Just had a second PS3 go YLOD on me, I am sure that damn update had something to do with it.

____ Sony, and ____ the PS3. I am going to sell them off for parts, and get myself a Blu-Ray home cinema system

Amazing.

I just got my PS3 back(again) and, magically, it works this time.

Back on PSN.

Sony, as a company, can blow. But I'm happy to be playing MY PS3 again.

^I'm just curious, are you guys using PS3 slims, by any chance? I've heard that the slim models are really prone to YLOD. I have an old 80 GB version from 2007. So far, it's worked great, but I hope I don't have any problems in the future.

My fat old PS3 60GB gave in just over a month ago. Got a replacement from Sony, that died last night... Have another coming Tuesday, fingers crossed that doesn't crap out within a month.

PS3 Slim 160G. But not the YLOD for me. My Blu-ray player crapped out. From what I've read, the fatties are FAR LESS reliable than the Slims.

60g and 80g are more prone to the YLOD from the articles I've read on Kotaku.

Could be wrong, though.

Funny I heard the opposite...:dunno

:dunno I've heard the slims are more reliable but who really knows. They haven't even been out for 2 years yet so I guess it's really hard to say. Honestly though I've only known 2 people who had their PS3s go out on them, one was a 60GB version that was bough used and one was a slim that my friend kept it in a tight space next to a bunch of other electronics as well as keep it on for days.

From personal experience, my slim has been waaaaaaaaaay more reliable than any of my fats. I was sending my fat back to Sony about every 6 months due to the blu-ray drive dying or the bluetooth module dying. I've had my slim for much longer than I've had any of my fats with no issues whatsoever. (knock on wood)

You'd think that with all the money it costs for both the 360 and the PS3 that they'd be able to put in components that don't crap out.

We never had to send in our SNES or Genesis for repairs...

I say go and buy a PS3/360 and buy whatever store's extended warranty at the same time. That way if it craps out you just take it back to the store and swap it out there instead of sending it back and waiting for Sony/MS to replace it.

Was just playing both my SNES and Genesis this morning. Even snuck in a little N64 action with WCW/NWO Revenge. Savage!!!!
:clap

You said it. Our SNES, Genesis and N64 systems never even used system fans, and they work just as good today, as they did a few decades ago!

I think Sony and Microsoft need to go back to the drawing board, and figure out how to make their systems more reliable.

Machines today are much more complicated with more moving parts than systems like SNES.

Most people don't treat their systems with that in mind and think it'll survive being shoved in a unventilated corner, on carpet, or a shelf full of dust!

True. But for those owners that DO take great care of their systems, and still have them crap out...sucks.

The Wii - for all its faults - is damn reliable. I'd bet that their next system will be reliable, too.

Sony and Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Nintendo.

The only moving parts in consoles today are the ventilation fans and DVD drives. But, those were around since the PS2 days.

As for systems overheating and crapping out... well, that's still a major problem that needs to solved. I'd like to see what nanotechnology brings a few years from now. Perhaps, we'll have much smaller, faster, and efficient processors.

Nintendo consoles are the epitome of quality control. I never heard about manufacturing problems with the Wii, and my old N64 still works as good as new.

Harddrives too.

PS2s were very susceptible to crapping out.

And it's not just moving parts... these things create a lot of heat to output the kind of power we desire. Something we hardly had to deal with with 8-bit graphics.

But yeah, in time, we'll probably see better (and much more expensive) solutions for PC... then slowly onto consoles. We already have things like solid state drives which are not viable options for most people as they're very costly.

:lecture Hell yeah. Nintendo knows how to make some good stuff. I've never had issues with any Nintendo machine.

I had all kinds of problems with my NES. I had to blow on the cartridges (which was actually a system issue, not a cartridge issue) and I had to put the cartridges in and out multiple times sometimes to get them to read. I actually had the same problem with my Super NES later in the years too.

Methinks some people are looking at the old days of Nintendo through rose-colored glasses. :peace
