I'll tell you why, same reason why comics and packs of cards remain at retail. Sure, some pieces will increase in value, but start charging aftermarket prices on all initial releases and you will lose your fan base and subsequently lose business as well. I don't know if anyone ever colected sports cards back in the 1990's, but around 1990 a new pack of cards (LEAF) came out where they were chargin $6-$10 a pack, retail. Everyone jumped on board. This was soon to be the end of sports card collectibility. The common, everyday collector was ran out of the hobby because they couldn't afford it any longer, so demand decreased.
Personally. I don't think it's sideshow's place to increase the price based upon expected after-market speculation of increased value, but they ultimately can charge whatever they want for their product.
I hope this increased price is due to the size of the item and not a sign of things to come. Increase retail on PF's over $300 and I'm not sure how many more I will be picking up.
I concur.
If SS wants to make more money, they should reduce their prices considerably, and make a lot more. They would make more money that way, and more people would be happy. Win-win. Only flippers would be upset about this. $300 is still a lot of money to pay for a plastic statue. Lower the price by half, and a lot more people would buy them, and I think SS would still make more money. Most people think that $200 is too much to pay for a statue, but would be willing to pay $90 if it was really nice. The only reason why they are so high in the first place IMO is because of how high the prices go in the secondary market. Compared to how much most other things cost in the world, the value of the dollar in comic collectibles is horrible. You get like 20% of the value of your money compared to the cost of production. It's almost completely absurd. When I tell people how much some of these things cost, they say, HOW MUCH??? FOR THAT??? No way! Its worth maybe 1/5th that.
