I'm just seeing the attempt to get rid of him as an overreaction. That's all. I don't like the dude one bit. That's why I stopped watching him. The moment I stopped watching him, he stopped being annoying. He stopped saying things that bothered me and he stopped playing games poorly. Problem solved. Taking money away from him to make my life even a tiny bit less annoying seems petty to me. That's just the way I see it. Many disagree and I get that. I'm guessing it's just a vocal minority. The complainers are always louder than the ones who are content. He's got hundreds of thousands of subs. He must be doing something for those people or they wouldn't be subbed.

Well, the word on YouTube is that he has been bleeding subscribers for a while now, and his videos aren't getting as many views anymore. Less views means less income, so, by just refusing to watch his videos, you're already taking money away from him :lol.

Probably so. He's certainly a hard person to like, but the people who do, really seem to like the guy. Why, I couldn't tell you, but there it is.

Yeah, that always baffled me. You mentioned before that he was actually good at gaming at one point in time. Maybe those folks are from his old fan base or something.

He was good at fighting games. That was all he played before he started doing this for a living.

Zing! Anyway, subs tend to ebb and flow like most things. I think the reason his views are down is mostly because of the sheer amount of content he uploads. That was another reason I unsubbed. He does playthroughs of virtually every game that comes out. Each one broken up into dozens, sometimes hundreds of 10 minute videos. Your homepage gets bombarded with playthrough vids from him every day. I tended to watch the first couple parts and the last couple of any given game. To see what the game was like and whether or not he was enjoying it. I never gave him a lot of views I guess. I used him to evaluate games. That was about it.

The amount of views individual vids gets may be down, but he uploads at least four or five times as many vids as he use to. It probably averages out to be more views than before, not less.

Lots of people get huge salaries for sitting on their a$$es in offices across the world. They probably spend half of their day browsing the net and accomplishing virtually nothing. I dont see what he does as any worse than those guys. What about people that review games for a living? Should they get a "real" job too? Movie critics? Painters and other artists? I'm sensing some sour grapes in this joint.

Anybody here could record their tv with a camera, suck at a game and talk crap for 100x 10 minute episodes. I did myself consider actually setting up a let's play/toy review/custom figure tips channel with another board member. Not for monetary gain, but just because i want to give back. I still might do it yet. I love toys, i game lots and i make customs alot. I feel if i make that channel and if it did become popular id be doing the community a service in being helpful, and not just ranting over games

Most people could, but most dont. Many do try, but Phil's managed to get a pretty impressive following which isnt as easy as it seems. There's a ton of people doing the same type of thing he does and failing to get an audience. Lots of competition.

Entertainment doesnt have to serve a purpose to be enjoyed. The act of enjoying something is service enough. If his subs are enjoying what he does, then he's doing his job and deserves to get paid for it. You dont have to like him or his product to understand that. Is that the sticking point? That he makes money doing this? If he got nothing for these, would people stop the lynching?

I started watching him before it was his job. He had a regular 9 to 5 and got laid off like a lot of people with the recession. He decided to give this a shot full time and see what happens. He's made it work. He has no charm, charisma, talent or natural likability, but he's made a living with it anyway. That doesnt happen by accident. He's put the time and energy into it to make that happen. He's not for everyone...in fact, he's probably only for a small percentage of gamers out there, but thats enough for him. Everyone else can just ignore him.

Man, I never thought I'd spend time debating the finer merits of Phil, the goofy gamer guy on youtube.

It boggles the mind how this guy even has managed to acquire so many YouTube subscribers. I'm sure that his Machinima partnership had something to do with it - where they helped him to advertise and get his name out there.

Plus, it's often the case that people subscribe to things on YouTube and forget about them completely. DSP's current videos are struggling to gain popularity, and practically all of his new ones have less than 300 views each :lol. He's falling out of relevance and people are constantly fed up with his BS.

Going back on topic to this thread, his MGS playthoughs could have been a fresh start, to reintroduce himself to a new audience. But, instead, he makes fun of the games, berates everyone for criticizing him - effectively alienating himself from an entire fan base of gamers.

He could have even shrugged it off with a self-inflicting joke in the "response" video that he made. But, nope. Everyone else is wrong and he is right.

I don't like to see anyone fail at anything. But, DSP has brought all of this on himself. You can't really blame people for reacting to him the way they did.

Actually, his partnership with Machinima was because of his sub count, not caused by it. Believe it or not, he had a huge fanbase going into that arrangement. I was subbed at the time and remember thinking that it was unnecessary for him to do it, but understood why he did.

I dont know how you could forget about Phil. He uploads so many videos, it'd be impossible to not notice.

Youtube has a count glitch with views. It sometimes hangs up at 301 and takes days to correct. I'm not even sure if it does correct properly. Then again, he may actually get less than 300 views on certain videos, but I'm guessing it's stuff like "part 87 of Ni No Kuni playthrough"

Well, as you've observed, his style is to be a tool and make bad jokes. He was just being himself on the MGS playthrough and I think thats the best way to do things ultimately. At least it wasnt false advertising hehe.

Yeah, going after people is moronic, but is perfectly in character with Phil. He IS a moron...

I guess I am judging people for reacting the way they have. I'd want hem to show some maturity (something Phil struggles with)and walk away from him. Instead, they're actively trying to hurt him. Lame.

You actually expect people on YouTube - and let alone, other YouTube personalities to just "walk away" when someone like DSP is actively insulting them? :lol That's not how the world (or let alone, the Internet) works, my friend. Although it might not be the wisest course of action to give more attention to idiots like DSP, people do have the tendency of collectively striking back against bullies.

I've seen some statistics videos (don't have the links at the moment, but you can search for them), where there was a steady decline in his viewership throughout this year. He even uploaded a video a few weeks ago on his channel, where he was complaining that he wasn't getting more than 300 views for many of his recent videos. So, people have already started to walk away. I think they just needed to vent their anger on him for a while, just to show that they're not going to take such things sitting down.

No, I dont expect it. People are behaving like they always do. He's acting like an idiot to idiots that are trolling him. He should be smarter, but he's not. Whether or not that deserves a loss of income is a matter of perspective.

You sure seem to know alot about this stuff. Is he a pet hobby? Statistics videos? People hate him enough to make statistical analysis and tracking of his numbers? :cuckoo: I wonder how much time that took. Maybe he's a genius after all. Look at how much time and energy people have put into thinking about him. These people who hate on him and analyze him are no doubt subbed to him. They've all probably given him countless views and even more subs from all the people wanting to see what all the fuss is about. It's brilliant...I'm sure none of that is intentional, but it's accidentally ingenious.

If it's really upsetting to you, I'd suggest you take some of your own advice to heart and "walk away" from people who are critical of DSP :dunno. He insults people, and people insult him back. That might not change for a while.

As to whether this is my "pet hobby", I'm not subscribed to the dude. But, parody videos of him (and whatever else) do pop up on my YouTube feed and I watch them because it's hilarious to see where all of this is going. I'm sure it's the same with other people too. Let's not forget that he became a hot topic on the Internet after his infamous MGS runs. In retrospect, the main reason for why I even created this thread, was because I've never seen anyone play the MGS games so horribly. To this day, I still find it laughable that he wasn't doing it on purpose :lol.

Do you honestly get the impression that this conversation upsets me or are you just having a laugh? If youve been reading my posts, you'll know that Ive been as critical of Phil as anyone. I just don't think that a lynching is called for. You're right of course and I agreed before that my opinion means squat and people will break out the torches. I know my position is the minority of what you can expect on a site like YouTube. Walking away would be a rational response and that's too much to ask of anonymous people.

Was the MGS videos the only thing he's known for? He's had a number of playthroughs that got him a lot of attention. I remember the uproar from his Black Mesa playthrough when he had the nerve to be new to Half-Life. Sacrilegious. I was subbed at the time and he did a video thanking the haters for all the extra views. Playing poorly was always a big money maker for him. He might even do it on purpose..who knows. People can't stand watching their beloved games being treated so badly. That, I don't get. Not liking him as a person for being a tool I get but the hatred people have for him because of how he plays a game or the stupid jokes he makes about them doesn't make sense to me. I think some people get too emotionally attached to games sometimes.

Actually, yes :lol. You asked blankly if this was my "pet hobby" to seek out things about DSP, and it seemed like a pretty defensive remark.

In any case, it's not the bad playthoughs that have people "hating" on him. I'm sure a lot of folks watched his MGS runs (amongst other things) and had a good laugh. It's just the utter vitriol that comes out from his response videos that have people up in arms. From the way I see it, he's the one who constantly throws kindling into the fire, and then foolishly complains about why things are getting so out-of-hand. If he wants the hatred against him to stop, he can do the proactive thing and stop hating people.

It's always been a bit of both I think. Before he became so vocal about his opinions and started pissing people off with his rants, he was just posting the playthroughs. Those definitely made people hate him. I remember seeing it back then. Comments were sometimes genuinely negative toward him simply because he wasn't good at the game. They wanted him to "play the game right, d@mn it!" Yeah, he complained constantly as he played, but that's always been the case. I complain a lot too when I play. Can't help it. It's a reflex response to frustration. I don't upload videos of it, but I can relate anyway.

I guess my point is that there's always been people who hated him. He's just not a very likable person and that was evident even before he became the super nutty guy he is today...back when he just played games. I'm sure he's always been the way he is. He's just been much more vocal about his thoughts and opinions in recent years. He use to be a lot more upbeat and positive with his playthroughs and didn't do as many opinionated rants before.

Well, you've know about him for much longer than I have, and I've read from other comments too, that he was a nicer guy back in the day. But, I'd think that having a popular YouTube channel for several years would enable someone to grow a thicker skin to criticisms. If he's going to fan the flames, then he shouldn't complain about why it's getting so hot. Internet people take their keyboard warring seriously :lol.

I think snappahead has a soft spot :monkey1

Look, how i see it is the dude was a good gamer once maybe and amassed a following then, now he's not and should move on with his life instead of crying about people calling him out on his childish ways and actions on the internet of all places.

The guys been doing it for long enough that he should know how the game works, he's just upset that he isn't the 'king' anymore and is basically spitting his dummy out because people are saying he's rubbish (which he made videos clearly showing it, if your going to make walkthroughs on line for a living then you should make sure all your walkthroughs are good imo) Not to mention the retaliation to some people comments and the obvious offence some people have taken to these. If your going to put yourself out there and do it as a 'job' then a level of professionalism is a must or you will get slammed. No question

he's almost a middle aged man and doesn't want to have to go out and do something else with his life. Even though he should because it's obvious his Internet gaming fame is coming to an end and he's very sore about this.

People being people hate, it comes with doing any format of anything on the internet that is unavoidable and always will be so arguing saying i don't know why people hate on him is a silly point to make in general.

Theres a difference between having a soft spot and just not being a hater.

Why should he move on? Hes doing what he loves to do. It may not show cause he's a$$hat, but I'm certain it's true. This perception that he needs to get a "real job" is funny to me. I doubt people would be saying that if he was more likable and popular. I have a bunch of people i watch who do YouTube videos for a living and no ones saying that to them.

I believe he's 29 or 30. That close to middle age now? Man, I'm getting old fast.

I DO know why people hate him.
