I think it's mixed. I have a few from Sideshow that are powered via an adapter, but I think batteries predominate.

The only problem with batteries that they corrode with time. I rarely even use the light up functions anymore. It's not worth keeping the batteries in and forgetting about them, for fear of damage to the piece.

That's why I prefer mains power and then I can keep them on for long periods. But obviously that makes it a pain to replace broken pieces apparently. Don't see the point of a light up feature if it's only on for a few mins personally
