Tried to watch "Equalizer 3." I quite liked the first two.

This one is garbage. Just dull as dishwater. Turned it off, couldn't be bothered to sit through it.

The Deer Hunter: 8.5/10

Never saw this one until yesterday. Lives up to the hype. One of Deniro's better performances in my opinion, up with the work he did with Scorsese. And great work by Cazale, as always. Guy only starred in 5 movies and all were nominated for best picture. He's not the only reason why but he is a reason why.

The Arrival: 8/10

Haven't seen this for a few years but wanted to revisit after seeing close encounters and prisoners recently. Villeneuve is on another level among modern directors and this is an illustration of why. This movie works really well on both an intellectual and emotional level.

GhostBusters 2016: 6.5/10

This is not that bad of a film, funny in parts and some cool ghost effects.

Fragile male ego's and wanton desires definitely attacked this thing and made out to be way worse than it is. Its a girl power film to be sure, but so what?

The Killers (1964 version): 7.5/10

Nifty story that was well told. Supposedly this was made for television, and was only released theatrically when the network felt it was too violent for TV, which is surprising given the level of talent involved. Lee Marvin and John Cassavetes are two of my favorite actors from this period, and both put on masterful performances. Ronald Reagan couldn't hang with the quality of actors around him, so probably for the best that he pivoted to politics. The opening scene made me wonder if it didn't inspire one of my favorite Monty Python skits.

I'm also glad they didn't try to get overly sentimental by changing the ending somehow, which is what you might expect from a Hollywood movie. But if you are advertising the fact that this is based on a Hemingway story, then you should know not to expect anything too rosy.

Platoon 8.5/10
Happy to say that after the longest time this film holds up really well. A few niggles, they sure do over use that same piece of music over and over, Sheen's narration seems unnecessary, he states the real obvious most of the time haha and maybe there are a few too many characters? Dafoe and Berenger are the clear standouts, they are amazing, but I really loved Keith David as well and McGinley is as weasly as ever. A classic. The UHD is very good, a lot of expected softness and grain for a low budget eighties film but some shots are startingly sharp. There is one shot of the plane coming in to do the bombing run towards the end that is unbelievably cheap looking.

Star Trek: First Contact 7.5/10
I was never a huge fan of this one but it is undeniably one of the better ST films. A good script, solid direction from Frakes and most of the core cast all get something to do (mostly lol). James Cromwell is a lot of fun. Alfre Woodard is ok but I think the script lets her character down at times and her relationship with Picard is awkward to say the least. Some of the effects shots are amazing and some are very ambitious that don't quite hold up - like the famous Borg Queen attaching to the body shot. Still, it made make pause and think how the heck did they do that.

Petite Maman 9/10
One of the best new films i have seen in years. Incredible piece of art. The less said about it the better.

Casino 7.5/10
I really really like this film but could never really get over Scorsese essentially remaking Goodfellas. The are so many obvious similarities from the DeNiro/Pesci double act, Stone is the new Bracco, the trajectory of the plot is almost identical. And this has to be Scorsese choosing music at his most laziest. So so obvious with the Stones. Goodfellas music is so much more inspired. Thank god the film is such high quality. All of the lead actors are just fantastic. Stone is really amazing. I just wish actors like James Woods, Don Rickles and Frank Vincent had more to do, they are all really good. One of the better looking catalog 4K I have seen recently.

Star Trek: First Contact 7.5/10

I remember being surprised when the Red Letter Media folks tore First Contact to pieces, as it was always my favorite Next Gen film, and in the top handful of my favorite Star Trek movies in general (below 2, 4, and 6). They did point out some notable flaws, but I felt it worked on an emotional level, and had good suspense and action.

Casino will always have a special place in my heart because the great Joe Bob Briggs gets a cameo!

Jez no idea that was JBB!

Spanish movie "Venus" (2022). Lovecraft inspired cosmic horror with lots of personality. Well worth a watch

A Face In the Crowd: 8/10

Great film and Andy Griffith put on an amazing performance. All of Kazan's movies are a bit tainted by his cooperation with HUAC, but hard to deny his brilliance as a filmmaker.

I have decided to test the water so to speak....update as to the experience without film spoilers to follow this time next week.
Well my friends I have today seen Killers of The Flower Moon without an Intermission. Mr Scorsese has delivered a story that needed to be told. Excellent performances from Deniro, DiCaprio and cast. I recommend this film to you all.

At Close Range 7.5/10
Another older film that still has a lot of power behind it. Sean Penn and Christopher Walken are fantastic. Walken especially is just so amazingly seductive and charming. He plays it a little bit like a vampire basically. And i had forgotten what a stacked supporting cast this has - Chris Penn, Stephen Geoffreys (Evil Ed from Fright Night), Mary Stuart Masterson (sigh, who is so lovely. Makes me want to watch Some Kind Of Wonderful again), Candy Clark, Kiefer Sutherland, David Strathairn (who barely says a word but has a great intense presence), Tracey Walter and Crispin Glover!

This Is Spinal Tap 11/10
Still a masterpiece.

I liked the fight scenes in the 2016 version. IMHO, if it was a straight action film, it would have gotten better ratings, less backlash and made more money.

A common criticism is that this was just a sci-fi - ish spin on Bridesmaids and SNL. This cast could have worked if they just pulled all the "comedy" right out of it. Performers who can do comedy can generally do anything else because comedy is pretty difficult in general on screen. The larger consideration might be that only McCarthy has proven, out of that main cast, that she has the ability to elevate the material she's given ( and here she wasn't give much at all)

If you are going to get and keep a cast with certain limitations and the writing isn't elite, then all you have left is spectacle to "anchor" the story. Even Bridesmaids had an element to it that was very dark in tone to ground it. My take on it.

The Killers (1946): 7.5/10

A great noir film. Technically better made than the remake from the early '60s, with great performances by Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner. The story was also very different (the main character is a boxer rather than a race car driver), and was driven by flashbacks from an insurance investigator's interviews rather than the assassins trying to recoup the money. The ending was also very different, so these movies are pretty dissimilar. I like the version with Lee Marvin more, but only slightly so, and for different reasons. Worth checking out. I kept thinking of A History of Violence in the opening scene in a diner, and bet it was an influence on Cronenberg.

Interesting my friend.
