Finally watched it. I wasn't that impressed or at least underwhelmed compared to people freaking out. For me MMPR was big when I was a kid, so all the campy stuff kind goes hand in hand IMHO. The dark, gritty stuff felt overdone. The sequence with Zach was meh and the whole reveal at the end would have been better if it was who it originally was supposed to be than who it ended up being (although I'm not sure why I'm writing spoiler-free...) Even the costumes seemed worse than the standard Halloween fare except Tommy's holo shield which I liked.

One question and I'll spoiler tag this:

If Kimberly died in Tommy's arms on the battlefield, but there was shown a relationship between Jason and Kimberly where he ended up dying and it was proven that it was Rita in disguise, does that mean that Jason essentially got it on for a bit with Rita?

That was also my impression. What I don't get is that Fake Kimberly was at Trini's funeral, Tommy was looking on from a distance. He was there when Kimberly died, so why didn't he let anyone know she was a fraud? Did this happen before Kimberly died or afterwards? Why was Tommy standing in the distance?

The only video I could find was actually a review one, so I'd didn't hear much of the dialogue. The reviewers mentioned that they had two versions of the scene with Zach on the bed with the women. One had them both naked, the version I saw had them in their underwear. They were played by pornstars apparently. I think they tried a little too hard to be really modern and edgy with some of the scenes.

the director keeps saying how this was a parody of how dark and gritty kid show reboots are becoming but i think thats BS, and it has done much much better before (with a lot more humor)

look at this s---. THIS is a parody.... this is actually showing how ridiculous gritty reboots are becoming with Actual humor

It really did feel like a parody, it was extremely dark and taking itself way too seriously to the point it was straight up satirical, I was laughing and rolling my eyes the entire time, I'm not even kidding.

i dont know, i think the whole "parody" excuse as a cop out not to get in trouble with saban...

but what's being made fun of? they are clearly not making fun of power rangers (not even as fans) and if they are making fun of gritty remakes then the story is too tragic and too dull. (it ends up becoming the exact thing it is making fun of)

how can it be a parody when the short takes itself so seriously? there is not even any black humor in this, is just edgy and gritty without the wit of a parody

like i said before, this is almost the same as the Mortal Kombat shorts that were made in this way. these guy are full of crap

The MK legacy stuff source material is one of the goriest games of all time.

The PR short source material is one of the most whimsical and silly kids shows of all time...

The fact that it takes itself too seriously is satirical, the fact that it is making fun of dark and gritty is satirical, the fact that they took one of the most whimsical and silly kids show and turned it into a Nolanish dirty, dark and gritty is a satirical, it's very clearly a parody, by making the silly colorful Power Rangers into dark PTSD twisted psychos they're making fun of the whole genre, how can anyone miss that is beyond me.

Man, ive been a huge proponent of a more modern take on the original series. Hell, a few years ago I wrote a whole treatment for it that was pretty well received.

But this is obviously a joke. This is just Pacific Rim mashed together with Halo, that just happens to feature characters in Power Rangers looking suits. It takes just the most basic surface elements of the show and splashes them over some cliché utra-gritty crap.

The fact that Dawson was playing Mr Hardball in the first place was damn piss funny. :lol

yep, perfect review

the good thing is that this short will go nowhere and will be forgotten about in a few weeks

Strangely enough what bugged me the most was the guns in the beginning, felt off mainly because they were just guns, no lasers or anything even attempting to go that route and what looked to be a multi-colored Zord in the beginning getting defeated, which was weird since they were all fighting on the ground...

Seemed like they put a lot of effort into something that is just meant to be a parody.
