The Thing: finally watched it with the kids..... obviously after all this time is remains a classic, simply based on their reactions , it still works.
10/10
Rewatchability 10/10

As a side note, watching the blue ray....shows my something I never saw before....

The Doc has a nose ring!!!! WTH? All these years and never noticed it before.

Black Panther: 7/10

It was good, very good, but definitely way overhyped which made it a little bit of a let down for me. Everything I read about it, and the huge box office numbers made me think I was going to be blown away. I would say it's a strong Marvel movie but falls in the middle of the list somewhere. Definitely not nearly as good as the Russo Brothers movies. I liked Killmonger with his personal vendetta and the larger messages about society and politics, but I feel like they didn't quite go far enough with either of those ideas. Overall enjoyable but just not in the "great" category.

The first one looks like a masterpiece compared to this. The plot is basic, stupid and cringy. They really want you to care, they really do but their attemps are not effective at all. Rexy was reduced to a poser and Blue is the main dino by far, I'm fine with that but they're no longer believable as dinosaurs. They're more like giant magical creatures that help people when they are most needed, I wouldn't be surprised if they start talking in the next movie.

I mean, that's the impression I got watching the previous film. Corporate, feel-good, focus group nonsense.

Great to hear that today's kids can watch it and still be suitably freaked out. I think the effects hold up sufficiently well to not elicit laughter instead - as can be the case with our classics. And the atmosphere in the movie is still there.

They already spoke....in that dream sequence in the second one....

I watch "Independence Day" every year on the 4th of July. I forget how long I've been doing it. Like Die Hard at Christmas.

I do it in installments. On July 2nd, I watch the first part, then part two on July 3rd, and the finale on July 4th. Remember the ads when it came out? "July 2, they arrive...July 3, they attack....July 4, we fight back!"

I know it's a "bad" movie. There are incredible leaps of logic and suspension of disbelief required to enjoy the film. But I think it's simply the best "bad" movie of all time. Like truly enjoyable. It has such awesome pacing. I absolutely love how they set it up slowly, introduce the big ensemble of characters, and then it all goes into overdrive when the aliens attack.

Remember that very first teaser from the Super Bowl, showing the White House blow up? I was so insanely hyped for the movie. I saw it opening weekend. I absolutely loved it. Just a fun roller coaster of a movie. I love all the emotional beats; how each of the main characters suffers a loss, but they all win in the end. Whitmore's speech before the attack is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

Cheesy as all hell? Yes, absolutely. But it's so much fun to see it slowly set up, and then spring into action, just like the original Jurassic Park.

Another "bad" movie I love for similar reasons is Troy. Gotta be the director's cut though. All that set up, then pay off.

I don't think the movies being made now have the same sense of world building, or pacing, or characters. They're all just trash now. Dumbed down to the point of retardation. ID4 was "dumb" but it wasn't stupid. It was everything you could want out of a big summer action movie.

Independence Day: 10/10

Looking forward to my rewatch next year.

(There is no sequel in my universe. That rotten abortion of a film doesn't exist to me.)

Movies I've seen since May:

Infinity War 10/10 Loved it. Can't wait for the sequel
Deadpool 2 7.5/10 OG was better but this is a worthy sequel.
Sicario 2 7/10 Not as good as the original yet I did enjoy it. Left some important plot issues unresolved to leave an opening for a sequel.
Incredibles 2 8/10 Great fun at the movies. Liked the original better only because the villain was better in the first one.
Jurassic World 2 6/10 Great visuals but not much story wise. Typical summer popcorn movie that kids would probably like (at least my kids did).

Rebels season 2 Finale.

All SW fans really need to watch this show.....

Fantastic season...each episode is better than the last.
