Only 9.5 movies I can think of is the ShawShank Redemption, City of God, and now Rush. Nothing deserves a 10. As that is a perfect score and perfection simply doesn't exist.

Only God Forgives: 6.5/10

In terms of story and performances, the film was a'aight, but the objective of the film seemed to really be producing a memorable melodramatic, and at times really visceral and brutal style. The same may be said for Drive, though these films had very different ways of doing that. I'm not at all familiar with Thai films, but I wonder if the filmmaker was trying to ape the style of some of those.

Refn is good at getting the audience to turn away from the screen.

Obviously we've got some major grade inflation in this thread, but for me, there are some legit classics that could warrant that score IMO. Not many, but films that exceed just about perfectly at what they set out to do. Citizen Kane, Casablanca, the Maltese Falcon, Dr. Strangelove, and maybe a few more modern ones like Alien, the Big Lebowski, and A History of Violence.

I watched this again last night too. 2nd viewing.
I'd say 8/10 after reading up on the intent of the story.
its def a WTF movie the first time through.

Angelos vendetta:1/10

Im a Stallone fan so that's the reason i watched it,but the worst movie ive seen with him by far.It offered absolutely nothing worth watching, just pure garbage.

I only seen half of those. I feel sometimes people list movies, (some they haven't even seen, but know they are usually of the highly respected variety), for the sake of sounding like elitists. I admit I haven't seen all the greats. Not saying you haven't seen those. I meant it more as a general statement.

Anyway, I definitely need to watch some of those, and for the others, revisit them as it has been a while.

I ignore people who use inflated scores. I am surprised for so many movie snobs here, nobody has shown interest in 12 Years a Slave. I am planning on going this weekend to see it and was hoping someone here would chime in with a review.

It's a tough movie to review, since it doesn't have the typical fluidity in its flow or rich story telling that comes with a strong movie. But it's shot like one and the characters themselves, have so much potential. Love the mother... what a wicked and demented character. Gorgeous visuals. Just a stunning package, albeit it is both forceful and lacking in certain areas.

I wanted so badly to love this, and who knows maybe with another viewing I may gain new appreciation for it, or simply shut it off 20 minutes in. It's definitely no Drive, but it's not your typical Hollywood hype machine crap that has been put out there either.

I can't wait for 12 Years A Slave!

You should see City of God, World's Fastest Indian, and the Whale Rider. Some gems that people may not be aware of. Well, City of God everyone should know about, but you would be surprised by how few know of its existence. Frequency is also a good film, even if it's not a foreign or independent release. It's one of those Hollywood gems that slip through the cracks, like a Sandlot, Indian in the Cupboard, or Radio Flyer. Again, not everyone finds those movies their cup of tea, but I love them.

Cidade de Deus is definitely in my top 20 films of all time. It really is a remarkably powerful film.

I'll give it a shot.

I also like the Suicide Kings, Virgin Suicides (seems to be a theme here), and Green Street Hooligans.

Cidade de Deus = City of God :wink1:

Oh, Eli :slap :lol

I should see Mama then.

btw Laugh as you may, but I love John Carter of Mars. Such a good movie. I never grow tired of it, and I love Lynn Collins. What a gorgeous specimen she is.

I know I love it because every time they show it on television I watch the entire thing through. Not many films have that kind of power over me.
