. So the treatment of humans by civilized apes is understandable. It is not oppression the apes practice... no bigotry involved here but animal control. Humans are hunted because they are destroying the ape crops. In the first film, the apes are not the bad guys... and Zaius is trying to keep his people innocent and pure. Like dinosaurs and cavemn before them, intelligent Humans and Civilzed Apes do not share a common place in time... they are separated by centuries.

But the successive films change that path. Escape introduces the new idea (through that insanely improbable time travel plot twist) both intelligent human and apes will share a common time. This sets up an unfortunate scenerio where one group MUST oppress the other to create drama. First it is the human who become demonized in Conquest... creating a race of people deserving conquest.

But by the TV series, Apes are now the demons. Reduced to simplistic terms, the apes are now the oppressor... waging bigotry against humans that have capability of speech and are clearly intelligent.

Something is lost in this translation in my opinion.

Excellent point - as has been pointed out in other threads - the Ape franchise isn't about artistic vision, but about adding credits to the coffers. Just from a practical reason and on a TV budget, they needed to have multiple main characters and guest stars that didn't need hours of makeup to shoot. I'd imagine that was the real reason for the change.
