Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 8/10

Figured it was time for a rewatch of the trilogy since I've only seen them the one time in the theaters, and this first movie is far better than I remembered. The CGI is a bit dated now of course, but Serkis's performance is absolutely mesmerizing and he really makes you feel every second of Caesar's journey.

Decided to give all the Daniel Craig Bonds another go.

Casino Royale - 10/10 - My fav Bond film period. Great action, great Bond villain, great Bond Girl, great Bond theme song, and great action. No complaints

Quantum of Solace - 1/10 - everything I said about Casino Royale, this one is the exact opposite. Just awful. I do like the opera scene but that’s it.

Skyfall - 9/10 - one of Bond’s best. Really great villain. A bit too long. I often wonder if this is that great or just feels that way because it follow it up after QoS

Spectre - 8/10 - the most classic feeling Bond film IMO. Making Blofeld Bonds step brother is stupid and ruins the a bit but the love story, fun action, and David Bautista make up for it.

No Time to Die - 8/10 - So I hated this movie the first time I saw it. The fact that Bond dies was the main reason. Bond don’t die! But the other was due to the long break between film I had lost my connection to the love story. So it just felt unnatural in this on. But watching them back to back the love story in this one works much better. Bond dying is still a major sin and I take a point off for that. But watching the DC films as its own self contained Bond saga I can let it past.

Glad I gave these a rewatch. I had a blast.

When Evil Lurks.
Easily the best horror movie of 2023, don't eat while watching this movie, I can stomach anything but three key scenes were visceral and brutal. It doesn't hold back at all. It's an Argentinian movie so don't let that hold you back from watching this movie.

10/10
I missed something with this film.

I love horror
I love foreign horror
I love the feeling of dread in my horror films

This movie did nothing for me. Other than the axe scene, I was unimpressed. Nothing got under my skin, nothing had me excited, and I found very little new or interesting.

What was it that you loved about this ? What were the three scenes you could not stomach. I don’t recall anything being that bad.

I actually found myself liking Quantum a bit more in a rewatch a few years ago, but would still only rate it about a 4/10. Agree about Casino being the absolute best Bond film, with Skyfall a close second.

I had a moment in life when I didn’t hate QoS but watching it so close to CR was just jarring. It’s the most action packed Bond film but the problem is the directing and editing of the action is the worst of any Bond film :(

The Equalizer 3
6.5/10
Solid but not as good as the first two. Strange structure that didn’t seem to work. The bad guys weren’t as memorable as the other two and the climax battle felt a bit lacking. And then it did a Return Of The King style 20 endings. But the Italian locations are beautiful and it’s shot like a coffee commercial.

A Star Is Born
Maestro

8.5/10
Wow this Bradley Cooper dude has a bit of talent. Both excellent, very different styles to suit the material, really great performances all round.

Ferrari
7.5/10
Fantastic, a return to form for Mann. A hugely engrossing talk fest. Be warned though there is one really distressing scene in it.

Wonka
8.5/10
I’ve seen this twice now and it’s even better the second time. Just a joyful experience. I thought my son would like it and he adored it. The performances, the jokes, the style. It matches the original in terms of quality but never tries to replicate it or pander to it.

The Lobster
7/10
One of the maddest films I have seen that makes complete sense. Colin Farrell is incredible.

The Covenant
7/10
Another really solid Guy Ritchie flick. He drops a lot of his usual ticks and just tells a really compelling story about a sergeant and his interpreter trying to survive after an ambush in Afghanistan. Two great lead performances.

The feeling that evil can’t be killed the evil in this movie.

We got movies like the nun 2 were demons can be selective on who they kill and stall for time before they get defeated. Then other movies are like oh damn you can win if we all stay up until dawn. Evil dead rise is similar to this, however they affect entire towns on this one, there’s a lot of stuff that was missed from subtitles but they cover more plots in Spanish. I place this Movie above all the other horror movies I watched last year. That feeling of watching them create bigger mistakes, that towards the end the demon is like, I spare you because you are that Stupid and get a pass was great. It’s a film that doesn’t explain where it comes from, God’s dead, evil’s won, everyone know‘s about it because the elders dealt with it in the past and panic when it reaches their side of the world. Movies don’t need to be over gory or visceral for it to be good, but when I watched it, I could totally see something like this happening, which made it more terrifying.

Usually kids are off limits, but they get possessed faster because evil loves them and they love evil.

I guess I just feel it’s all been done before.

I’m 52 and a Horror vet.

Demons that win in the end have always been around

The Beyond, Demons, Rec, etc.. Of course horror movies in general always have evil being triumphant in the end. So I guess it just did not grab me like so many others.

But it’s cool that you love it. Many others do also.

Maybe a 2nd viewing will help me appreciate it.

I agree wholeheartedly, some movies just aren’t for everybody, I’m just trying to catch up to you 🤣🤣 I’m 40 years old but the second viewing made it more enjoyable and made me catch a few things I missed the first run.

Not going to lie though, I have an affinity for the trash movie genre and their Hollywood horror rip offs and seeing something refreshing like talk to me, attachment, the influencer, alond, sanctuary, the passenger, last year it was a good year for horror

Speaking of trash, I saw Aquaman 2 and it was NOT that bad.

What is killing a lot of modern movies is insane casting choices, CGI!!!

Do we really need to see Mera and old Nicole Kidman being CGI-ed, looks terrrible, under water????

Outside of really Amber Hear, who is a terrible actress, there was a good buddy/cop movie there with Patrick Wilson and Jason Moma doing a good job.

The one liners from Moma was terrible, but there was good buddy buddy moments with Wilson

If not for the environmental nonsesne and poor CGI and Amber heard...this movie would have been good.

The CGI needs to GOOOOOOOO from all movies. The ridiculousness of Atlantis Underwater and the characters looking ridiculous because it's under water has to go.

This movie like most modern ones suffers from CGi, and not enough buddy buddy moments.

You must build up not just action but why characters like one another and why the audience likes the characters.

Any way Aquaman 2 is a solid 6 out of 10 and had potential for more.

Yeah I watched The Fugitive in 4K last night and while there are a few dodgy effects shots, it was wonderful seeing a ton of real locations, at one point Tommy Lee Jones and Joey Pants are walking down a large pipe at the side of the dam that didn’t look particularly safe, the great helicopter shots and the mostly practical nature of the train crash.

Once upon a time in Hollywood: 9/10

I think this is my 4th watch now. I just can't pass on watching this when it gets recommended on a streaming service. Love it.

Justice league Doom: 9/10

Probably the best animated DC movie in my opinion and handles these characters and the story just right. If this were live action it would be the greatest super hero film ever.

I saw Wonka with my daughter at the theaters and thought it was serviceable, but not something I would watch again. Chalamet is quite the talent, though. Really looking forward to seeing Farrari.

Poor Things...10/10. Any more said would spoil the entertainment. See it, you know you want to, submit to curiosity.

Oceans Eight 6/10
Not as bad as I had heard but def not as good as the bloke films

Star Trek: Nemesis 7/10
Better than I remembered. I never really warmed to the NG cast but I would put this second after First Contact. Really fascinating seeing Tom Hardy so young. Even then he had his particular style of acting down pat.

Rewatched all of the Hannibal Lecter.
Manhunter still an incredible experience. 8.5/10. Very very eighties but that doesn’t bother me. Watched the longer version which I prefer but unfortunately the extra footage is poor quality. Silence of the Lambs has strangely dated a bit. 8/10. I always preferred Cox as Lecter. So cold and Machiavellian without over doing it like Hopkins. And the whole woman working in a man’s world is so unsubtle. Still it’s better than Hannibal 5/10 and Red Dragon 2/10. Hannibal at least has some Ridley Scott style and some outrageous moments. But again, Hopkins over does it, Julianne Moore looks like she doesn’t want to be there and the editing is choppy. Still it’s better than, ha ha, Red Dragon. Awful. I can’t believe so many great actors signed up for this.

Haunting In Venice 6/10
This was ok. Beautiful photography but it’s the least of the three Branagh has done. I just didn’t care for any of the characters. I think Death on the Nile is my fav, really like the cast in that one.

I definitely want to check the movie out after all I've heard, but wasn't sure if it was something that needed to be seen on the big screen?
I suppose big screen gives it some edge. I think the mindset should be prepared for anything with a wide open mind. Great performances in particular lines from Mark Ruffalo.....Enjoy

The Holdovers: 8/10

Wonderful movie. Very well made, great performances, a nice examination of the human condition. The vibe from being a low key period piece also works really well.
Really want to see this. And American Fiction.

I watched the original 78 Battlestar Galactica movie/pilot in 4K last night. Yes you can say the writing is a bit cliched and unoriginal, yes you can say the acting at best is soap opera, yes you can say it steals from Star Wars, but, but, the 4K transfer is absolutely staggering, especially the on set photography. The clarity of the closeups on Maren Jensen (swoon) and the intense reds when they go to battle mode, incredible. The Cylon cockpit shots are awash with blue and silver. The effects shots suffer though, they range from awful to decent but doesn’t look like they have done any Star Wars CG fixing. But I don’t care brought back some lovely nostalgic Sunday memories from 78.
