I didn't think the first one was very good and I got pretty bored by it, but the second one was really cool, and the acting was a lot better. It was also better paced and had a lot more depth to the characters. Watch the first one just to get to the second one.

I had the directly opposite reaction from Captain Faramir. Loved the first one and thought it was great fun. Halfway through the second one I just had enough and went home. Bought the DVD for my grandson and cannot even get through that the entire way. Please do not give me any fancy explainations but the guy with the snakes or whatever in his face simply looked stupid beyond belief.

My favorite thing about the second film was all the different story lines they had going on. It may seem hard to pull off 150 different stories in a 150 minute movie, but they pulled it off. Even his *****ing hat had it's own story. :pow

Alright gideon, that sounds like something my father(who is 75 yrs old) would say. Give it up buddy, how old are you? :D

Cool stuff Dusty! Perhaps you could encourage the kind folks of SideShow to put together a little something something, like a statue or 1/6 figure or two pertaining to the ShawShank Redemption.

As for LOTRfan, happy early 6,000th post!

Oh Yeah !!! :rock :rock
This would be awesome !

The only reason POTC made it to a trilogy is because of Depp. Look at the other theme-ride based movie called "The Haunted Mansion" to see what didn't work. Given that, I believe long after POTC has shown, people will still associate Depp as Sparrow, just as people have associated Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator. Depp simply is POTC.

There are some reviews about the movie trickling in now (head over to aintitcoolnews.com if you want to spoil your viewing). As for me, it's all about escapism and a good entertaining popcorn flick. Everything about this is light-hearted and fun. Compare that to the doom-and-gloom trend that the Harry potter movies are headed.

I am 57 years old. I have been watching films for over 50 years and have seen thousands of them. I have taught classes in high school in film appreciation. And I was even blessed enough to think up an idea that was developed into a book and optioned as a film by a major studio. It was never made but I did get a check for the option.

So I do know a little tiny bit about films and have seen more than my share. Of course, perhaps my advanced and elderly age excludes me from any discussion about "whats happening now".

Regardless of your admirable credentials, it's a bit rash to brush off a character as being stupid simply because he does not appeal to your tastes. I found him to be rather wonderfully created and well-detailed, but even if I did not I wouldn't assail the character as "stupid beyond belief," especially considering there are many other films that are much more deserving of such a title. Everybody's opinion is different, but to pass such a decisive ultimatum on something is a bit reactionary. I think it was a fine movie, but we all have different tastes, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm glad lots of people liked the first one, otherwise I would never have been able to enjoy the second!

There's a good side to everything.

I am not passing any judgment on the taste of anyone. I simply found that one character to be ridiculous in appearance. I am sure that there are some things that would appeal to me that others would find the opposite.

I think PotC will stand the test of time just as SW or Indy has. And it owes it all to Depp. The studio (Disney) almost fired him after the first dailies because they thought he was actually drunk while filming.

The franchise is the perfect example of something that shouldn't work but comes out firing on all guns.

A big studio movie based on a Disneyland theme park ride? That's just stupid!

But the director, the writers and Depp made the kind of movie magic that doesn't come around very often.

Totally agee with you Dave!

I was talking about films (and even books to an extent).

The Star Wars fanbase and LOTR fanbase (and even Star Trek) fanbase are big ones that have been around for years...even decades. I can't really put the new Pirates fanbase in the same category right now...sorry.

Perhaps this pirate fandom will be around for a long time to come, only time will tell. But I notice that many fandoms can be fickle. Hordes of folks jump from one fandom to another to be part of the 'in' thing and once nothing new is around (film wise) they jump ship. I guess I just see many (not all mind you) of the pirate fanbase doing much of the same thing. I can't blame them of course...it makes sense to jump into new that interests you. I've just always been fascinated to see what the new 'in' film or film franchise that attracts a rather large fanbase.

Hmm Ok I really like the first Matrix alot it had nothing to do with it being a fad. I was over in the middle east when it came out, no idea what it was about just heard it was good went and saw and loved it.
NOW I was all hyped up about the second one, and that really let me down. So I guess I kind of lost some fandom for it but it had nothing to do with it being a fad, just taste.

I wasn't lumping every single person who enjoys a certain fandom or film, book, etc...as one who is only apart of it because it's a fad. Of course there are those who will stick with it or at least come away liking a film, book, what have you. But there are lots of fans (I've seen/met many) who are only part of a fandom because it is the 'in' thing at the moment. Once the popularity weakens they move onto the next 'in' thing never giving a second thought, watch, read, etc...to their 'love' of a year ago.

Hey gideon! I apologize. I wasn't trying to be mean or belittle your opinion I was just teasing.:D Your comment about the head of Davy Jones just made me laugh because it sounded exactly like something my dad would say after we watch those kinds of movies together.

Besides, I respect my elders. I believe what Proverbs 16:31 says-"Gray-headedness is a crown of beauty...":monkey3

I LOVE both films!!! I am most excited for POTC3.

If it is anywhere near as good as the first 2, this will be one of the great movie trilogy's.

Cocoboloboy -- no problem at all ... sounds like your father has good taste.
And no grey hairs upon my head.................. yet.....:D
